Entry-Level Sales Jobs in the UK: How to Get Hired in 2026

JobRise Team7 min read

You have no sales experience, the adverts ask for one to two years, and you do not know where to start. That is the normal entry point. Most candidates break in through one of three doors: retail and field sales that hire on personality, graduate programmes with structured training, or a small company that cannot pay for a proven closer and will teach someone hungry.

The market is not empty. On 14 October 2026, the JobRise live jobs feed showed 360 open sales listings in the United Kingdom, with 289 posted in the last 30 days and 186 in the last 7 days. Those are open listings, not a market survey, but the pace tells you roles are moving.

What the data says about entry-level openings#

Of those 360 listings, 9 carried entry-level looking titles such as intern, graduate, junior or trainee. That is a small share, and it matches reality: employers rarely label a job "no experience needed". They label it "Sales Associate", "Sales Executive" or "Account Executive" and expect you to show potential.

The 9 included three Red Bull graduate programmes, "Graduate Sales Account Manager" at SeedLegals, "Junior Sales & Marketing Assistant" at Echo Promotions, and "Graduate Account Executive - London - German or Dutch Speaker" at Suade. Notice the language requirement on the last one. Graduate sales roles often pay more if you speak a second language.

Junior titles you will actually see advertised in the UK:

  • Sales Assistant or Sales Associate (retail, easiest entry point)
  • Door to Door Sales Executive (Charity Link had one open)
  • Graduate Sales Account Manager
  • Graduate or Junior Account Executive
  • Sales Development Representative or Business Development Executive
  • Trainee Sales Executive, often with a named training scheme

Where the jobs actually sit#

London dominates with 188 of the 360 listings. Outside London, Manchester has 10, Birmingham 7, Leeds 5 and Glasgow 5. If you are in the North or Scotland, expect to apply harder and consider field sales or recruiter-led roles that cover a region.

By type, 348 listings are full-time and 12 part-time. Part-time retail is your realistic foot in the door if you are studying: Kurt Geiger had two temporary Sales Assistant roles open at Harrods Mens and Bentalls Kingston. Temporary still counts as experience on a CV.

The companies with the most open listings on 14 October 2026 were Risco Group (18), Kurt Geiger (17), Stripe (16), Charity Link (12), Figma (11), Anthropic (9), Red Bull (9), Lanes Group (9), Samsara (8) and Vercel (8). Some of these names are recruiters or staffing firms rather than the final employer. That is normal. You can browse the full current list in the JobRise sales jobs hub for the United Kingdom.

What employers want before you have results#

Without a track record, you trade proof of intent for proof of skill. The fastest way to look hireable is to have already done something that resembles the job.

  • A short sales or CRM certification (HubSpot Sales Software, Salesforce Trailhead, Google Digital Garage)
  • A portfolio: three outreach emails you wrote, a cold call script, a mock discovery call recording, notes from a real informational interview
  • Any customer facing work at all: retail, hospitality, fundraising, tutoring, a university society sponsorship drive
  • Numbers from that work: hours worked, customers served per shift, money raised, retention on a membership drive
  • Basic tools: a CRM you have clicked around in, LinkedIn Sales Navigator awareness, spreadsheet skills for pipeline tracking
  • Two referees: a manager from any job, and a tutor or society lead

Fundraising and charity work is genuinely persuasive. "Door to Door Sales Executive" at Charity Link is the kind of role where a record of asking strangers for money on the street is the entire interview.

The zero-experience resume bullet#

Most freshers write "Good communication skills, hardworking, team player". That gets skipped. Rewrite it around an action and a number.

Before: "Responsible for helping at the university rag society events and talking to people."

After: "Recruited 24 local businesses to sponsor our RAG week, raising £3,100 in six weeks by cold calling, following up by email and tracking commitments in a shared spreadsheet."

Same experience. The second version shows prospecting, follow up, and record keeping. Use a resume builder to keep the formatting clean and let the wording do the work.

The salary question#

Only 4 of the 360 listings on 14 October 2026 showed pay: "Sales & Marketing Director" at Corecruitment International (£80K), "Marketing and Business Development Executive" at Centum Engineering Ltd (£35K), "Junior Sales & Marketing Assistant" at Echo Promotions (£25K), and "Marketing Account Manager" at Kensa Creative (£38K). That is a thin sample.

For entry-level sales in the UK, expect roughly £23,000 to £28,000 base for retail and junior SDR work, £25,000 to £32,000 for graduate schemes in London, and more where commission is on top. These are typical reported ranges, they vary by city and sector, and you should verify the current official figures with the employer and with GOV.UK guidance on minimum wage and National Living Wage before you accept.

The 7-step plan#

  1. Pick your door. Retail and field sales for speed, graduate schemes for training, SDR roles for a tech career. Do not apply to all three at once with the same CV.
  2. Get one credential in a weekend. HubSpot Sales Software is free and takes a few hours. Put it on your CV with the date.
  3. Build the small portfolio described above. Three emails, one script, one recording. Store it as a PDF link on your CV.
  4. Rewrite two bullets using the action-and-number pattern. Anything counts: part-time work, volunteering, a society you ran.
  5. Set up alerts and check the feed weekly. Look at the current sales listings in the United Kingdom and note which names recur, then follow those companies on LinkedIn.
  6. Apply in batches of ten, and log each one: company, role, date, contact name, follow-up date. Follow up once after five working days.
  7. Prepare one story for the interview using STAR: the situation, what you personally did, the number, what you learned. Interviewers in sales want to hear you ask for something.

How to talk about money and progression#

Ask about the commission structure, the ramp period, and what the top and bottom performers earned last year. A good employer answers plainly. If they dodge, that is information too.

For wider context on how many roles are open across the country, the JobRise Hiring Report for the United Kingdom tracks 2,742 open listings overall, with 2,245 posted in the last 30 days. Sales is one slice of that.

FAQ#

Do I need a degree to get into sales in the UK?

No. Retail sales, field sales and many SDR roles hire on attitude and evidence of resilience. A degree helps for structured graduate schemes like the Red Bull programmes, but customer facing work and a small portfolio often matter more.

What is the difference between a Sales Development Representative and an Account Executive?

An SDR opens conversations and books meetings. An Account Executive runs the demo, handles objections and closes the deal. Most people start as an SDR and move up in twelve to twenty four months.

Should I apply to roles that ask for one to two years of experience?

Yes, if you can show relevant proof. Apply when you meet about sixty percent of the criteria and can demonstrate the core skill, which in sales is usually prospecting, communication and follow up.

Are recruitment agencies worth registering with for junior sales roles?

Often yes. Several of the companies with the most open listings on 14 October 2026 were recruiters or staffing firms. Register with two or three that specialise in sales, and be clear about the salary floor you will accept.

How long does it usually take to land an entry-level sales job?

It varies a lot by city and how targeted your applications are. Candidates who apply in batches, follow up once, and interview-prep with a real story tend to get offers faster than those sending generic applications.
