How to Get an Operations Job in the UK as a Foreigner

JobRise Team8 min read

You want an operations job in the United Kingdom, you are not a UK citizen, and you do not know which employers will even read your application. That is the real barrier: not skills, but permission to work and a CV that passes a recruiter's ten-second scan. This walks through both, using live vacancy data from 14 October 2026.

What the UK operations market looked like on 14 October 2026#

On the JobRise operations jobs hub there were 589 open operations listings in the United Kingdom on that date. 536 were posted in the last 30 days, and 417 in the last 7 days alone. That is a fast-moving slice, not a market survey.

Two things stand out. Full-time roles dominate: 552 of the 589, against 26 part-time and 11 contract. And most of the volume sits in a handful of employers: Biffa Waste Services (82 listings), Rentokil Initial Group (42), Lanes Group (30), Together Housing (22), Ten Group (15), Marshalls PLC (14), Albert Bartlett (13), Sword Group (12), Kurt Geiger (11), ATA LTD (11).

Geography matters more than usual here. London leads with 101 listings, then Manchester (17), Aberdeen (14), Airdrie (12), Bristol (11). Outside the big cities the numbers thin out fast, so be realistic about where you can actually get interviews.

Which of these employers are large international companies#

Some names on that list are large, well-known international groups with operations well beyond the UK. Rentokil Initial Group, Bosch Group, ABM UK, Debenhams Group and Marshalls PLC all appear in the data and are recognisable international or large national organisations. Biffa Waste Services, Lanes Group, Together Housing and Albert Bartlett read as large UK-focused operators. ATA LTD and Sword Group appear in the listings too; Sword Group in particular is a name with an international profile.

None of that tells you who sponsors visas. I will not claim any of these companies sponsors a Certificate of Sponsorship, because a job listing never shows that. Large international employers are more likely to have the HR machinery for it. That is a tendency, not a promise.

The visa routes that usually apply#

For a salaried operations role, the Skilled Worker visa is the usual route. Your employer must hold a sponsor licence and issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship. The job has to meet a skill level and a salary threshold set by the government, and both change. Check the current thresholds on GOV.UK before you plan around a number someone quoted you two years ago.

Other routes exist. The Global Business Mobility visa covers intra-company transfers, so it can matter if you are already working for Bosch Group or ABM UK in another country and want to move to their UK team. The High Potential Individual route is for recent graduates of a small list of top-ranked universities worldwide, with no job offer needed. The Youth Mobility Scheme applies only to citizens of certain countries and within an age band. Eligibility rules vary by nationality and change often, so verify everything against the official GOV.UK pages.

If you already hold a visa with no restrictions on the kind of work you can do, say so in one line at the top of your CV. Recruiters spend their first scan deciding whether to rule you out.

Language expectations, stated honestly#

Operations work in the UK is spoken work. Shift briefings, safety instructions, customer escalations, contractor calls. You need enough English to follow a safety procedure the first time it is read to you.

A B2 level is a practical floor for most of these roles. For anything with a customer-facing or coordination title, aim for C1. Some listings want a second language: "Technical Customer Service Advisor - French Speaking" at Paxton Access is a good example of where that pays off.

Do not oversell it. If your written English is stronger than your spoken English, say so. A recruiter who hires you on a false impression fires you during probation.

CV norms for the UK#

UK recruiters expect a specific shape. Keep it to two pages maximum, one is fine early in your career. Put contact details, a two-line profile, then reverse-chronological experience with bullets. No photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no national ID number. Those read as foreign and make screening harder.

Use British spelling where you can: organisation, programme, analyse. Put your right-to-work status in the top third. And replace duties with results.

Weak: Responsible for warehouse operations and team coordination.

Strong: Ran a 12-person warehouse shift, cutting pick errors by 18% over six months by rewriting the packing checklist.

The second version is what a UK hiring manager is trained to look for. If you want a template you can edit, the cover letter tool on JobRise also helps you shape the letter that sits alongside the CV.

