How to Get an HR Job in India as a Foreigner

JobRise Team7 min read

Your job search stalls because India's HR market looks closed to foreigners, and you don't know which rules actually apply to you. Let's fix that. As of 14 October 2026, JobRise's live feed shows 29 open HR jobs in India, 20 posted in the last 30 days, 19 in the last 7 days. That's a thin slice, so treat it as a snapshot of one board, not the whole market.

The visa and work permit routes#

India doesn't hand out work visas casually, and HR is not on any special shortage list I can point you to. The main route is the Employment Visa, which the Indian government issues for a skilled role where an Indian company has hired you directly. There's also the Business Visa for short business visits, but that's not for taking a job, and the e-Business Visa has strict day limits and no employment allowed.

The Employment Visa has a salary threshold set by the Ministry of Home Affairs, and it changes with notifications. Don't take my word on the current figure. Check the official Indian visa portal or the Indian embassy in your country before you apply anywhere.

Some companies also use the Employment Visa (Project) route for specific projects, or intra-company transfers if you already work for a multinational and it moves you to an India office. If you're on a spouse or dependent visa tied to someone else's employment, your ability to work depends on that visa's specific conditions, and the FRRO is the office that answers this.

No listing in the current JobRise slice mentions visa sponsorship or relocation support. That's normal. Companies rarely write it in the job ad even when they'll consider it.

Language expectations, stated plainly#

English is the working language for almost every HR role in India's corporate sector. You'll write policies, run interviews, and join calls in English daily. If your English is strong, you're fine in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Gurugram, and most multinational offices.

Local languages help, especially Hindi in Delhi NCR and Mumbai. You don't need Hindi to land an HR job at a global company, but you'll miss informal office chatter and it slows you down in factory or plant HR roles where the workforce speaks Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, or Gujarati. If you speak one of these already, say so on your CV.

What an Indian HR CV looks like#

Indian recruiters expect a photo on the CV more often than in Europe or the US. It's not required, but a clean headshot is common and won't hurt you. Include your visa status and current city near the top, because the recruiter skims for 6 seconds and wants to know if you can legally work here.

One page is fine early in your career. Two pages once you've got 8-10 years behind you. Put your education, then your work experience in reverse order, and add your notice period. Notice period matters a lot here: 30 days is normal, 90 days is common at large IT firms, and "immediate joiner" is a real advantage.

Here's a rewritten bullet that works in India:

Before: "Responsible for recruitment and onboarding at the company." After: "Hired 42 engineers and 6 HR staff in 14 months across Bengaluru and Pune, cut average time-to-hire from 58 to 31 days by rewriting the interview scorecard."

Numbers convince. Adjectives don't.

Which employers are large internationals#

Looking at the 29 open listings, Mongodb has 6, Datamark, Inc. has 6, Rentokil Initial has 4, Stripe has 3, Bosch Group has 2, and TORQCOMMODITIES, Okta, Laundryheap, Envalior, and Side each have 1. Mongodb, Stripe, Okta, Bosch Group, Rentokil Initial, and Envalior are large international companies with global HR functions. Datamark, Inc. and Side read more like staffing or recruiting operations, and TORQCOMMODITIES and Laundryheap are smaller or scaling.

I can't tell you which of these will sponsor a visa. Ask in the first screening call, directly.

Some of these listings are recruiters or staffing firms posting on behalf of clients, which means the job ad names one company but you'd work for another. Clarify that early.

Applying from abroad#

You'll face one hard question: why should a company wait for you to relocate when a local candidate can start in 30 days? Your answer has to be specific. Maybe you bring HRIS migration experience, or GDPR-grade data privacy knowledge, or you've run shared services for a region they're expanding into.

Bengaluru has 8 of the 29 open listings, Gurugram has 6, Mumbai has 4, Thane has 2, and Navi Mumbai has 1. All 29 are full-time. None of these listings shows a salary figure, so don't anchor your expectations to a number you saw in a blog post. For a full-time HR role at a multinational in Bengaluru or Gurugram, reported monthly ranges vary widely by seniority and employer, so check the current official sources and ask directly.

Remote work is not visible in this slice. Every listing here is full-time and tied to a city, so plan for an in-office move.

The 7-step plan#

  • Pick your target city first. Bengaluru and Gurugram together hold 14 of the 29 listings, so focus there.
  • Rewrite your CV in the Indian format: photo optional, visa status up top, notice period, numbers in every bullet.
  • Sort the 10 companies above into "international" and "local or staffing", and apply to the internationals first for HR roles that touch global operations.
  • Use the free cover letter generator to write a one-page letter that names the exact role and explains why you're worth the relocation risk.
  • Apply in batches of 5 per week, tracking company, role, date, and contact name in a spreadsheet.
  • Prepare a 60-second answer for "why India, why HR, why us" that sounds like a person, not a pitch deck. Rehearse it out loud.
  • Read the visa rules on the official government source before the first offer call, so you know what's actually possible and can ask sharp questions.

FAQ#

Do I need a job offer before applying for an Indian work visa?

Yes, for the Employment Visa route. The company applies on your behalf with an employment contract and supporting documents. Check the official Indian visa portal for the exact document list, since it changes.

Will Indian companies sponsor visas for HR roles?

Some will, mostly large multinationals moving existing staff or hiring for very specific skills. It's not common for standard HR openings. Ask directly in the first call instead of guessing from the job ad.

Is Hindi required for HR jobs in India?

No, English is enough for corporate HR at multinationals and most Indian tech or services firms. Hindi or a regional language helps in plant HR, factory HR, and roles with a lot of frontline employee contact.

Should I include a photo on my Indian CV?

Most Indian CVs have one, so include a clean professional headshot unless the company explicitly asks for a blind application. It's a convention here, not a rule.

Can I apply for HR jobs in India while living abroad?

Yes, but expect a longer timeline and more screening calls. Make relocation sound low-risk by confirming your visa route and notice period early, and target companies with global HR teams.
