How to Get an Internship in the UK as a Foreigner

JobRise Team9 min read

You want an internship in the UK, you are not a UK national, and you have no idea whether a visa is even possible. That is the right question to ask first, because the paperwork shapes which roles you can realistically target.

The good news is that the entry-level end of the market is busy right now. The bad news is that many internships are tied to a student or graduate status you may not have. Sort that out before you send a single application.

What the UK internship market looks like right now#

On 14 October 2026, the internship listings for the United Kingdom on JobRise showed 77 open listings. Of those, 59 were posted in the last 30 days, and 41 in the last 7 days. That is a live feed count, not a market survey, but it tells you roles are appearing weekly.

Read that snapshot carefully. Only 5 of the 77 listings carry "Internship" as the job type, while 70 are labelled "Full-time" and 2 are "Contract". In practice, plenty of roles that look like internships are advertised as fixed-term full-time jobs. Do not filter yourself out by searching only for the word "intern".

Entry-level titles dominate: 74 of the 77 listings are intern, graduate, junior, trainee, or similar. Examples on the feed include "HR Intern" and "IT Support Specialist Intern" at Bosch Group, and "Intern Software Developer - 12-month fixed-term contract" at Eurostar International.

Which employers are hiring, and which are big internationals#

By open listing count, the busiest names were Bosch Group (19), Barnett Waddingham (11), Rentokil Initial Group (10), Palantir (5), Man Group (4), Kepak Group (4), NowSkills (3), Old Mill (3), Eurostar International (2), and PIMCO (2). Some of these are recruiters or staffing firms, so a listing may not be the end employer.

Several are large international companies you would recognise: Bosch Group, Rentokil Initial Group, Palantir, Man Group, PIMCO, and Eurostar International. Barnett Waddingham, Old Mill, Kepak Group, NowSkills, and Allwyn UK read as more UK-focused or training-led employers.

Here is the honest part. A company being large and international says nothing about whether it will sponsor you. I cannot tell you that any of these employers sponsors visas, because a job listing does not prove that. You have to ask, or check the sponsor list yourself.

Cities are concentrated. London leads with 22 listings, then Denham (10), Coventry (6), Merthyr Tydfil (3), and Bristol (3). Denham's showing is largely Bosch Group's site presence. If you are applying from abroad, London is where you will find the most options and the most expensive rent.

The visa routes that usually apply#

There is no "internship visa" as such. Which route fits you depends on your current status, and thresholds change, so treat what follows as orientation and verify everything on the official gov.uk pages before you act.

Student route. If you are coming to the UK to study, your student visa usually permits term-time work with an hour cap and full-time work in vacations. Schemes such as the Turing Scheme can fund study or work placements abroad, including for some UK-bound placements, but eligibility is set scheme by scheme.

Graduate Route. If you finish a UK degree, the Graduate Route lets you work for a period afterwards without a sponsor. It is a common bridge from a UK internship into a permanent role, but it is not open to people who have never studied in the UK.

Skilled Worker visa. This needs a sponsoring employer and a role meeting the going salary and skill thresholds. Most true internships fall short, because they are short, low-paid, or below the required skill level. Some longer graduate programmes at large firms do qualify. Do not count on it for a three-month placement.

India Young Professionals Scheme. A ballot-based route for Indian graduates aged roughly 18 to 30, giving a period of work in the UK without a sponsor. Places are limited and the ballot opens at set times.

Youth Mobility Scheme. Available to nationals of certain countries within an age band, typically 18 to 30 or 35 depending on nationality. It gives time-limited work rights with no sponsor needed, which makes it the cleanest route for a short internship.

Global Business Mobility routes. Some cover intern-type transfers within a company group, for someone already employed abroad by the same employer. If your country's office has a UK arm, this is worth asking about.

Right to work checks are mandatory and happen before you start. Thresholds, eligible nationalities, and fees all move. Check the current rules on gov.uk, and check whether an employer is on the official register of licensed sponsors before you assume anything.