Applying from abroad#

You can apply from anywhere. The friction is the interview process and the notice period. Expect at least one video interview, sometimes two, and a possible in-person round for senior roles.

Be upfront about your timeline. "Available to relocate within eight weeks of offer, visa application already prepared" tells a recruiter you have thought about this. "I would need to figure out the visa" tells them to move on.

Target the largest employers first. Biffa Waste Services, Rentokil Initial Group and Lanes Group post repeatedly and run high-volume recruitment, which usually means a more structured process and more room for candidates who need paperwork support. Small firms often cannot wait three months for a visa decision.

Remote and hybrid options#

Look at the job types again: 552 full-time, 26 part-time, 11 contract. These are on-site jobs. Titles like "LGV 2 Driver AM" at Biffa Waste Services, "Loader Operative" at Biffa Waste Services, "Maintenance Technician" at Fora Space Limited and "Facilities Operations Support Coordinator" at ABM UK all point to physical presence.

Remote work in operations is rare and usually sits in planning or customer service rather than the operational core. Do not build your search around it.

Entry-level openings are scarce#

Only 7 of the 589 listings looked entry-level by title. Examples: "Junior Customer Experience Executive" at Klira, "Graduate Horticultural Technician" at Rentokil Initial Group, "Graduate / Junior Mechanical Engineer" at Accora, "Junior Personal Assistant" at Debenhams Group, "Graduate, Planning & Procurement" at Bosch Group, "Junior Manufacturing Operator (Weekends)" at elasticStage.

That is roughly one in eighty. If you are early career, widen the net: apply to roles titled Coordinator, Assistant or Operative and be willing to start one level below where you think you belong.

Pay: what the data actually shows#

Only 1 of 589 listings showed a salary. It read: "Customer Experience Associate - London" at Ramp: £39K, £43K • Offers Equity • This role will be paid hourly with a minimum hourly expectation..

One listing is not a benchmark. For operations roles in the UK, published market ranges vary widely by seniority and city. Verify any number you are quoted against the current GOV.UK guidance on visa salary thresholds and the employer's own posting.

The 7-step plan#

  • Check your visa eligibility on GOV.UK first, before you write a single application.
  • Rewrite your CV to UK format: no photo, two pages, results in bullets, right-to-work status near the top.
  • Pull the current open listings from the UK operations jobs hub and filter to cities you can realistically move to.
  • Build a shortlist of 20 employers, weighting the high-volume ones: Biffa Waste Services, Rentokil Initial Group, Lanes Group, Together Housing.
  • Draft one strong cover letter per employer using the JobRise cover letter tool, then adjust the first paragraph by hand each time.
  • Track applications in a spreadsheet: employer, role, date, visa question asked, next step.
  • Prepare for the visa question in interviews with one honest sentence about your status and timeline.

Where to look next#

FAQ#

Do I need a job offer before applying for a UK visa?

For the Skilled Worker route, yes, from an employer holding a sponsor licence. Routes like High Potential Individual or Youth Mobility Scheme work differently, so check GOV.UK for your nationality and circumstances.

Can I get an operations job in the UK without experience?

Possible but hard. Only 7 of 589 listings on 14 October 2026 looked entry-level by title. Look for Coordinator, Assistant and Operative titles, and be flexible on city.

Which UK cities have the most operations vacancies?

London had 101 listings on 14 October 2026, well ahead of Manchester (17), Aberdeen (14), Airdrie (12) and Bristol (11). Outside these, the counts drop quickly.

Should I mention my visa status on my CV?

Yes, one line near the top. Something like "Right to work: Skied Worker visa in progress, CoS required" or "Right to work: unrestricted" removes the recruiter's main reason to reject you.

Are operations salaries in the UK published on job ads?

Rarely. Only 1 of the 589 listings in the 14 October 2026 snapshot showed pay. Ask about the range early in the process and check the figure against current GOV.UK salary threshold guidance before you plan around it.
