"I Have No Experience. What Do I Even Write?"#

Here is a question we get 50 times a day. Literally. From B.Tech CSE students at Amity, BCA graduates from IP University, MCA freshers from Pune, B.Com students from DU. All the same panic: "I have zero experience. My resume is empty."

No. It isn't. You just think it is.

According to the India Skills Report 2025 (Wheebox), 84% of Indian students feel unprepared for the job market. That's not because they're unqualified. It's because nobody taught them how to translate what they've already done into resume language.

Hot take: your college project IS experience. A "to-do app" IS a full-stack application. A "weather app using API" IS an integration project. Stop underselling yourself.

There was a viral Reddit post a while back where a fresher said "Please burn my resume, I have nothing." The comments section was brutal, but also instructive. Dozens of people pointed out that the guy had three solid projects, an NPTEL certificate, and a hackathon participation on his profile. He just didn't think any of it "counted."

It counts. All of it counts. Here's how to present it so recruiters (and ATS software) see it too.

You Have More Than You Think (Seriously)#

Before you tell yourself "I have nothing to write", do this exercise. Grab a piece of paper. Check how many of these you have:

  • Academic projects (mini project, major project, lab assignments)
  • Any internship (even a 2-week one counts)
  • College fest or event organization
  • Technical club or non-technical club participation
  • Personal projects (a website, an app, a script, anything)
  • Online certifications (Coursera, NPTEL, Udemy, Google)
  • Competitive coding profiles (LeetCode, CodeChef, HackerRank)
  • Hackathon participation
  • Workshops or bootcamps attended
  • Blog posts or technical articles written
  • Volunteer work or NGO involvement
  • Sports achievements at university level
  • NCC, NSS, or community service

If you checked even 3-4 of these, you have enough for a strong fresher resume. Most people we work with check 5-7 and still say "I have nothing." The trick isn't having more experience. It's presenting what you already have the right way.

What to Put on a Fresher Resume (Instead of Experience)#

Academic Projects: Your Secret Weapon

Every B.Tech, BCA, MCA, or BSc student has done at least 2-3 academic projects. Yes, even the "useless" ones. These are the backbone of your fresher resume. The mistake most students make is writing them like they're embarrassed:

Wrong way: "Made a weather app using API"

Right way: "Developed a real-time weather forecasting application using React.js and OpenWeatherMap API, serving current conditions and 5-day forecasts for 200,000+ cities worldwide"

Same exact project. Completely different impression. The second version actually tells the recruiter what you built, what tech you used, and what the scale was. (We cover how to format this for ATS in our ATS resume format guide.)

Internships: Even 1 Month Counts

If you did any internship (1 month, 2 months, a virtual internship on Internshala), include it. Describe what you actually did, not just that you "interned at XYZ company." Use specific numbers and outcomes wherever possible.

College Activities, Fests, and Clubs

Organized a college fest? That demonstrates project management, teamwork, and leadership. Were you a member of the coding club? That shows initiative and passion. Do not underestimate these experiences.

Example: "Coordinated logistics for TechFest 2025, a 3-day technical festival with 1,200+ participants and 15 events, managing a team of 20 volunteers"

Personal Projects

These are often MORE impressive than academic projects because they show initiative. You built something because you wanted to, not because a professor assigned it. A GitHub repository with even a simple project tells recruiters you genuinely care about the field.

A BCA student from IP University we worked with had a personal project: a Chrome extension that blocks distracting websites during study hours. Sounds small? She got asked about it in every single interview. It showed initiative, problem-solving, and actual shipping ability. That matters more than another "Library Management System."

Certifications and Online Courses

NPTEL certificates, Coursera specializations, Google certificates, AWS Cloud Practitioner. These are legitimate credentials that Indian recruiters recognize. A B.Tech CSE student from Amity University told us her NPTEL Gold Medal in Data Structures was the first thing the Wipro interviewer asked about. List the platform, course name, and completion date.