Language expectations, stated plainly#

You do not need perfect English. You do need enough to work in a team without constant translation, and internships are unforgiving because you learn by asking questions.

For HR, communications, and retail growth roles like those on the feed, you will be writing emails and talking to colleagues all day. Expect a comfortable B2 level as a floor, higher for anything client-facing. Technical roles such as "IT Support Specialist Intern" still need spoken English for tickets and handovers.

Nobody will ask for an IELTS score for an internship. They will judge you in the interview. If you stumble, slow down and answer simply. Clear and short beats fluent and vague.

UK CV norms you should follow#

One page, no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no nationality block unless you want to state your right to work. Those omissions are normal here and including them looks foreign for the wrong reasons.

Lead with a short profile, then education, then experience and projects. Use reverse chronological order. Put your right to work status in the profile in one line if it is clean, for example "Eligible to work in the UK under the Youth Mobility Scheme".

Quantify where you can. Here is a before and after for a student project.

Before: "Helped with data analysis for a university project."

After: "Cleaned and analysed a 12,000-row sales dataset in Excel and Python, and presented three demand findings to a team of four, which shaped the group's final pricing model."

The second one gives a recruiter something to ask about. That is the whole job of a CV bullet.

Applying from abroad, and remote work#

Applying from outside the UK is normal and it works, but expect a slower process and a video interview. Time zones are your problem, so offer specific slots in UK time and confirm them in writing.

Remote internships are rare in this data. The listings describe site-based work in places like Denham, Coventry, and Merthyr Tydfil. A 12-month fixed-term contract such as the Eurostar International software role means you need to be in the UK and cleared to work for the whole period.

Budget for the gap between offer and start date. Rent deposits in London run into thousands of pounds, and you will not be paid before your first payroll date.

A 7-step plan#

  • Check your route first. Confirm which visa or status you can actually get, on gov.uk, before you look at a single job description.
  • Build a target list from the current feed. Sort by city and by company size, and note which names are recruiters rather than end employers.
  • Rewrite your CV to UK norms. One page, no photo, quantified bullets, and one line on your right to work.
  • Write a short, specific cover letter for each role. Use the free cover letter generator to get a first draft, then rewrite it in your own words and name the actual role.
  • Apply to 10 to 15 roles a week, not 40 in one sitting. Track company, role, date, contact, and status in a spreadsheet.
  • Prepare two stories you can tell in five minutes each. One about a problem you solved, one about a mistake you learned from, both with numbers where you can find them.
  • Follow up once after seven days, then move on. Silence is common and it is rarely personal.

FAQ#

Do I need a visa sponsor for a UK internship?

Often yes, and many internships will not provide one. Short placements are rarely sponsored, so routes like the Youth Mobility Scheme or student status usually work better. Verify your options on gov.uk before applying.

Which of these employers are large international companies?

Bosch Group, Rentokil Initial Group, Palantir, Man Group, PIMCO, and Eurostar International are large international firms based on their public profile. That does not mean any of them will sponsor you, and I cannot claim that from a job listing.

How many internship listings are open in the UK right now?

On 14 October 2026, JobRise showed 77 open internship listings in the United Kingdom, with 59 posted in the last 30 days. Across all categories in the UK there were 2,742 open listings, and the JobRise Hiring Report for the UK puts 2,245 of those in the last 30 days.

Are internships in the UK paid?

Mostly yes if they are real work, but many listings show no pay figure at all. Only 3 of the 77 listings showed a salary, and the posted figures were £16K-16K for a "Data Analyst Apprentice" and £16K-16K for a "Marketing Apprentice", both at NowSkills. Always confirm pay and hours in writing.

Can I do a UK internship remotely from my own country?

Rarely, and this data does not show remote roles. The listings point to site-based work in London, Denham, Coventry, Merthyr Tydfil, and Bristol, so plan to be in the UK. Remote work also raises tax and right-to-work questions that most employers avoid.
