Fresher Ko Salary Kitna Maangna Chahiye?
Interview chal raha hai. Sab theek ja raha hai. Technical round clear. HR round mein baithe ho. Phir HR puchta hai: "So, what are your salary expectations?"
Dimaag blank. Paseene aa gaye.
Zyada bol diya toh offer nahi milega. Kam bol diya toh zindagi bhar regret hoga. Aur sabse bura? Tumhe pata hi nahi ki kitna maangna "sahi" hai.
Yeh problem har fresher face karta hai. Koi college mein salary negotiation nahi sikhata. Placement cell bolti hai "jo mil raha hai le lo." Parents bolte hain "pehli naukri hai, paisa mat dekho."
Lekin sach yeh hai: agar tum galat number bol dete ho interview mein, toh company wahi lock kar leti hai. Baad mein negotiate karna 10 guna mushkil ho jata hai.
Is guide mein exactly bataunga ki fresher ko salary kitna maangna chahiye, degree wise, city wise, aur company type wise. Plus, kya bolna hai jab HR salary puchhe.
Pehle Yeh Samjho: CTC, In-Hand, aur Take-Home Mein Farak#
Bahut saare freshers ko yeh basic cheez nahi pata. Company bolti hai "5 LPA CTC" aur tumhe lagta hai 5 lakh bank mein aayega. Wrong.
CTC (Cost to Company)
Company tumpe jo total kharcha karti hai. Isme included hai:
- Basic salary
- HRA (House Rent Allowance)
- PF (Provident Fund, tumhara aur company ka dono)
- Insurance (health, life)
- Gratuity
- Bonuses (variable pay, joining bonus, etc.)
In-Hand / Take-Home
Jo actually tumhare bank account mein aata hai har mahine.
Formula (Approximate):
In-Hand = CTC x 0.65 to 0.75 (roughly)
Matlab:
- 3.5 LPA CTC = roughly ₹21,000-22,000/month in-hand
- 5 LPA CTC = roughly ₹30,000-32,000/month in-hand
- 8 LPA CTC = roughly ₹48,000-52,000/month in-hand
- 12 LPA CTC = roughly ₹70,000-78,000/month in-hand
Important: Variable pay (performance bonus) ko in-hand mat maano. Woh guaranteed nahi hota. "6 LPA CTC with 1.5 LPA variable" matlab actually 4.5 LPA fixed hai.

City Wise Salary Difference#
Same role, same company, lekin city change karo toh salary bhi change hoti hai. Cost of living factor karta hai.
Tier-1 Cities (Highest Pay)
- Bangalore: Tech capital of India. Highest salaries for tech roles. But rent bhi ₹15,000-25,000/month for a decent room
- Mumbai: Finance hub. Highest for finance/consulting. Rent ₹18,000-30,000
- Delhi NCR (Gurgaon, Noida): Good mix of IT + startups. Rent ₹10,000-20,000
- Hyderabad: Growing tech hub. Salaries close to Bangalore, rent 20-30% cheaper
- Pune: Strong IT presence. Salaries slightly below Bangalore. Rent affordable
Tier-2 Cities
- Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Jaipur: 10-20% lower salaries than Tier-1
- Coimbatore, Indore, Chandigarh, Kochi: 15-25% lower
Rule of thumb: Tier-2 mein salary kam hogi lekin expenses bhi kam honge. ₹4 LPA in Jaipur can give you the same lifestyle as ₹6 LPA in Bangalore.
Interview Mein Salary Ka Sawaal Aaye Toh Kya Bole?#
Yeh sabse important section hai. Kyunki timing aur wording dono matter karte hain.
Scenario 1: "What Are Your Salary Expectations?" (Early Stage)
Agar yeh sawaal first round ya screening mein aaya, toh deflect karo.
Kya bole:
"I'm flexible on compensation and more focused on finding the right role and team. I'm confident we can work something out once we both feel it's a good fit. Could you share the range you have budgeted for this role?"
Yeh kyu kaam karta hai: Tum number nahi de rahe, aur company se range nikalne ki koshish kar rahe ho. Jo pehle number bole, woh negotiate mein weak position mein hota hai.
Scenario 2: "We Need a Number" (HR Insists)
Agar HR forcefully puchhe aur deflect na ho, toh range do, exact number nahi.
Kya bole:
"Based on my skills, the market rate, and the research I've done, I'm looking at a range of ₹X to ₹Y LPA. But I'm open to discussing this based on the total compensation package and growth opportunities."