Specific courses worth mentioning: Machine Learning Specialization on Coursera (Andrew Ng), NPTEL Programming in Java, AWS Cloud Practitioner, and Google Data Analytics Certificate. These are recognized by name at Indian companies (yes, even at TCS).

Volunteer Work and Extracurriculars

NSS, NCC, volunteering at NGOs, mentoring juniors. These demonstrate soft skills that companies value. Do not fill your resume with them, but 1-2 strong entries add character.

Resume Format for Freshers: Section by Section#

Here is the exact structure to follow. Each section is listed in the order it should appear on your resume.

1. Contact Information

PRIYA SHARMA
+91 98765 43210 | [email protected]
linkedin.com/in/priyasharma | github.com/priyasharma
Mumbai, Maharashtra

Include: Name, phone number, professional email, LinkedIn URL, GitHub URL (for tech roles), city and state.

Do NOT include: Photo, date of birth, father's name, permanent address, marital status. These are outdated Indian resume practices that waste space and are not required.

2. Professional Summary (NOT "Career Objective")

Drop the "Career Objective." It's 2026. "Seeking a challenging role where I can grow and contribute to the organization." Every recruiter has read this 10,000 times. It says nothing.

Write a 2-3 line Professional Summary instead: who you are, what you can do, what you're targeting. Pack it with keywords from the job description.

Example for B.Tech CS fresher:

B.Tech Computer Science graduate (2026) from Pune University with strong foundation in Java, Python, and full-stack web development. Built 4 projects including a food delivery platform using React.js and Node.js. Seeking a Software Engineer role to contribute technical skills to a product-focused team.

Example for B.Com/BBA graduate:

BBA graduate with specialization in Marketing from Delhi University. Completed a 4-month digital marketing internship with hands-on experience in Google Ads, SEO, and social media strategy. Proficient in Google Analytics and Canva. Seeking an entry-level Marketing Executive role.

3. Education

List your most recent education first. Include CGPA only if it is above 7.0 (or 65% equivalent). If your CGPA is lower, simply leave it out. Do not write "CGPA: 5.8/10" on your resume.

B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering
XYZ Institute of Technology, Pune - Savitribai Phule Pune University
Expected Graduation: June 2026 | CGPA: 8.5/10

Higher Secondary (12th), Science Stream
ABC Junior College, Mumbai - Maharashtra State Board
Completed: 2022 | Percentage: 88%

4. Technical Skills

Group skills into categories. Only list skills you can confidently discuss in an interview.

Programming Languages: Java, Python, C, JavaScript
Web Development: HTML5, CSS3, React.js, Node.js, Express.js
Databases: MySQL, MongoDB
Version Control: Git, GitHub
Tools: VS Code, Postman, JIRA, Figma
Cloud: AWS (basic), Firebase

Pro tip: Look at the job description. If it mentions "React.js", do not write "React". Use the exact same format they use.

5. Projects: THE Most Important Section

For freshers, this section IS your experience section. This is where recruiters decide if you can actually do the work. We cannot stress this enough. A well-written Projects section has gotten people with 6.5 CGPA selected over 9.0 CGPA candidates who listed their projects as one-liners.

For each project, include:

  • Project name
  • Tech stack used
  • 2-3 bullet points using the Action-Task-Result formula

Example 1: Full-Stack Web Application:

Food Delivery Platform | React.js, Node.js, MongoDB, Razorpay API
• Developed a full-stack food ordering application with restaurant
listings, real-time order tracking, and integrated Razorpay payment
  gateway
• Implemented JWT-based user authentication and role-based access
for customers, restaurant owners, and delivery agents
• Deployed on Heroku with CI/CD pipeline using GitHub Actions,
achieving 99% uptime over 2 months

Example 2: Data Science Project:

Customer Churn Prediction Model | Python, Pandas, Scikit-learn, Matplotlib
• Built a machine learning model to predict customer churn for a telecom
dataset with 7,000+ records, achieving 87% accuracy using Random Forest
• Performed feature engineering and exploratory data analysis to identify
top 5 factors contributing to customer churn
• Created interactive visualizations using Matplotlib and Seaborn to
  present findings

6. Internships (If Any)

Web Development Intern | TechSolutions Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore
May 2025 – July 2025
• Developed 5 responsive landing pages using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript,
improving mobile conversion rate by 15%
• Collaborated with a 4-person design team to implement UI components
  from Figma mockups

If you have no internship at all, simply skip this section. Do not write "No experience" or leave it empty with just the heading.

