How to Get a Finance Job in India as a Foreigner

JobRise Team9 min read

You want a finance role in India, but you are not Indian, and the whole hiring process feels like a locked room. Companies here do hire foreign finance professionals. That's real. But it usually happens at mid-to-senior level, and the paperwork sits with the employer, not with you.

Below is what the market looked like recently, which visa routes actually apply, and a plan you can follow without wasting six months.

What the finance job market in India looks like right now#

On 14 October 2026, the Finance jobs in India feed on JobRise showed 82 open listings. Of those, 47 were posted in the last 30 days, and 32 landed in the last 7 days alone, so the slice is active and roughly a third of it is fresh.

Read these as a dated snapshot of one job board. Not a market survey. They tell you where to look, and they do not tell you how big the whole market is.

Cities matter here. Bengaluru leads with 35 listings, then Gurugram at 10, Mumbai at 7, Chennai at 5, and Pune at 4. Almost everything is full-time: 80 listings, against 2 contract roles. Your visa paperwork and your office will be tied to a location, so pick the city before you pick the company.

Which employers are large international companies#

The companies with the most open finance listings on that date were Rentokil Initial (16), Stripe (10), Bosch Group (7), Fivetran (7), Mongodb (7), Launchdarkly (5), Steer (3), Civica (2), Groww (2), and Elastic (2).

Rentokil Initial, Stripe, Bosch Group, Fivetran, Mongodb, Launchdarkly, Civica, and Elastic are large international companies with operations well beyond India, while Steer and Groww read as more India-rooted in their profile. Some names on job boards are recruiters or staffing firms rather than the final employer, so read the listing twice before you get attached.

One blunt reality check. None of this means any of them will sponsor you. Never assume a specific company sponsors visas. Ask directly, early, and get the answer in writing.

Visa and work permit routes that usually apply#

India does not run a simple job seeker visa. You need an employer to sponsor you before you can work, and the offer comes first every single time.

The main routes, based on recent official guidance:

  • Employment Visa (E-Visa). The standard route for a foreign national taking up a job with an Indian entity. It is employer-specific and tied to a named role. There has historically been a salary threshold for most categories, with exceptions for certain roles like language teachers, ethnic cooks, and translators, but the exact figure and the eligible categories change. Do not plan around a number you read on a blog. Check the current official Bureau of Immigration or Indian embassy source.
  • Business Visa. For short business visits, meetings, and exploring opportunities. It does not let you take up employment or draw a salary in India. Do not try to work on one.
  • Intra-company transfer. If you already work for a multinational, moving to their India entity is often the smoothest path. Same group, existing track record, and the company handles the paperwork.
  • OCI card. If you hold Overseas Citizen of India status, you can live and work in India without a separate work permit. Different situation entirely.

Processing times and document lists vary by nationality and consulate. Treat every number you read online as provisional until the official source confirms it.

Language expectations, stated honestly#

English is the working language of finance in India, especially in multinational and large Indian firms. Job descriptions, meetings, reporting, and most written communication happen in English. Strong English and solid finance vocabulary will carry you.

Hindi helps in daily life, in smaller cities, and in plant or factory roles where you deal with local teams on the floor. For a Bengaluru or Gurugram corporate finance role it is a bonus, not a requirement. Regional languages matter more for on-the-ground roles in specific states.

No employer expects an Indian language for a global finance position. They expect clear English on a call.

Local CV norms for finance roles#

Indian finance CVs run longer than US or UK ones. Two pages is normal, sometimes three for senior roles. A photo is common but not required. Date of birth and marital status appear on many local CVs, though for a foreign applicant including them is optional and you can skip them.

What matters more:

  • Put your name, phone number with country code, email, and current city at the top.
  • Include a short professional summary, 3 to 4 lines, stating your finance domain and years of experience.
  • List work experience in reverse order with company, title, dates, and bullets showing scope and results.
  • Name your qualifications with the awarding body, like ACCA, CPA, CIMA, CA (ICAI), CFA, or an MBA with the university.
  • Mention your work authorization status plainly, for example "Eligible for Employment Visa sponsorship" or "OCI cardholder".
  • Skip the "references available on request" line. It wastes space.

