How to Get a Sales Job in India as a Foreigner

JobRise Team8 min read

You want a sales job in India, you are not Indian, and every second job post quietly assumes you already have a PAN card, a local mobile number, and the right to work. That gap is the real problem. Not the interview. Not the CV format. The paperwork and the employer's willingness to deal with it.

Here is what the market actually looks like, and how to work it.

What the sales market looks like right now#

On 14 October 2026, the JobRise live jobs feed showed 234 open sales listings in India on the jobs hub. Of those, 73 were posted in the last 30 days and 36 in the last 7 days, so the slice is moving but not exploding.

All 234 are full-time. Not one shows a salary. That is normal for Indian sales hiring: pay is usually discussed after the first screen, and variable pay (commission, incentives) is a big part of the package.

For country context, the JobRise Hiring Report for India shows 1,867 open listings across all categories, with 1,345 posted in the last 30 days. Sales is a real slice of that, not a rounding error.

The visa question, straight#

There is no "sales visa" for India. The route that usually applies is the Employment Visa, sponsored by the employer who hires you. In practice, the employer applies on your behalf and you get the visa stamped before you travel.

Common thresholds people talk about for an Employment Visa: a minimum annual salary (figures quoted vary, and the official rules change), a graduation-level degree or proven professional experience, and the employer showing that no suitable Indian candidate was available for the role. Treat all of that as direction only. Check the current rules on the official Indian government immigration and visa website before you plan anything, because the thresholds and paperwork get updated and differ slightly by nationality.

Some other routes exist. Business Visa covers short visits for meetings, not for taking a salaried job. Project Visa applies to specific project work in India. OCI and PIO holders have different rights and should check their own status rules. Do not let a recruiter tell you "we will sort the visa later" without something in writing.

Language expectations, honestly#

English is the working language for most B2B and enterprise sales roles in India. The job titles in this slice are all in English, and companies like Datadog, Mongodb, Okta, and Elastic run global sales teams where English is the default.

Field sales and retail-facing roles are different. If you are selling to shop owners in Siliguri or Thrissur, the customer conversation happens in Bengali, Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, or Marathi, depending on the region. Look at the entry-level listings from Rentokil Initial: "Field Sales Executive | Thrissur | Any Graduate" and "Field Sales Executive | Sriperumbadur | Any Graduate" are local-market roles. A recruiter will ask what Indian languages you speak, and "none yet" is a real limitation for those jobs.

Honest positioning: strong English plus willingness to learn Hindi or the regional language of your city is a workable story for inside sales and account management. It is not enough for a field territory job on day one.

Local CV norms that differ from Europe or the US#

Indian sales CVs are more personal than Western ones. Recruiters expect certain things that would look odd on a Berlin or Chicago resume.

  • A professional photo at the top is common and often expected.
  • Date of birth or age, marital status, and sometimes nationality appear on CVs. This is standard local practice, not required by law, so you can leave it off if you prefer.
  • Passport number and full address are sometimes requested. Do not put your passport number on a public CV.
  • One to two pages is the norm, even for senior people.
  • Put your visa status and notice period near the top. Recruiters screen on this first.
  • List your degrees with the university name and year. Indian recruiters check this.
  • Include a local mobile number if you have one. If not, say in your summary that you are relocating.

The format matters less than the visa line. A recruiter spends about ten seconds on the first pass, and the question in their head is "can I legally hire this person and how much will it cost me in admin time."

Which employers in this slice are large international companies#

Several names in the top employers list are global groups, which usually means established HR processes and experience with cross-border hires. Rentokil Initial (145 listings), Red Bull (10), Bosch Group (10), Datadog (9), Mongodb (9), Okta (5), and Elastic (3) all operate internationally. Apna (7), Lokal App (2), and Stranger Soccer (7) are India-based or India-focused.

That is not a promise. I cannot tell you which of these companies sponsors visas for any specific role. What I can say is that a large global company is more likely to have handled an Employment Visa application before, and more likely to say a clear yes or no quickly. Ask directly in the first call.

The example open roles show the range: "Area On Premise Manager" and "Territory Sales Manager" at Red Bull, "Portfolio & Sales Interface - Deputy Manager" at Bosch Group, "Enterprise Customer Success Manager" at Datadog, "Account Executive" at WATI.io, and "Director - Inside Sales & Business Development" at ProArch. Senior individual contributor and manager roles dominate. Entry-level is thin: only 5 of 234 listings look like intern, graduate, junior, or trainee roles, and all 5 are Rentokil Initial field positions such as "Jr. Product Sales Executive - North Kolkata".

Applying from abroad#

Apply anyway. Indian hiring moves fast once a manager decides, and a video first round is standard. Expect the process to run three to six weeks from first call to offer for a mid-level role, longer for senior ones.

Two practical things. First, get your documents ready early: degree certificate, experience letters from past employers, and a passport with enough validity. The employer will ask for these for the visa file. Second, be explicit in your cover letter about your situation. Do not bury it. If you need a visa, say so and say you have started the paperwork conversation.

The cover letter builder on JobRise helps you write a short, specific letter that puts your visa status and your sales numbers up front. Use it rather than sending a generic one.

Remote and hybrid options#

All 234 listings in this slice are full-time, and the titles point to in-person work: territory managers, field executives, on-premise managers. Bengaluru (47 listings), Mumbai (14), Gurugram (12), Kolkata (12), and Pune (10) are the top cities. That is where you need to be.

Inside sales and enterprise account roles, like the Datadog and Mongodb listings, are more likely to allow hybrid working once you are hired. Fully remote sales roles for India, where you sit in another country and sell into India, are not showing up in this data. Do not plan around that.

A 7-step plan#

  1. Decide your target city and role type. Bengaluru has the most listings, but field sales roles are spread across smaller cities too.

  2. Check your visa route on the official government source. Write down the exact document list and the salary threshold that applies to your nationality.

  3. Rewrite your CV in the local format. Photo, visa status, notice period, degree details, one to two pages.

  4. Filter the live sales listings in India and shortlist 15 to 20 roles where your industry experience matches. Prioritise large international groups for visa feasibility.

  5. Write a specific cover letter for each. Use the cover letter tool and mention your visa situation in the first paragraph.

  6. Apply in batches of five per week and track responses. Follow up once after seven days.

  7. Prepare for the salary conversation. Ask the recruiter for the fixed and variable split, and check current official sources for salary norms in that city and role level before you quote a number.

FAQ#

Do I need a job offer before I can apply for a visa to work in India?

Yes, for the Employment Visa route the employer sponsors the application. You cannot apply for a work permit on your own without an employer backing it.

Will Indian companies hire a sales person who does not speak Hindi?

For enterprise and inside sales roles that run in English, yes, it happens. For field and retail sales in most regions, no. The regional language of the territory matters more than Hindi in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

How long does the Employment Visa process usually take?

It varies by nationality and by how prepared the employer's file is. Plan for several weeks and confirm the current timeline with the official government source rather than a recruiter's estimate.

Should I mention that I need visa sponsorship in my application?

Yes. Say it clearly in the first paragraph of your cover letter. It filters out employers who cannot sponsor you and saves everyone time.

Are entry-level sales roles in India open to foreigners?

Almost never in this snapshot. Only 5 of 234 listings look entry-level, and all 5 are field roles where local language and local market knowledge are required. Target mid-level or senior roles where your experience is the reason to hire you.