7. Achievements and Certifications

• Ranked in top 5% globally on LeetCode with 350+ problems solved
• Winner, Smart India Hackathon 2025 (Software Edition) - Problem
  Statement by Ministry of Education
• AWS Cloud Practitioner Certified (2025)
• Completed "Machine Learning Specialization" on Coursera by
  Stanford University (2025)
• NPTEL Gold Medal in Data Structures and Algorithms (Top 2%)

Notice how each bullet has a specific number or ranking? "Top 5%", "350+", "Top 2%". That specificity is what separates a forgettable resume from one that gets interview calls. Vague is invisible. Specific is memorable.

How to ATS-Optimize Your Fresher Resume#

You could write the best resume content in the world, and it won't matter if ATS can't read it. We have seen this happen hundreds of times. Great projects, great skills, ATS score of 28. (Read our full ATS resume format guide for the deep dive.)

Here is a quick checklist specifically for freshers:

  1. Use a simple format: single column, no graphics, no tables, no skill bars
  2. Match keywords exactly: read the JD and mirror the technology names they use
  3. Use standard section headings: "Education" not "Academic Background", "Skills" not "My Arsenal"
  4. Place your best keywords early: Professional Summary should contain your top 5-6 keywords
  5. Do not put contact info in the header: many ATS systems skip document headers
  6. Include both full forms and abbreviations: "Artificial Intelligence (AI)", "Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)"
  7. Name your file properly: "Priya_Sharma_Resume.pdf" not "resume final final (3).pdf"
  8. Test with an ATS checker: upload your resume and a sample JD to see your score before applying

FAQ#

How many projects should I put on a fresher resume?

Include 2-4 projects. Quality matters more than quantity. Choose projects that are relevant to the job you are applying for. If you are applying for a web development role, feature your web projects, even if your ML project was technically more complex.

Should I include 10th and 12th marks on my resume?

Include 12th marks if they are strong (above 80%). You can skip 10th marks unless the company specifically asks for them (some mass recruiters like TCS and Infosys still check all academic scores during their application process). Once you have work experience, you will remove these entirely.

What if my CGPA is low (below 7.0)?

If your CGPA is below the typical cutoff for mass recruiters (usually 6.0-7.0), you have two options: leave it out entirely (some companies require it during the application form anyway), or compensate with strong projects, certifications, and competitive coding achievements. A candidate with 6.5 CGPA and three impressive projects will often get selected over a 9.0 CGPA candidate with a bare resume.

Should I write a "Career Objective" or "Professional Summary"?

Professional Summary. Always. Career Objectives like "Seeking a challenging role where I can grow and contribute" are generic filler that every recruiter at Glassdoor India will tell you they skip. A Professional Summary includes your degree, key skills, best project, and target role, all with keywords that help ATS matching.

Can I include personal hobbies on my resume?

Only if they are relevant or demonstrate valuable skills. "Reading books" or "Listening to music" adds no value. But "Competitive chess (State-level ranked)", "Technical blogging (500+ monthly readers)", or "Open-source contributor (3 merged PRs on popular repositories)". These are worth including.

How long should a fresher resume be?

Strictly one page. Recruiters at Indian campus placements and mass hiring drives review hundreds of resumes. A one-page resume that covers your best projects, skills, and education is far more effective than a two-page resume padded with filler. If your resume is spilling to a second page, cut the least relevant content until it fits on one page.