X aur Y kaise decide karein:
- X = Market average for your role + experience
- Y = X + 20-30%
Example: Agar tum B.Tech CSE fresher ho aur IT services company hai, toh market average roughly 4 LPA hai.
- Bolo: "I'm looking at 4 to 5.5 LPA range depending on the role and other benefits."
Scenario 3: Offer Letter Aa Gaya, Ab Negotiate Karna Hai
Yeh best time hai negotiate karne ka. Company ne decide kar liya hai ki tumhe chahiye. Ab power tumhare haath mein hai.
Kya bole:
"Thank you for the offer. I'm really excited about this opportunity. I was hoping we could discuss the compensation. Based on my research and the skills I bring, I was expecting something closer to ₹Y LPA. Is there flexibility here?"
Key rules:
- Thank always karo pehle. Positive raho
- Specific number do (not range). "₹5.5 LPA" not "5-6 LPA"
- Reason do ki kyu zyada deserve karte ho (skills, projects, certifications)
- Humble raho, demanding nahi
Company Type Ke Hisaab Se Strategy#
Mass Recruiters (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL)
Reality check: In companies mein fresher salary mostly fixed hoti hai. TCS Ninja = 3.36 LPA, TCS Digital = 7 LPA. Infosys PP = 3.6 LPA, DSE = 6.25 LPA. Negotiate karne ka scope almost zero hai mass hiring mein.
Strategy: Negotiate mat karo salary pe. Instead, higher track ke liye try karo. TCS Digital > TCS Ninja. Infosys DSE > Infosys PP. Same company, double salary.
Mid-Tier IT (Capgemini, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra)
Thoda flexibility hota hai, especially off-campus hiring mein. 10-15% negotiate ho sakta hai.
Strategy: Multiple offers rakhho. "I have an offer from Company X at ₹Y. Can you match or do better?"
Startups
Startups mein sabse zyada flexibility hoti hai. Koi fixed band nahi hai. Founders decide karte hain.
Strategy: Apni value clearly batao. Kya projects kiye, kya skills hain, kya impact de sakte ho. Startups results dekhte hain, degree nahi.
Warning: Bahut chhoti startups (5-10 people) mein sometimes ESOPs (stock options) offer karte hain salary ke badle. ESOPs risky hain freshers ke liye. Pehle cash salary secure karo.
Product Companies (Flipkart, Razorpay, Paytm, CRED)
In companies mein structured bands hote hain, lekin negotiate ho sakta hai within that band. 15-25% room hota hai.
Strategy: DSA strong karo. Product companies coding rounds se hire karte hain. Agar interview accha gaya, toh salary bhi achhi milegi.
Fresher Salary Negotiation Ke 7 Rules#
Rule 1: Pehle Number Mat Bolo
Jo pehle number bolega, woh lose karega. Hamesha company se range puchho.
Rule 2: Research Karo (Mandatory)
AmbitionBox, Glassdoor India, aur Levels.fyi pe jaake actual salary data dekho. "Mere dost ko itna mila" wala research kaam nahi karta.
Rule 3: Multiple Offers Rakhho
Yeh sabse powerful negotiation tool hai. "I have an offer from X at Y" bolne pe company ko serious lena padta hai. Agar ek hi offer hai, toh bargaining power kam hai.
Rule 4: Variable Pay Ko Fixed Mat Maano
"8 LPA CTC, 2 LPA variable." Matlab fixed sirf 6 LPA hai. Variable milega ya nahi, yeh company ki performance pe depend karta hai. Negotiate karo ki variable kam ho aur fixed zyada ho.
Rule 5: Benefits Bhi Negotiate Hote Hain
Agar salary mein flexibility nahi hai, toh yeh negotiate karo:
- Joining bonus (one-time, ₹50K-1L)
- Relocation allowance
- WFH flexibility
- Learning budget (courses, certifications)
- Early performance review (6 months instead of 12)
Rule 6: Email Mein Negotiate Karo, Call Se Better
Written communication mein tum clearly soch ke likh sakte ho. Call pe pressure mein galat bol dete ho. HR ko email bhejo politely.
Rule 7: Offer Accept Karne Mein Jaldi Mat Karo
Company bolegi "2 din mein reply do." Most of the time, 4-5 din mil sakte hain. Politely bolo: "I'm very interested, could I have until [date] to give you my final decision? I want to make a well-informed choice."
Salary Expectations Mein Common Galtiyan#
Galti 1: "Kuch Bhi Chalega, Jo Aap Dein"
Yeh kehna = "Main desperate hoon." HR samajh jaata hai aur lowest possible offer deta hai. Hamesha ek range rakhho.
