Entry-Level Sales Jobs in Australia: How to Get Hired in 2026
You want a sales job in Australia and your resume has no sales job on it. That is the normal starting point, and it is fixable, but you need to know what the market actually looks like before you start applying.
What the data says about breaking in#
On 14 October 2026, the JobRise live jobs feed (jobrise.io) showed 130 open sales listings in Australia on the sales jobs hub. Of those, 110 were posted in the last 30 days and 66 in the last 7 days. That is a live count of open listings, not a market survey.
The uncomfortable part: 0 of those 130 listings carried an intern, graduate, junior, or trainee title. Employers here post "Account Executive" or "Field Sales Consultant" and expect you to come in through the side door. Do not wait for a listing that says "entry-level" in the title. Almost none will.

Titles that can hide a junior entry point#
Look at the roles that actually appeared in this snapshot. "Sales Administration and Support Advisor" at Online Education Services and "Sales Coordinator" at Crown Equipment are back-office or support titles where a strong organiser with no sales history can get a look. "Expression of Interest - Account Manager" at We Are Social is literally a talent-pool listing, which is the easiest door in the whole slice.
"Field Sales Consultant" at Red Energy and "AI Senior Sales Development Representative (SDR)" at ShiftCare are outbound roles. SDR work in particular is the classic entry route into tech sales, even when the word "senior" is in the title. Read the requirements, not the title.
Skip "APAC GTM Enablement Lead" at Anthropic, "Senior Business Development Manager - Outbound (AU)" at ShiftCare, and "Account Executive, Enterprise - Financial Services" at Braze. Those need a track record.
Where the openings are#
Sydney dominates this slice with 60 listings, then Melbourne (21), Perth (5), Brisbane (3), and Macquarie Park (2). If you are in Brisbane, expect to apply mostly for remote or hybrid roles, or plan a move.
Job type is nearly all full-time: 125 of 130, with 3 part-time and 2 contract. Part-time sales roles are rare here, which matters if you are studying.
Companies with the most open listings in this snapshot were Okta (11), Rentokil Initial (8), Stripe (7), Datadog (6), Anthropic (5), Red Bull (5), Intercom (5), Lyka (4), Stranger Soccer (4), and efm (4). Some of those names are recruiters or staffing firms rather than the final employer, so read each listing carefully.
One more honest note: no listing in this slice shows a salary. When you do see a range quoted elsewhere, treat it as indicative and verify current pay on the official Fair Work or employer source before you negotiate.
Skills employers here actually want#
Sales hiring managers in Australia care about three things when you have no track record: can you start a conversation with a stranger, can you keep organised follow-up, and can you handle rejection without sulking. Everything else is trainable.
Proof beats claims. You cannot write "excellent communication skills" and expect anyone to believe it. You can write about a real thing you did.
Certifications help at the margin. Free or low-cost ones from HubSpot Academy, Salesforce Trailhead, or Gong are recognised by local hiring managers and take days, not months. Put them under a "Certifications" heading with the date you finished.
A small portfolio works too. Write three cold email drafts for a product you actually use, a one-page outbound call script, and a short plan for how you would break into a target list of 20 accounts. Save it as a PDF and link it from your resume.
The zero-experience resume bullet#
Here is a rewritten bullet that turns ordinary retail work into sales evidence.
Before: "Served customers and handled transactions at a busy register."
After: "Handled 60+ customer conversations per shift at a busy register, proactively suggested add-on items to roughly one in three customers, and was asked to train two new starters on the POS system within my first six months."
Same job. Now it shows volume, initiative, and trust. Do the same for any bar work, tutoring, volunteering, or uni group project.
If your resume is thin, a resume builder will keep the formatting clean while you focus on the wording. JobRise has a free one at /en/tools/resume-builder/.
A 7-step plan#
- Pick one sales lane: SDR/BDR, field sales, account management, or sales support. Do not spray all four.
- Build the mini portfolio: three cold emails, one call script, one 20-account target plan. Two evenings of work.
- Finish one free certification this week. HubSpot Inbound or Salesforce Trailhead basics are enough to start.
- Rewrite three bullets from past jobs using the "volume + initiative + outcome" pattern shown above.
- Make a list of 30 target employers in your city, including the ones with multiple listings in this snapshot, and find one real person to contact at each.
- Apply to 5 roles per weekday, tailoring the first line of your cover letter to each. Track everything in a spreadsheet.
- Follow up once after 5 business days, then move on. Silence is normal.
Where to look#
Start on the JobRise sales jobs hub at /en/jobs/in/australia/sales/ and check it weekly, since 66 of the 130 listings in this snapshot were less than a week old. Also watch the JobRise Hiring Report for Australia at /en/reports/hiring/australia/, which showed 462 open listings across all categories and 346 posted in the last 30 days at the time of this snapshot. That wider view matters because sales-adjacent roles like "Customer Success" or "Sales Support" often sit outside the sales filter.
Recruiters matter in this market. Several of the names in the top-company list are staffing firms, so a good relationship with one of them can put you forward for roles that never get publicly listed.
FAQ#
Do I need a degree to get an entry-level sales job in Australia?
Usually no. For SDR, field sales, and sales support roles, employers care more about evidence you can talk to people and stay organised. A degree helps for graduate programs at large corporates, but those programs are a separate hiring track.
How long does it typically take?
Plan for 6 to 12 weeks of consistent effort if you are applying to 5 roles a day and following up. It can be faster in Sydney where 60 of the 130 listings in this snapshot sat, and slower in cities with only a handful of openings.
Should I apply for roles with "senior" in the title?
Apply anyway if the requirements look within reach, but do not burn most of your time there. Focus on titles like Sales Coordinator, Sales Administration and Support Advisor, SDR, and Field Sales Consultant, which are more realistic entry points.
What if I have literally no work experience?
Use volunteering, uni group projects, sports club fundraising, or casual bar work. Anything where you approached people, asked for something, or organised a group can be written as sales-relevant evidence.
Are part-time sales roles common?
No. In this snapshot, 3 of 130 listings were part-time. If you need part-time hours, look for sales support or admin-adjacent roles, or negotiate hours after an offer rather than filtering them out at the search stage.
