How to Get a Finance Job in the UK as a Foreigner

JobRise Team8 min read

You want a finance job in the UK and you do not live here yet. That is doable, but the paperwork and the hiring habits matter more than most people expect.

Here is what the market looked like on 14 October 2026. The finance jobs hub on JobRise listed 135 open finance roles in the United Kingdom on that date, 102 of them posted in the last 30 days and 76 in the last 7 days. That is a snapshot of our live listings, not a market survey, so treat it as a rough signal of where to look rather than a promise.

The visa routes that usually apply#

Most finance hires from abroad come through the Skilled Worker route. You need a job offer from a licensed sponsor, the role has to meet a skill and salary threshold, and your English has to be at the required level. The exact salary thresholds change, and some roles have different going rates, so check the current requirements on the official gov.uk pages before you plan anything around a number you read elsewhere.

The Global Talent route is a different animal. It is for recognised leaders or potential leaders in certain fields, including digital technology and some research areas, and it does not need a sponsor. Very few people qualify, and the endorsement process is slow.

Graduate schemes are the friendliest entry point. If you are finishing a UK degree, the Graduate route lets you work for a period after your studies without a sponsor. If you are finishing a degree elsewhere, some firms will sponsor you directly onto their graduate programme, but many will not. Read the listing text closely.

A blunt reality check: a visa is not a job. Firms sponsor people they cannot hire locally. If your skills are common in the UK market, sponsorship becomes a harder argument.

Language expectations#

Finance work in the UK runs on written English. Reports, board packs, audit notes, client emails. Conversational fluency will not carry you through a technical accounting interview.

You do not need a British accent. You do need to write clearly and to follow a structured interview without long pauses. IELTS or a similar test is often part of the visa process anyway, so if you already have a strong band score, say so on your CV.

Local CV norms#

UK finance CVs are shorter and drier than what many candidates write. Two pages maximum, one page if you have under five years of experience. No photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no national ID number. Those details invite bias and they are not expected here.

Put your qualifications near the top: ACCA, CIMA, ACA, CFA, or a relevant degree, with the year you qualified or expect to. Employers screen on those hard signals first.

Here is a before and after on a typical bullet:

Before: "Responsible for the monthly management accounts and various ad hoc finance tasks."

After: "Owned monthly management accounts for a £40m revenue division, cut close from 12 working days to 6, and presented variances to the FD each month."

The rewrite gives a number, a scope, and a visible output. Do that for every role.

Which listed employers are large international companies#

Some of the biggest names in the snapshot are global firms. Nomura is a Japanese investment bank. Man Group is a large listed asset manager. Palantir is a US software group. Stripe is a US payments company. Porsche Cars GB Ltd is the UK arm of a German carmaker. Red Bull and AG Barr are drinks groups. These are the kind of names where international hiring is normal, but I am not claiming any of them sponsors visas. Check the official register of licensed sponsors and read each listing.

The snapshot also shows plenty of UK-focused firms: Barnett Waddingham had 11 open listings, Zopa 6, Lane Clark & Peacock 5, Kroo Bank Ltd 3, Moneyfarm 2. Some names in the data are recruiters or staffing firms, so a listing from them may lead to more than one end employer.

Applying from abroad#

You can apply from anywhere, but your application has to answer one question before anything else: when can you legally start work in the UK? Put a short line at the top of your CV, for example: "Eligible to work in the UK from [month] under the Skilled Worker route, subject to sponsorship." Vague answers get filtered out early.

Time zones matter more than people expect. Say you are flexible for interviews in UK hours. If you are eight hours ahead, propose specific slots in London time rather than asking them to work around you.

Expect more silence from abroad. Local candidates can be interviewed within days. Overseas candidates often sit in a longer queue while the firm checks sponsorship policy. Follow up once after two weeks, then move on.

Remote options#

Almost none. On 14 October 2026 the data showed 129 full-time listings, 4 contract and 2 part-time. Full-time finance roles in the UK are overwhelmingly office-based, usually in London, which held 70 of the 135 listings. Manchester and Birmingham had 5 each, Leeds 4, Cheltenham 4. If you need remote work, you are competing for a very small slice.

Your 7-step plan#

  • Pick your lane. The snapshot showed roles from "Senior Technical Accountant" at Zopa to "Compliance Manager" at Reeve to "Wealth Manager" at Moneyfarm. Pick one lane and write your CV for it.
  • Check the official gov.uk pages for the Skilled Worker route and confirm current salary thresholds and English requirements before you apply anywhere.
  • Rewrite your CV in UK format: two pages, no photo, qualifications up top, quantified bullets.
  • Build a shortlist from the live finance listings and note which names are large international firms versus UK-focused ones or recruiters.
  • Write a cover letter per application. Use a cover letter tool to keep it tight and specific to the role rather than reusing one generic letter.
  • Prepare for a competency interview. UK finance interviews ask for STAR examples: a situation, your task, your action, the result. Have five stories ready.
  • Track everything. Company, role, date applied, follow-up date, visa status. Treat it like a pipeline, because it is one.

Entry-level routes#

If you are early in your career, graduate schemes are the realistic route. The snapshot on 14 October 2026 showed 8 of 135 listings with entry-level titles, including "Finance Graduate" at AG Barr, "Accounting Graduate - 18 Month Program" at Red Bull, "Graduate Associate, Tax" at Interpath Advisory, and three "2027 Graduate - Investment Analyst" roles at Barnett Waddingham in Liverpool, Birmingham and Cheltenham.

Only 1 of 135 listings showed a salary figure: "Senior Credit Underwriter | UK" at Ramp, posted at £74K to £100K with equity. Most UK finance listings do not publish pay, so you will be guessing until the offer stage. Ask early in the process what the range is.

Graduate scheme deadlines usually run from September to January for a start the following autumn. If you miss that window, look for junior roles like "FP&A Analyst" at Lanes Group or "Management Accountant" at Lovey, which hire year-round.

Country context#

Across all categories, the UK had 2,742 open listings on 14 October 2026, with 2,245 posted in the last 30 days. Finance is a decent slice of that but not the biggest. The hiring report shows the same country numbers if you want the wider picture beyond finance.

FAQ#

Do I need a job offer before I apply for a visa?

For the Skilled Worker route, yes. You need a licensed sponsor to issue a certificate of sponsorship before you can apply. The Global Talent route is the main exception, and it needs an endorsement rather than a job offer.

Can I switch to a finance job while already in the UK on another visa?

Often yes, if your current visa allows you to work and the new employer is a licensed sponsor. Rules vary by visa type, so check the official gov.uk guidance for your specific situation before handing in notice.

Will UK employers interview me in my time zone?

Some will, especially larger firms running global graduate programmes. Many will not. Propose interview slots in UK hours and say you are flexible. Being easy to schedule helps.

Should I mention my visa status on my CV?

Yes, one short line near the top. Something like "Requires Skilled Worker sponsorship" or "Eligible to work in the UK from March 2027." Silence on the question reads as a risk to the hiring manager.

How long does the whole process take?

Realistically three to six months from first application to start date, sometimes longer if sponsorship approval is slow. Visa processing times vary and change, so build buffer into your plans and check the current official timelines.