Galti 2: "Mere Dost Ko 12 LPA Mil Raha Hai, Mujhe Bhi Chahiye"
Tumhara dost ka package tumhare kisi kaam ka nahi. Different company, different role, different skills. Apna market research karo.
Galti 3: Monthly Expenses Calculate Karke Salary Maangna
"Mere rent ₹15,000, khaana ₹10,000, EMI ₹8,000, toh mujhe ₹40,000 chahiye." Company ko tumhare expenses se koi matlab nahi. Unhe tumhari value chahiye. Kya tum unke liye kitna worth ho, woh basis hai.
Galti 4: Lying About Other Offers
"Mujhe Google se offer hai 20 LPA ka." Agar jhooth hai aur pakde gaye, toh career damage hoga. Sirf real offers mention karo.
Galti 5: Salary Mein Negotiation = Greedy
Nahi. Professional world mein negotiation expected hai. Hiring managers khud kehte hain "I expected the candidate to negotiate." Tumhara dar imaginary hai.
Sector-Wise Freshers Salary Quick Reference (2026)#

| BFSI (Banking, Insurance) | 3-6 LPA |
| Consulting (Big 4) | 6-12 LPA |

| HealthTech | 4-8 LPA |
| Government/PSU | 5-12 LPA (via exams) |

Agar Low Salary Offer Aaya Toh Kya Karein?#
Kabhi kabhi offer aata hai aur CTC dikhke dil doob jaata hai. 2.5 LPA? 3 LPA? Kya karein?
Option 1: Negotiate
"Thank you for the offer. I'm excited about the role. Based on my research and skills, I was hoping for something closer to ₹X. Is there room to discuss?"
Option 2: Accept + Plan
Agar first job hai aur koi better option nahi hai, toh accept karo. Lekin plan banao:
- 6 months experience leke skills build karo
- Side mein DSA ya relevant skills practice karo
- 1 year baad switch karo. First switch mein 50-100% salary hike milna normal hai India mein
Option 3: Walk Away
Agar offer insultingly low hai (like ₹8,000/month for a B.Tech graduate), toh walk away karo. Kuch companies freshers ki desperation ka faayda uthaati hain. Tumhara time aur skills us se zyada valuable hain.
Reality: Bahut saare successful engineers ne 3-3.5 LPA se career shuru kiya hai aur 2-3 years mein 10+ LPA pe pahunch gaye. Starting salary permanent nahi hai. Growth rate zyada important hai.
Salary Ke Alawa Kya Dekhein Offer Mein?#
Freshers salary pe itna focus karte hain ki baaki cheezein ignore kar dete hain. Lekin yeh bhi equally important hai:
1. Learning Opportunities
Kya company mein tum relevant tech pe kaam karoge? Ya legacy systems pe maintain karoge? 2 saal React aur AWS pe kaam karke tumhari market value double ho jayegi. 2 saal mainframe pe kaam karke? Not so much.
2. Work-Life Balance
₹8 LPA lekin 14 ghante kaam vs ₹5 LPA lekin 8 ghante kaam. Second option mein tum side mein courses kar sakte ho, freelance kar sakte ho, ya DSA practice kar sakte ho for a better job.
3. Brand Name
First job mein brand name matters for future switches. "Ex-TCS" ya "Ex-Flipkart" resume pe weight deta hai. ₹50,000 zyada salary ke liye random startup join karne se achha hai ki pehle ek recognizable brand mein experience lo.
4. Team and Manager
Achha manager tumhe 2 saal mein 5 saal ki growth de sakta hai. Interview mein puchho: "What does the team look like? Who would I be working with?"
5. Location
Bangalore mein ₹6 LPA after rent aur expenses = ₹20,000 savings. Hometown mein ₹4.5 LPA lekin WFH = ₹25,000+ savings. Location ka impact underestimate mat karo.
Agar Abhi Campus Mein Ho Toh Kya Karein?#
Placement season aane se 3-6 months pehle:
- Target company list banao (mass, mid-tier, product, tino mein apply karo)
- Har company ki salary research karo (AmbitionBox pe sab milega)
- DSA practice karo (LeetCode pe minimum 150 problems)
- 2-3 solid projects banao (resume ke liye)
- Ek salary range decide karo (minimum kya loge, ideal kya chahte ho)
Placement ke din jab HR puchhe salary expectations, tumhare paas ready answer hoga. No panic.
