Your resume looks good, but you get zero callbacks. You know you can do the job, but the document isn't making the case. Let's fix that.
Recruiters and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) scan for specific patterns. If your resume doesn't match, it's invisible. This is about translating your skills into the language they're looking for.
The core structure that works#
Keep it simple. Recruiters spend about seven seconds on a first scan. A clean, predictable structure wins every time.
- Contact information and links (GitHub, portfolio, LinkedIn).
- A short professional summary or objective (2-3 lines).
- Technical skills section.
- Professional experience.
- Projects (especially important for juniors).
- Education.
Order matters. For senior engineers, lead with a powerful summary and skills. For those earlier in their career, education and personal projects can come before limited work history.
The keyword table: what to actually include#
This isn't about stuffing. It's about listing the real tools you use. ATS software looks for exact matches. Look at job descriptions for your target roles. You can use a free JD decoder to see what terms are most frequent.
Here’s a realistic breakdown of what to list and where.
| Hard Skills & Tools | Frameworks & Libraries | Methodologies & Concepts | Soft Skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Python, Java, TypeScript | React, Node.js, Django | Agile/Scrum, CI/CD | Problem-solving |
| SQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB | Spring Boot, .NET Core | RESTful APIs, Microservices | Team collaboration |
| Git, Docker, Kubernetes | AWS (S3, EC2, Lambda) | Test-Driven Development | Clear communication |
| Linux, Bash, Terraform | TensorFlow, PyTorch | System Design, OOP | Mentoring |
Don't list everything. Pick the 15-20 most relevant to your target job. Place this section right after your summary.
Rewriting your bullets: from task to impact#
This is the most important change you can make. Stop describing your duties. Start showing your results. Use this formula: Accomplished [X] by doing [Y], resulting in [Z].
Before: Responsible for backend API development using Python.
After: Engineered a new REST API endpoint in Python (Django) that reduced data retrieval time by 40% for the main client dashboard.
Before: Helped fix bugs in the codebase.
After: Identified and resolved a critical memory leak in the Java service, decreasing average server load by 15% and preventing weekly outages.
Before: Worked on migrating to microservices.
After: Led the decomposition of a monolithic Node.js application into 5 microservices, improving deployment frequency from bi-weekly to daily.
See the difference? The "after" versions are specific, use action verbs, and include a metric. Quantify everything you can: percentages, time saved, users affected, revenue influenced. For more examples, check out our blog.
Passing the ats: formatting basics#
Your beautifully designed resume is useless if the ATS can't read it.
- Use a single-column layout. Multi-column designs often scramble data.
- Stick to standard section headings: "Work Experience," "Education," "Skills."
- Save as a .docx or a simple PDF. Some older ATS choke on PDFs, but .docx is always safe.
- Use standard fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Garamond. No graphics, icons, or photos.
- Put your contact info at the very top, not in a header or footer.
Test your resume yourself. Copy and paste the text into a plain text editor. If it looks jumbled, the ATS will see the same mess. You can also run it through a free ATS checker to see how it scores.
Junior vs. senior: what changes#
Your resume's focus shifts with experience.
Junior / New Grad:
- Lead with education, relevant coursework, and GPA (if good).
- The "Projects" section is your star. Treat it like work experience.
- List every language and tool you've touched in school or personal projects.
- Objective statement is fine: "CS graduate seeking a junior backend role to apply skills in Python and SQL."
Senior / Staff:
- Lead with a professional summary packed with keywords: "Senior Software Engineer with 8+ years building scalable distributed systems in fintech."
- "Projects" section is optional. Focus on work impact.
- Skills section is curated, not exhaustive. Only list what you're an expert in.
- Show leadership: "Mentored 3 junior engineers," "Led architecture review board."
Final checklist before you send#
- Does every bullet start with a strong action verb?
- Have you included at least one metric in 80% of your bullets?
- Is your skills section a direct match for 70% of the keywords in the job description?
- Is the file format a simple .docx?
- Did you remove all graphics, columns, and fancy formatting?
- Is your contact information (phone, email, LinkedIn) correct and at the top?
- Did you tailor your summary for this specific job title?
- Have you proofread it, then had a friend proofread it?

FAQ#
How long should a software engineer resume be?
One page for under 10 years of experience. Two pages are acceptable for senior engineers with significant, relevant accomplishments. Anything longer is rarely read.
Should I include a cover letter?
If the application allows it, yes. Use it to explain a specific project from your resume that fits the job perfectly. It's your chance to show genuine interest.
How do I list programming languages?
Create a "Technical Skills" section. Group them: "Languages: Python, Java, TypeScript." Don't rate yourself with bars or percentages. Just list them.
What if I have gaps in my employment?
Be prepared to discuss it honestly in an interview. On the resume, you can use years only (e.g., 2020-2022) instead of months to minimize small gaps.
How often should I update my resume?
Every time you finish a major project, get a promotion, or learn a significant new skill. Don't wait until you're job hunting to remember what you did.
