How to Get a Data & AI Job in India as a Foreigner
You want a data or AI job in India, but you are not Indian, and you are not sure which visa route even applies to you. The market is real and moving, but hiring a foreigner costs an employer extra paperwork, so you have to make your case stronger than a local applicant's.
Here is what the market looked like as of 14 October 2026. The JobRise live jobs feed for data and AI roles in India showed 158 open listings, with 139 posted in the last 30 days and 79 in the last 7 days. That is a fast-moving slice, not a market survey, and you can scan the current openings yourself in the JobRise data jobs hub for India.
The visa routes that usually apply#
For paid employment in India, the standard route is the Employment Visa. It generally requires a concrete job offer from a registered Indian entity, a contract or appointment letter, and pay above a threshold that the government sets and revises. The commonly cited threshold is a salary of around USD 25,000 per year, but this number changes and categories differ, so check the current rules on the official Bureau of Immigration and Ministry of Home Affairs websites before you plan anything.
Some nationalities can get an e-Business Visa for short scouting trips, interviews, or setting up a venture, but that is not permission to take a salaried job. Do not work on a tourist visa. Penalties are real and it ruins your record.
The Employment Visa is normally granted for one year or the contract term, extendable in India, and it converts to a multiple-entry permit in many cases. Registration with the FRRO within 14 days of arrival is required for stays beyond 180 days. Rules vary by nationality and by consulate, so confirm the current checklist with the Indian mission in your country before booking flights.
If you already work for a multinational with an India office, an intra-company transfer is often the smoothest path. The paperwork still runs through the Employment Visa category, but the employer has done it before.

Language expectations, stated honestly#
English is the working language of Indian tech and data teams. Job descriptions, interviews, code reviews, and Slack happen in English. You do not need Hindi or a regional language for most data and AI roles in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, or Pune.
That said, day-to-day life outside work gets easier with some Hindi. Vendors, landlords, and government offices often default to it. You will not lose a job offer over your Hindi, but you might lose your patience at a municipal counter.
Accent and speed can be a real filter in interviews. If English is not your first language, practise explaining a technical project out loud before your first screening call. Clear structure beats perfect grammar.
Local CV norms#
Indian CVs are more detailed than American ones. Recruiters expect to see your full degree names and universities, your years of experience per role, and often your date of birth or at least your total years of experience up front. Photographs still appear on many local CVs, though they are not required and can work against you at international firms.
Keep it to two pages for senior roles, one page if you have under five years of experience. List skills explicitly as a section, because applicant tracking systems scan for exact keyword matches. Include your visa status and notice period near the top, since that is the first thing a recruiter checks when they see a foreign name.
Here is a rewritten bullet that works in the Indian market.
Before: "Worked on analytics for the marketing team." After: "Built a marketing attribution model in Python and SQL that cut reporting time from 5 days to 6 hours, adopted by 4 regional teams across APAC."
Numbers, scope, and a clear stack. That is the format Indian recruiters respond to.
Which employers here are large international companies#
The snapshot shows a mix of global firms, Indian startups, and staffing agencies. Bosch Group had 11 open listings, Okta had 7, and V2 AI, Outreach, Coursera, Stripe, Google, Lokal App, Mongodb, and 2070Health had 3 or 4 each. Some of these names are recruiters or staffing firms rather than direct employers, so read the listing carefully.
Among the example roles, Okta, Ericsson, Outreach, Coursera, Godaddy, Stripe, Bosch Group, PayU, and Ubisoft are large international companies with established India operations. That does not mean they sponsor visas. Never assume sponsorship from a company name. Ask the recruiter directly, in the first call, before you both invest time.
The 1867 open listings across all categories in India, and the 1345 posted in the last 30 days, come from the JobRise hiring report for India. Use it to see where demand sits outside data and AI.
Applying from abroad#
Apply anyway. Indian data teams are used to hiring remotely and interviewing over video. The main friction is your notice period and relocation timeline, not your physical location at the time of application.
Time zones work in your favour if you are in Europe, the Middle East, or Southeast Asia. Bengaluru overlaps with most of those regions. If you are in the Americas, expect early morning or late evening calls.
Contract roles are rare in this slice: 157 of 158 listings are full-time. Do not plan on freelance or short-contract work as your entry route. And 1 of 158 listings looks entry-level, so this market is skewed toward experienced hires. If you are a fresher, your odds are much better after a few years of experience elsewhere.
Salary data is thin. Only 19 of 158 listings showed pay. As posted: "Data Analyst" at Clinton Health Access Initiative showed ₹3.0-4.0 LPA, Yulu Bikes showed ₹7.0-12.0 LPA, Millions Advisory showed ₹5.0-17.0 LPA, Trigent Software Private Limited showed ₹10.8-10.8 LPA for a Data Analyst L5, PayU showed ₹7.0-15.0 LPA, and Appitsimple infotek Pvt. Ltd. showed ₹1.0-3.0 LPA. These are ranges as listed, not market averages. Verify current figures before you negotiate.
Bengaluru dominates with 53 of the 158 listings, followed by Hyderabad at 9, Mumbai at 8, Gurugram at 8, and Pune at 6. If you want maximum optionality, base yourself in Bengaluru.
The 7-step plan#
- Check the current Employment Visa rules on the official Bureau of Immigration website and confirm the salary threshold with the Indian consulate in your country.
- Rewrite your CV in the Indian format: skills section, explicit years per role, visa status, and notice period near the top.
- Filter live openings in the data jobs hub for India and shortlist roles matching your exact stack and seniority.
- Write a short cover letter per application that names the role, your visa situation, and your earliest start date. The JobRise cover letter tool speeds this up if you are applying to many roles at once.
- Apply to at least 10 roles per week, mixing direct employers and staffing firms, since the latter move faster on screening.
- Prepare two 3-minute project stories you can tell out loud, with numbers, before your first screening call.
- When an offer appears, get the visa sponsorship question answered in writing before you resign anything.
What to expect in the interview loop#
Most Indian data and AI hiring runs three to four rounds: a recruiter screen, a technical round with SQL or Python tasks, a case or take-home, and a hiring manager conversation. Senior roles add a leadership round. Whole loops often take three to six weeks.
Take-home assignments are common. Budget real time for them. If a company asks for free work that looks like a real project, push back.
Notice periods in India are often 60 or 90 days for permanent roles. If you are already employed, say your notice period early. Recruiters plan around it.

FAQ#
Do I need a job offer before applying for an India work visa?
Yes, for the Employment Visa you need a signed offer or contract from an Indian entity. You cannot self-sponsor for salaried work. Check the exact document list with the Indian consulate in your country, since it varies by nationality.
Can I convert a tourist visa to a work visa while in India?
Generally no. The Employment Visa is normally applied for and stamped outside India, in your country of residence or nationality. Plan your entry on the correct visa from the start.
Which city should I move to for data and AI work?
Bengaluru, by a wide margin. In the 14 October 2026 snapshot it had 53 of 158 data and AI listings, against 9 in Hyderabad and 8 each in Mumbai and Gurugram. Pune had 6.
Will a foreign-sounding name hurt my application?
It can slow the first recruiter response, since visa questions come up immediately. State your visa status and notice period in the first line of your CV to remove that friction.
Are salaries in India negotiable for foreign hires?
Often yes, especially for niche skills in ML infrastructure, applied science, or agentic AI. Use the posted ranges as anchors, verify current market figures, and get the final offer in writing before you relocate.
