Data & AI Jobs for Freshers in India: 2026 Guide
You're graduating in 2026 with a data or AI degree and almost no experience, and every listing you open asks for two to four years of it. That wall is standard in this field. The entry route exists. It's just narrower than the brochures say, and you can plan around it with real numbers.
What the listings actually look like right now#
Here's a dated snapshot, not a market survey. On 14 October 2026, the JobRise live jobs feed (jobrise.io) showed 158 open Data & AI listings in India, which you can browse in our Data & AI jobs in India section. Of those, 139 went up in the last 30 days and 79 in the last 7 days. The feed is moving fast.
Now the number that stings. Only 1 of those 158 listings carries an obviously entry-level title, meaning words like intern, graduate, junior, or trainee. That one is "Junior R&D Engineer (GEN AI/ML)" at Ubisoft. Read that again. Freshers don't get hired through a wide front door labelled "fresher". They get hired through narrower doors, and you need to know where those doors sit.
The country picture gives you scale. Across all categories, India had 1,867 open listings on the same day, with 1,345 posted in the last 30 days, and those figures sit in the JobRise Hiring Report: India. Data & AI is a slice of that, not the whole market.

Where the hiring is concentrated#
Companies with the most open Data & AI listings in this snapshot were Bosch Group (11), Okta (7), V2 AI (4), then Outreach (3), Coursera (3), Stripe (3), Google (3), Lokal App (3), Mongodb (3), and 2070Health (3). Some of those names are recruiters or staffing firms, so a listing under them may sit inside a different end client. Ask who the end client is before you apply.
Cities: Bengaluru leads with 53 listings. Then Hyderabad (9), Mumbai (8), Gurugram (8), and Pune (6). If you can be in Bengaluru, your options multiply several times over. Job type is nearly all full-time: 157 full-time against 1 contract.
The titles you should actually search for#
Don't search only "fresher". Search the titles real listings use, then filter for the ones with the lowest stated experience bar. Titles live in this snapshot include "Data Analyst" at Ericsson, "Senior Data Analyst" at Okta, "People Business Intelligence Analyst" at Godaddy, "Strategy and Analytics Business Partner" at Stripe, and "Director of Applied Science and Engineering - Knowledge Graphs & AI" at Outreach. The last two are senior, and you should skip them, but "Data Analyst" and "People Business Intelligence Analyst" are worth opening because some teams will take a strong fresher even when the title is plain.
One listing in this snapshot names freshers outright: "Hiring Generative AI Engineer - Freshers 2026/27 (Computer Science or AI Only)" at Digitals AI Inc. Note the restriction in brackets. When a role says CS or AI only, a different degree gets filtered out at the form stage, whatever your portfolio says. That's the catch.
What the pay looks like#
Only 19 of the 158 listings showed pay at all. Treat silence as normal, not as a bad sign. Of the ones that did post numbers for "Data Analyst" roles: Clinton Health Access Initiative showed ₹3.0-4.0 LPA, Yulu Bikes ₹7.0-12.0 LPA, Millions Advisory ₹5.0-17.0 LPA, Trigent Software Private Limited showed ₹10.8-10.8 LPA for a "Data Analyst L5" role, PayU ₹7.0-15.0 LPA, and Appitsimple infotek Pvt. Ltd. ₹1.0-3.0 LPA.
That range is wide on purpose. Fresher data analyst pay in India commonly lands somewhere between ₹3 and ₹8 LPA in practice, with AI engineering roles often higher and small firms lower, but these vary by city, skill, and company. Verify the current official figures for any offer before you accept.
Skills employers here expect#
Reading the listings tells you what to learn. For analyst roles: SQL at a level where you can write joins and window functions without looking them up, Python or R for cleaning and analysis, and Excel for the quick work that never goes away. For AI roles: Python first, then a real grasp of how models are trained and evaluated, plus experience with LLM APIs or model serving if you can get it.
