Entry-Level Finance Jobs in the UK: How to Get Hired in 2026
You want a first job in finance in the UK, and every listing you open seems to want two years of experience you do not have. That is a real problem, but the numbers are less brutal than they look. You need to know which roles are genuinely open to beginners, and how to prove you can do the work anyway.
What the market looks like right now#
Here is a dated snapshot, not a forecast. On 14 October 2026, the live finance jobs feed for the United Kingdom showed 135 open listings, with 102 posted in the last 30 days and 76 in the last 7 days. You can browse the current list on the JobRise finance jobs hub, and it moves daily, so check back before you plan around it.
Of those 135 open listings, only 8 had titles that look entry-level: intern, graduate, junior, trainee and similar wording. That is roughly one listing in seventeen. The rest asked for qualified or experienced people. Treat that ratio as your reality check. Graduate schemes and junior roles exist, but you will be applying into a small slice.
The country picture is wider. Across all categories in the United Kingdom there were 2,742 open listings, and 2,245 of those were posted in the last 30 days. The JobRise Hiring Report for the United Kingdom carries those country numbers, which tells you where the overall hiring volume sits even when finance is tight.

Where the junior roles actually are#
The 8 entry-level looking listings include "Finance Graduate" at AG Barr, "Accounting Graduate - 18 Month Program" at Red Bull, "Graduate Associate, Tax" at Interpath Advisory, and three "2027 Graduate - Investment Analyst" roles at Barnett Waddingham, in Liverpool, Birmingham and Cheltenham. Note the city spread. Three of the eight are outside London.
Barnett Waddingham had 11 open finance listings in total on that date, more than any other employer on the feed, and some of those are graduate routes. Lane Clark & Peacock had 5, Nomura 4, Palantir 4, Man Group 3, Stripe 3, Kroo Bank Ltd 3, Moneyfarm 2, and Porsche Cars GB Ltd 2. Some of these names are recruiters or staffing firms rather than the end employer, so read the listing carefully before you assume who pays your salary.
Geography matters more than people admit. London held 70 of the 135 open finance listings. Manchester had 5, Birmingham 5, Leeds 4, and Cheltenham 4. If you are outside London and cannot relocate, your search is narrower and you should widen the job titles you will accept.
Job titles worth watching#
The roles open on that date skew senior, but they tell you which teams are hiring. Examples include "Senior Technical Accountant" at Zopa, "Management Accountant" at Lovey, "Investment Banker, Greentech Industrials & Infrastructure - Senior Associate/VP" at Nomura, "Financial Accounting Manager - Full Time - East Sussex" at Freedom Leisure, "Compliance Manager" at Reeve, "Wealth Manager" at Moneyfarm, "Investment Consultant" at Moneyfarm, and "FP&A Analyst" at Lanes Group.
Use those as a map. Management accounting, FP&A, compliance, and tax all have junior entry points even when this week's listing is for a manager. Apply to the team, not just the exact title in front of you.
The pay question#
Only 1 of the 135 listings showed a salary on the day of this snapshot. It was "Senior Credit Underwriter | UK" at Ramp, posted at £74K to £100K with equity offered. That is a senior role and not a guide for a first job.
For entry-level finance roles in the UK, reported starting pay varies widely by city, employer type, and whether the role sits inside a formal graduate scheme. Verify current rates on the official listing and on the employer's own careers page before you negotiate anything. Never plan your rent around a number you saw in a forum thread.
What employers expect when you have no experience#
You need proof, not adjectives. Hiring managers in finance want to see that you can work with numbers, follow rules, and explain what you did.
- One spreadsheet project with real data, cleaned, analysed, and explained in plain English
- Working knowledge of Excel or Google Sheets: pivot tables, lookups, and reconciliations
- A short written summary of a listed company's accounts, two pages at most
- Familiarity with the basics of UK GAAP or IFRS, even at textbook level
- Any certification you have started: AAT, ACCA Applied Skills, CFA Level 1, or a bookkeeping course
- Evidence you understand the employer's business, read their annual report before the interview
- Two referees, a tutor and a manager from any job, part-time work counts
- A clean, consistent CV with dates that add up
Part-time work counts more than you think. If you reconciled tills, chased invoices, or handled cash in a shop or bar, that is finance-adjacent work and you should say so.
How to write the experience you do not have#
Most zero-experience CVs describe duties. Rewrite yours to describe output. Here is a before and after for a student who did a college project and worked weekends in retail.
Before: "Helped with a college accounting project and worked part-time at a retailer."
After: "Reconciled 1,200 rows of mock supplier data in Excel, identified 34 duplicate invoices worth £2,180 in total, and presented the findings to a four-person class panel in a 10-minute walkthrough."
The second version names the tool, the volume, the finding, and the audience. It is honest, and it reads like work. You can build bullets in this shape with the JobRise resume builder if you want a template that keeps formatting consistent.
Where entry-level openings get posted#
Graduate schemes open on fixed cycles, usually autumn for the following year, so the "2027 Graduate" titles in this snapshot make sense. Company career pages carry the schemes themselves. Job boards carry the overflow and the mid-year replacements.
Recruiters and staffing firms appear frequently in finance listings, including several names on this feed. Register with two or three that specialise in accounting support or financial services, then keep your own search running in parallel. Recruiters work for the employer, and they move fast when a brief lands.
Your 7-step plan#
- Pick one lane: accounting support, FP&A, tax, compliance, or investments. Applying to all five reads as unfocused.
- Build one proof project this month. A reconciliation, a budget model, or a company accounts summary, done properly beats three done badly.
- Rewrite your CV bullets in the output format shown above. Cut every duty line that does not show a result.
- Set up saved searches on the finance jobs hub and check them twice a week. New listings on this feed appeared at a rate of 76 in the last 7 days.
- Apply to the named employers with graduate routes first. On this snapshot that meant AG Barr, Red Bull, Interpath Advisory, and Barnett Waddingham.
- Register with two finance recruiters and tell them exactly which lane you picked in step 1.
- Prepare two stories for interviews: one about a mistake with numbers, one about a time you followed a rule you disagreed with. Both come up.

FAQ#
How hard is it to get an entry-level finance job in the UK in 2026?
On 14 October 2026, 8 of 135 open finance listings on JobRise looked entry-level, so the junior slice is small. It is competitive but not closed, and candidates with a proof project and a clear lane get interviews.
Do I need a degree to work in finance in the UK?
Not always. Accounting support, bookkeeping, and some operations roles accept AAT or equivalent experience, while investment and graduate scheme routes usually ask for a degree. Check the listing wording and the employer's own requirements.
Which UK cities have the most finance jobs?
In this snapshot London had 70 of 135 open finance listings, with Manchester and Birmingham at 5 each, Leeds at 4, and Cheltenham at 4. Outside London you will need a wider set of titles and more patience.
Should I apply to recruiters or directly to employers?
Do both. Recruiters and staffing firms hold a share of finance listings on this feed, but they prioritise candidates who match an active brief, so keep applying directly in parallel.
When do UK finance graduate schemes open?
Most large schemes open in autumn for intake the following year, which is why you see titles like "2027 Graduate" in October listings. Smaller employers hire year-round, so keep checking the boards between cycles.
