Entry-Level Data & AI Jobs in the UK: How to Get Hired in 2026

JobRise Team8 min read

You want a first job in data or AI in the UK, and almost every listing you see asks for two years of experience you do not have. That is not just your impression. The numbers back it up, and understanding them changes how you should search.

What the market actually looks like right now#

On 14 October 2026, the JobRise live jobs feed (jobrise.io) showed 188 open Data & AI listings in the United Kingdom, as counted from open listings rather than a market survey. Of those, 156 were posted in the last 30 days and 87 in the last 7 days, so the market is moving. You can see the current list on the UK data jobs hub.

Now the hard part. Only 1 of those 188 listings had an entry-level looking title: "Graduate Machine Learning Researcher" at Longshot Systems Ltd. One out of 188. That is the single most useful number in this whole article, because it tells you the graduate-labelled front door is tiny.

This does not mean entry-level work does not exist. It means it is hidden behind titles that do not say "junior". A lot of what gets called mid-level is really a first serious role for someone with a decent portfolio.

The titles you should actually search for#

The example roles in the snapshot show the range: "Data Scientist - GenAI - Consultant" at Infosys Consulting - Europe, "Senior Director, Analytics & Business Intelligence" at Nuvei, "Interim Lead AI Engineer" at Ki, "Senior Data Engineer" at Zoopla, "Data Engineering Manager" at Zoopla, "Data Analyst" at Test Triangle, "Graduate Machine Learning Researcher" at Longshot Systems Ltd, and "Data Centre Design Engineer" at Fuse Energy.

Most of those are senior. But "Data Analyst" at Test Triangle and the Longshot graduate role are realistic targets. Search broadly and ignore seniority words in the title.

  • Data Analyst, Reporting Analyst, MI Analyst
  • Graduate Data Scientist, Graduate Machine Learning Researcher
  • Junior Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, Insight Analyst
  • Business Intelligence Analyst, Data Quality Analyst
  • Machine Learning Engineer (junior), Applied Scientist (entry)
  • Data Steward, Data Governance Analyst, Technical Data Analyst
  • SQL Developer, BI Developer, Analytics Consultant

Job types are almost all permanent. In the snapshot, 185 of 188 listings were Full-time and 3 were Contract. Do not plan a route in through short-term contract work.

Who is hiring, and where#

The companies with the most open listings in the snapshot were Anthropic (13), Intercom (13), Ellison Institute of Technology (7), Spotify (7), Zopa (5), Qureight Ltd (4), interactive investor (4), VANRATH (4), Cohere (4), and INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL Limited (3). Some of these are recruiters or staffing firms, so a single name can cover several employers.

Location matters more than people expect. London had 85 listings, Oxford 7, Dublin 7, Leeds 5, and Belfast 5. Dublin appearing in a UK feed usually means a role advertised with UK reach or a cross-border employer, so read the location line carefully before you apply. Outside London, the market thins out fast.

For the wider picture, the JobRise Hiring Report for United Kingdom shows 2,742 open listings across all categories, with 2,245 posted in the last 30 days. Data & AI is a small slice of a much larger hiring market, which is useful context when you feel the sector is closed to you.

What employers want, and how to prove it#

For the roles realistically in reach, the core is SQL, Python, and a visualisation tool such as Power BI or Tableau. Add Excel at a level beyond pivot tables, some statistics, and the ability to explain a result to a non-technical manager. For AI-adjacent roles, add working with language model APIs and basic evaluation of model output.

Proof beats claims. Employers here want to see finished work.

  • Two or three projects on GitHub with a README that explains the question, the data, and the answer
  • One dashboard you built end to end, with a short write-up of what decision it supported
  • A portfolio site or a single PDF with screenshots and links
  • One recognised certification, such as a cloud data credential or a SQL cert, if you have time
  • Evidence you can write clearly, since half the job is communicating findings

How do I show I can do the job without job experience?

Treat a project like a job. State the problem, describe your data, show your method, and end with what someone should do next. A hiring manager reading that sees someone who already works this way.

Here is a resume bullet with zero experience, rewritten the way I would write it.

Before: "Researched data for a university project using Python."

After: "Built a Python and SQL pipeline on 40,000 rows of public transport data to find the three busiest delay corridors, then presented findings to a five-person seminar and wrote a two-page summary recommending timetable changes."

The second version names the tool, the volume, the output, and the audience. That is what makes a recruiter stop scrolling.

Where entry-level openings get posted#

Graduate schemes at large employers open in fixed windows, usually autumn for the following year. Smaller companies hire year-round and rarely label roles as graduate positions. Recruiters and staffing firms in the snapshot, such as VANRATH, INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL Limited, and Hays, handle a lot of junior volume, so registering with two or three of them is worth an afternoon.

Set alerts on the main UK job boards and on the company careers pages you care about. Check the UK data jobs hub a few times a week, since 87 of the 188 listings in the snapshot were under a week old. Speed of application matters more than most candidates think.

The 7-step plan#

  1. Pick one lane. Data analyst, data engineer, or machine learning. Pick one for the next three months, because scattered applications read as unsure.

  2. Close the skill gaps for that lane. For analyst roles that means SQL, Python basics, and Power BI. For ML it means Python properly, plus model training and evaluation.

  3. Build three projects with real data. Public datasets are fine. What matters is the question you answer and the clarity of your write-up.

  4. Rewrite your CV around evidence. Use the tool at our resume builder to structure it, then rewrite every bullet to name tools, scale, and outcome.

  5. Get your portfolio in one place. A simple page with three project summaries and links beats a scattered set of repos.

  6. Apply in batches, and track them. Ten tailored applications a week beats forty copy-paste ones. Keep a spreadsheet of role, date, contact, and next step.

  7. Prepare for the first screen. Have a two-minute story of why data, why this lane, and what you built. Practice it out loud until it sounds like you.

Salary reality check. Only 71 of the 188 listings in the snapshot showed pay. As posted: "Data Analyst" at Likewize £42K-42K, "Data Analyst" at INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL Limited £75K-75K, "Senior Data Analyst - R2R" at Just Eat Takeaway.com £44K-44K, "Data Analyst" at Anson Mccade £111K-111K, "Data Analyst/Technical BA/Data Governance" at Hays £42K-42K, and "Information and Data Analyst" at Platinum Recruitment £38K-38K. These vary wildly by seniority and by whether the listing is a recruiter's advert, so treat them as posted figures, not a market rate. Verify current pay on the official listing or the employer's own careers page before you negotiate.

FAQ#

How many entry-level data and AI jobs are there in the UK?

In the JobRise snapshot dated 14 October 2026, 1 of 188 open Data & AI listings had an entry-level looking title. The rest were mid-level or senior, so plan to apply for roles slightly above what the title suggests.

Do I need a degree to get into data in the UK?

Not always, but a quantitative degree helps for graduate-scheme routes. Without one, projects plus a certification and a clear portfolio carry more weight than another online course.

Which skills should I learn first for a data analyst role?

SQL first, then Python for data work, then Power BI or Tableau. Get comfortable with joins, window functions, and explaining a chart to someone who does not work in data.

How long does it usually take to break in?

Expect several months of consistent applications if you are starting from scratch. The 156 listings posted in the last 30 days in the snapshot show roles do keep appearing, so persistence matters.

Are AI roles realistic for someone with no experience?

Direct AI engineering roles are hard without a track record. Aim at data analyst or junior data engineer roles first, add language model projects to your portfolio, then move across once you have real delivery behind you.