Two things matter more than a certificate list. One is proof that you finished something. The other is that you can explain your own work out loud in an interview, in plain language, without hiding behind jargon. Practice the walkthrough.
The proof you need to build#
Since only 1 in 158 listings is openly for juniors, your portfolio is doing the work a job title would normally do. Three projects beat ten half-finished notebooks. Ship these:
- One end-to-end data project: you scraped or pulled a public dataset, cleaned it, ran analysis, and wrote up three findings in a short post
- One SQL-heavy project: a schema, ten queries of rising difficulty, and one dashboard built on the result
- One AI project with a working demo: a small app calling an LLM, a fine-tuned model, or an evaluation setup comparing two models on a task
- A GitHub profile where each repo has a README that states the problem, the data, the method, and the result
- One certification at most, from a recognised provider, only if it fills a real gap in your knowledge
For certifications, the Google Data Analytics certificate and similar programs are widely recognised in India. They open fewer doors than a strong project does, so treat them as structure for learning, not as a badge.
A resume bullet that works with zero experience#
Most fresher bullets read like this: "Good knowledge of Python and data analysis." That sentence tells a hiring manager nothing and gets skimmed past.
Rewrite it with a number, a tool, and a result:
"Cleaned and analysed a 4.2 lakh-row Indian retail transactions dataset using Python (pandas) and SQL, identified a 12% drop in repeat purchases after a pricing change, and presented three retention recommendations in an interactive Streamlit dashboard."
That bullet shows a tool, a scale, a finding, and an output. You can build the project behind it in a weekend. If you want help shaping more bullets like this, our free resume builder lays out a clean one-page fresher CV.
Where entry-level openings get posted#
Company career pages are still the highest-quality source, especially for the firms listed above. Job boards and aggregator feeds like JobRise catch listings from smaller firms and staffing agencies that you'd never find on your own. Campus placement cells and alumni referrals keep working, and referrals move fresher CVs past the first filter more reliably than cold applications do.
Set a habit of checking the feed daily. In this snapshot, 79 of 158 listings went up in the last 7 days, so new roles appear faster than a weekly check can catch. Check every morning.
The 7-step plan#
- Pick a lane in week one: data analyst or AI engineer. Don't apply to both until you have one solid CV.
- Build three projects in four weeks, one end-to-end, one SQL-heavy, one with a working AI demo. Publish each with a README.
- Rewrite your resume so every bullet has a number, a tool, and a result. Keep it to one page.
- Make a target list of 30 companies from the listings above plus firms in your city, and find one contact at each.
- Apply to 10 roles a week, and send a short note to a contact or recruiter at 5 of them. Track everything in a spreadsheet.
- Practise two interview formats: SQL questions on paper, and a 10-minute walkthrough of your best project. Record yourself once and fix the filler.
- Review the numbers every two weeks. If you've had no callbacks in 30 applications, the resume is the problem, not the market.
FAQ#
How many data and AI jobs for freshers are there in India right now?
On 14 October 2026, JobRise showed 158 open Data & AI listings in India, but only 1 with an obviously entry-level title. Freshers get hired through plain "Data Analyst" titles and referral routes more than through roles labelled for juniors.
Do I need a certification to get my first data job in India?
No, but one recognised certificate can help you structure learning and pass early filters. Projects with clear results move your CV further than a stack of badges.
What salary should a fresher data analyst expect?
Listings in this snapshot that showed pay ranged from ₹1.0-3.0 LPA to ₹10.8 LPA for analyst roles, and most listings showed no pay at all. Fresher offers commonly land between ₹3 and ₹8 LPA, so verify the official figure for any specific offer.
Should I apply to roles asking for two years of experience?
Apply anyway if you meet most of the skills listed and can show equivalent project work. Skip roles that name a degree restriction or a senior title in the job name.
Which city is best for a data or AI fresher in India?
Bengaluru, by a wide margin, with 53 of the 158 open listings in this snapshot. Hyderabad, Mumbai, Gurugram, and Pune follow with single-digit counts.