Rewrite bullets to show ownership and numbers. Here is a before and after.

Before: "Responsible for accounts receivable activities."

After: "Owned the accounts receivable ledger for three entities, reduced overdue balances by 22% over two quarters, and ran the monthly close with a four-day turnaround."

The second version gets you the interview. The first gets you skipped.

Applying from abroad#

You can apply from outside India, and plenty of people do. Expect a longer timeline, because the visa step only starts after an offer lands, and some employers will interview you remotely before making anything conditional on work authorization.

On remote work: in this snapshot the 82 listings are 80 full-time and 2 contract, and every role listed is tied to Indian cities and offices. Treat this as an on-site or hybrid market for finance. Fully remote finance roles for overseas candidates are not visible in this data.

The country context is wider than finance alone. The JobRise Hiring Report: India showed 1,867 open listings across all categories in India on the same date, with 1,345 posted in the last 30 days. Finance is a thin slice of that, so cast your net wider if your profile allows it.

Your 7-step plan#

  1. Fix your target. Pick one finance domain, such as controllership, FP&A, treasury, payroll, or financial operations, and one city. Bengaluru and Gurugram together hold 45 of the 82 finance listings on this snapshot.

  2. Sort out your visa story first. Decide which route applies to you: Employment Visa, intra-company transfer, or OCI. Write one line about it for your cover letter and for recruiters.

  3. Rebuild your CV to local norms. Two pages, clear headings, quantified bullets, named qualifications, and your work authorization stated up front.

  4. Target the employers with the deepest benches in this slice. Rentokil Initial, Stripe, Bosch Group, Fivetran, Mongodb, and Launchdarkly had the most open finance listings on 14 October 2026. Apply to more than one role at the same company when they fit.

  5. Write a short, specific cover letter per role. Use the free cover letter generator to get a first draft, then rewrite it in your own words and name the role and the team. Keep it under one page.

  6. Apply in batches and track everything. A small number of quality applications each week beats a flood. Record company, role, date, contact, and next step in a spreadsheet.

  7. Prepare for the interview in two parts. Rehearse your close process, your systems, and your numbers for the technical side, and have a clean answer on timing, visa route, and why India for the relocation side.

What to say when they ask about relocation#

Hiring managers worry about two things: can you legally work here, and will you actually show up. Answer both early. Don't make them drag it out of you.

A script that works: "I am targeting a move to Bengaluru and I am ready to relocate on my own timeline. For work authorization I would need Employment Visa sponsorship, and I understand the employer files the application. I have looked into the process and I am prepared to move quickly once an offer is in place. Can you tell me whether this role is open to sponsoring?"

Short, honest, and it invites them to give you a real answer.

FAQ#

Do I need a job offer before I can apply for a visa?

Yes, for the Employment Visa route. The employer files the paperwork, so the offer comes first and the visa application follows. Business visas do not allow employment.

Will large international companies in India sponsor a visa for finance roles?

Some will, some will not, and it depends on the role and the seniority. Never assume sponsorship from a company name alone. Ask the recruiter directly and get a written answer.

Is English enough to work in finance in India?

For corporate finance roles in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Gurugram, Pune, and Chennai, yes. Hindi helps in daily life and in plant or field roles. Global teams work in English.

Can I work remotely for an Indian finance company from abroad?

Not in the roles visible in this snapshot. The 82 listings were 80 full-time and 2 contract, and they are tied to Indian offices. Plan for on-site or hybrid work.

How long does the hiring and visa process usually take?

Interview processes often run 3 to 8 weeks, and visa processing adds more time after the offer, varying by nationality and consulate. Check current official timelines with the Indian embassy or the Bureau of Immigration before you commit to dates.
