Naya offer haath mein. Joining 30 din mein chahiye. Current company mein 90 din notice. Kya kare?

Buyout. Yeh standard practice hai but complicated hai. Sahi tarike se kaise karna hai.

Buyout matlab kya#

Notice period buyout = Tum apne remaining notice period ka salary equivalent pay karte ho company ko aur jaldi exit karte ho.

Example:

  • Notice period: 90 days
  • Tumne 30 days serve kiye
  • Remaining: 60 days
  • Buyout: 60 days ki gross salary

Tum pay karte ho company ko, ya company tumhare F&F mein deduct karti hai.

Calculation#

Basic formula (most common): Buyout = Remaining days x (Gross monthly salary / 30)

Example:

  • Monthly gross: ₹1,00,000
  • Daily rate: ₹3,333
  • Remaining days: 60
  • Buyout: ₹2,00,000

Some companies: Charge basic+DA only (less than gross). Cheaper for employee.

Senior roles: Sometimes 1.5x or 2x of normal buyout. Negotiable.

Buyout policy by company#

TCS, Infosys, Wipro:

  • Generally don't allow buyout
  • Strict 90-day serve policy
  • Exception possible for unique cases
  • Manager + HR + BU head approval needed

Cognizant, Capgemini:

  • Buyout allowed conditionally
  • Manager approval needed
  • Some restrictions during critical project phases

Mid-size IT (Mphasis, LTIMindtree):

  • More flexible
  • Standard buyout policy
  • Approval easier

Product companies (Razorpay, Cred, Flipkart):

  • Most flexible
  • Standard buyout formula
  • 30-day notice common, buyout for senior roles

Startups:

  • Often case-by-case
  • Founders/leadership decide
  • Cultural fit consideration

MNCs (Microsoft, Google GCC):

  • Standard buyout option
  • HR-managed process
  • Usually 1-month buyout max

Process step by step#

Step 1: Manager se baat karo

Resign letter submit karne ke baad ya pehle:

"Hi [Manager], I've received an offer where the new employer needs me to join in 30 days. I'd like to explore the option of notice period buyout. Can we discuss the process?"

Don't:

  • Manager se cheekh ke nahi bolo
  • Emotional blackmail mat karo
  • "Mujhe kaam pe gussa hai" attitude

Do:

  • Polite + professional
  • Specific dates
  • Knowledge transfer plan ready

Step 2: HR ke saath formal request

Email karo HR (manager ko CC):

Subject: Notice Period Buyout Request - [Employee ID]

Hi [HR],

I've resigned on [date] with 90-day notice ending [date]. I've received an offer requiring joining by [earlier date].

I'd like to opt for notice period buyout for [X] days.

Kindly share:
- Buyout policy and formula
- Required approvals
- Timeline for processing
- Impact on relieving letter and F&F

I've discussed this with my manager [Name] who is supportive subject to KT plan.

Regards,
[Name]

Step 3: Approval chain

Typically:

  • Manager → BU/Vertical head → HR business partner → HR head
  • Approval timeline: 7-14 days

Senior leadership ke liye sometimes 1-2 weeks.

Step 4: KT plan + handover

Manager ko detailed KT plan do:

  • Pending tasks list
  • Documentation status
  • Replacement training (if available)
  • Client/stakeholder transition

Senior employees more KT zaroori. Junior employees less.

Step 5: Buyout amount payment

Options:

  1. Deduction from F&F:
  • F&F mein leave encashment + bonus credit hota hai
  • Buyout amount deduct ho jata hai
  • Net amount tumhe milta hai
  1. Direct payment to company:
  • Cheque ya transfer
  • F&F separately fully credit
  • Less common, more paperwork

Tax angle: Buyout amount tumhare salary se deduct hota hai usually. No tax impact separately.

New employer reimbursement#

Yeh game-changer hai. Most senior roles (4+ years experience) ka buyout naya employer reimburse karta hai.

