How to Get a Data & AI Job in the UK as a Foreigner

JobRise Team8 min read

You want a Data & AI job in the UK, but you are applying from another country and the visa rules look like a maze. Here is what the current listings actually show, which routes usually apply, and what to do in what order.

What the market looks like right now#

As a snapshot dated 14 October 2026, the JobRise data jobs hub for the United Kingdom lists 188 open Data & AI roles, with 156 posted in the last 30 days and 87 in the last 7 days. That is a live count of open listings, not a market survey, so treat it as a signal of activity rather than a total.

Across all categories the country has 2,742 open listings, and the JobRise Hiring Report for the United Kingdom shows 2,245 of those posted in the last 30 days. Data & AI is a slice of that, and it moves fast.

Who is hiring, and what that means for you#

Companies with the most open Data & AI listings in this snapshot are Anthropic (13), Intercom (13), Ellison Institute of Technology (7), Spotify (7), Zopa (5), Qureight Ltd (4), interactive investor (4), VANRATH (4), Cohere (4), and INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL Limited (3). Some of these are recruiters or staffing firms rather than end employers, so read each listing carefully.

Of those names, Anthropic, Intercom, Spotify, and Cohere are large international companies with operations well beyond the UK. That tells you the interview bar and process may be global in style. It tells you nothing about sponsorship. Never assume a named employer will sponsor a visa because it is big. Check the listing wording and ask directly.

Job types skew heavily employed: Full-time (185) and Contract (3). Contract roles are rare here, and most are a poor bet for a visa route tied to a specific sponsor.

Visa routes that usually apply#

For a full-time role with a sponsoring employer, the route people use is the Skilled Worker visa. It needs a job offer from a licensed sponsor, a role at the required skill level, and a salary at or above the going threshold. The exact salary thresholds, the shortage or immigration salary list status, and the sponsor licence register all change, so verify the current figures on the official GOV.UK pages before you plan around them.

Other routes exist. The Global Talent visa suits people with a strong record in digital technology and does not need a sponsor, but the endorsement bar is real and the application is evidence-heavy. The High Potential Individual route is for recent graduates of specific named universities, and the eligible list changes yearly. The Graduate route only helps if you have already studied in the UK.

Blunt reality check: the visa is the employer's paperwork burden as much as yours. Small firms often say no to sponsorship because of cost and admin, not because of your ability.

Language expectations, stated honestly#

Every role in this snapshot is in English, and the job titles, salary bands, and listing text are all written in English. You do not need perfect English. You do need to write a CV that reads like a native professional wrote it, and to hold your own in a technical interview where the conversation runs in English.

If your written English has small errors, get one native speaker to proofread your CV and cover letter. This is not vanity. Recruiters skim fast, and grammar slips raise doubts about communication in a data role where you will write reports.

UK CV norms for data roles#

UK CVs are different from US or Asian formats. Keep it to two pages. Do not add a photo, your date of birth, marital status, or nationality in the header. Put your right-to-work status and visa situation in one short line near the top, for example: "Eligible for Skilled Worker sponsorship" or "Currently in the UK on a valid visa".

Lead with a two-line summary, then skills, then experience in reverse order. Use plain reverse-chronological structure. Recruiters here expect dates in month/year format.

Numbers beat adjectives. Compare:

Before: "Responsible for data pipelines and improving reporting processes for the analytics team."

After: "Built and maintained 12 Airflow pipelines feeding the daily revenue dashboard, cutting report delivery from 2 days to 3 hours."

The second one survives a 10-second scan. Do this for every bullet.

Salaries in the current listings#

Only 71 of 188 listings show pay, so most employers are hiding the number until late in the process. Where pay is shown in this snapshot, the Data Analyst titles vary widely: Likewize lists £42K, INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL Limited lists £75K, Just Eat Takeaway.com lists £44K for a Senior Data Analyst role, Anson Mccade lists £111K, Hays lists £42K for a combined Data Analyst/BA/Data Governance role, and Platinum Recruitment lists £38K.

Read that spread carefully. Same title, £38K to £111K. The number depends on seniority, sector, and whether the listing is a recruiter advertising a rate. Use these as a reference range, not a promise, and confirm the salary on the official listing or with the employer before you plan your budget.

Applying from abroad#

You can apply from outside the UK. Expect a longer timeline, video interviews across time zones, and more upfront screening. Apply in batches. Track everything in a spreadsheet.

For each application, tailor the CV to the listing's exact tool names and domain words. Then write a short cover letter explaining your visa position in one sentence and your relevant project in two. The cover letter builder on JobRise helps you get that structure right without starting from a blank page.

Remote work exists, but this snapshot shows Full-time (185) and Contract (3) as the only job types recorded. Treat "remote" as something to confirm per listing. Fully remote roles from a UK employer to someone outside the UK raise tax and legal questions for the employer, so many will not offer it.

The 7-step plan#

  • Pick one lane: data analyst, data engineer, ML engineer, or data scientist. Do not apply to all four at once.
  • Fix the CV to UK norms: two pages, no photo, one line on visa status, quantified bullets.
  • Build a portfolio of two projects with real code, a short README, and a demo link. GitHub is fine.
  • Check the official GOV.UK pages for Skilled Worker, Global Talent, and HPI thresholds before you negotiate anything.
  • Apply to 5 to 10 roles a week using the data jobs hub for the United Kingdom to find fresh listings, prioritising ones posted in the last 7 days.
  • Prepare one story each for: a pipeline you built, a model you shipped, a stakeholder you convinced, and a failure you fixed. Use the STAR format.
  • Follow up 5 to 7 days after applying with one short email. Ask about timeline and sponsorship directly.

Where the roles sit#

London dominates with 85 listings in this snapshot. Oxford (7), Dublin (7), Leeds (5), and Belfast (5) follow. Note Dublin is in Ireland, not the UK, so a role there has a different visa system entirely. Filter carefully.

Entry-level openings are thin. Only 1 of 188 listings looks like a graduate, intern, junior, or trainee role: "Graduate Machine Learning Researcher" at Longshot Systems Ltd. If you are early career, expect more rejections and widen your search to adjacent titles like Data Analyst or Analytics Engineer.

Example open roles to study#

The snapshot lists roles such as "Data Scientist - GenAI - Consultant" at Infosys Consulting - Europe, "Senior Director, Analytics & Business Intelligence" at Nuvei, "Interim Lead AI Engineer" at Ki, "Senior Data Engineer" at Zoopla, "Data Engineering Manager" at Zoopla, "Data Analyst" at Test Triangle, and "Data Centre Design Engineer" at Fuse Energy. Read a handful of full listings to learn what skills each title expects before you write your CV.

FAQ#

Do UK employers sponsor visas for data roles?

Some do and some do not. Ask early, in the first screening call, and never assume based on company size.

How long does a Skilled Worker visa take?

Timelines vary and change often. Check the current processing times on the official GOV.UK site before you plan a move date.

Should I put my visa status on my CV?

Yes, one line near the top. It saves everyone time and avoids wasting interviews.

Are the salaries on JobRise guaranteed?

No. They are figures as posted on listings on 14 October 2026, and only 71 of 188 listings showed pay. Confirm with the employer.

Is remote work an option for these roles?

The snapshot records Full-time (185) and Contract (3) as job types. Remote status is not shown, so confirm per listing.