Companies that typically reimburse:

  • Product companies for senior hires
  • MNCs / GCC roles
  • High-demand technical roles (GenAI, cloud)
  • Leadership positions

Companies that usually don't:

  • IT services (TCS, Infosys)
  • Volume hiring roles (fresher batches)
  • Junior positions
  • Companies with high candidate availability

Negotiating reimbursement#

During offer discussion:

"My current notice period is 90 days. To join in 30 days, I'd need a notice buyout of approximately ₹X. Is this something the company would consider reimbursing?"

Best timing:

  • Before signing offer letter
  • Part of total package negotiation
  • Have actual buyout amount calculated

Possible outcomes:

  1. Full reimbursement: Best case. Common for senior roles.
  2. Partial reimbursement (50-70%): Common.
  3. Buyout reimbursement in 6-12 months: Conditional on tenure.
  4. No reimbursement, but joining bonus: Net effect similar.
  5. No reimbursement, no bonus: You absorb cost.

If you absorb cost, negotiate:

  • Higher base salary
  • Higher joining bonus
  • More flexible work arrangement

Documentation#

Get in writing:

  1. Reimbursement amount: ₹X
  2. Reimbursement timing: With first salary, joining bonus, or after probation
  3. Tax angle: Gross-up or net amount
  4. Tenure conditions: Repayment if you leave before X months
  5. Documentation needed: Buyout receipt from previous employer

Email confirmation se HR. Offer letter mein clause add karwao.

Common pitfalls#

Pitfall 1: Current company se OK liye bina new offer accept

Action: Pehle current company se buyout possibility confirm karo (informal). Then accept new offer.

Pitfall 2: Buyout amount unclear

Action: HR se exact calculation written mein. Formula + days + amount + payment mode.

Pitfall 3: Relieving letter delay

Action: Buyout pay karte time confirm karo relieving letter same day issue hogi. Otherwise BGV mein problem.

Pitfall 4: New employer "verbal commitment" reimburse karne ka

Action: Verbal nahi chalega. Offer letter mein clause. Email pe HR confirmation. Otherwise denied later.

Pitfall 5: Bonus/PF impact

Action: Buyout F&F mein deduct hone se annual bonus pro-rata, leave encashment impact ho sakta hai. Calculate net amount.

Alternatives to buyout#

Buyout always best option nahi hai. Other options:

1. Notice period negotiation:

"Manager, can I serve 60 days instead of 90? I've completed all major deliverables."

Sometimes managers agree for cooperative employees. Worth asking.

2. Extended notice:

Naya employer 60 days notice accept kar le. Tum 60 din serve karo, no buyout. Save ₹2-3 lakh.

3. Leave usage:

Pending leaves serve karo end mein. Effective notice kam ho jata hai. (Most companies allow 50% leaves in notice)

4. Sabbatical exit:

Some companies allow "exit + 1 year return option" without buyout. Rare but exists.

Buyout math worth it?#

Scenario A: Buyout pay karna khud:

  • Buyout cost: ₹2 lakh
  • 60 din earlier joining
  • New salary - old salary: ₹5 LPA increase
  • Monthly diff: ₹41,667
  • Break-even: 5 months

If you'll stay 1+ year, buyout worth it.

Scenario B: New employer reimburses:

  • No cost to you
  • Always go for buyout

Scenario C: Salary diff small (under ₹1 LPA):

  • Buyout ₹2 lakh, monthly diff ₹8,000
  • Break-even: 25 months
  • Not worth it. Serve full notice.

Yaad rakh#

Buyout standard practice hai senior IT roles ke liye.

  • Manager + HR ke saath process clear karo
  • New employer se reimbursement negotiate karo
  • Written documentation important
  • Tax implications samjho
  • Alternatives consider karo before paying

Smart financial decision lo. Sirf joining urgency ke karan ₹2 lakh khich mat do without negotiation.
