TCS Hired 44,000 Freshers Last Year. Here's How to Be One of Them.#

TCS hired 44,000 freshers in FY2025. That's the good news.

The bad news? Over 15 lakh students appeared for TCS NQT. That's a selection rate of under 3%.

We talked to 50+ candidates who got selected in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 hiring cycles, across Ninja and Digital tracks, from colleges ranging from NITs to private universities in tier-2 cities. This guide is based on what they actually faced, not generic advice you'll find on every other website.

Here is the step-by-step hiring process:

Step 1: TCS NQT (National Qualifier Test): online aptitude and coding exam. This is the screening round.

Step 2: Technical Interview: face-to-face or virtual interview on CS fundamentals, your projects, and technical skills.

Step 3: Managerial Interview: situational questions, problem-solving ability, and cultural fit.

Step 4: HR Interview: final round covering salary expectations, location preference, background verification, and joining confirmation.

TCS hires for two main roles, and the salary difference is significant:

  • TCS Ninja: 3.36 LPA (some batches see 3.6 LPA). This is the standard mass hiring track.
  • TCS Digital: 7-7.5 LPA (as of 2025-26 batch). More competitive, better projects, faster growth.

Your NQT score determines your track. Score above the Digital cutoff and you get Digital interviews. Cross the Ninja cutoff and you enter the regular pipeline. The difference in starting salary is literally 2x, so if you can push for Digital, push hard.

All of this happens through the TCS NextStep portal: registration, NQT scheduling, interview slots, offer letters, everything. Bookmark it now if you haven't already.

TCS NQT Exam Pattern 2026#

The TCS NQT is an online proctored exam conducted through TCS iON. Here is the complete pattern based on what candidates from recent cycles reported:

Part A: Foundation Section

SectionTopicsQuestionsTime
Numerical AbilityNumber systems, percentages, profit & loss, time & work, probability, permutations20-26 questionsCombined time
Verbal AbilityReading comprehension, grammar, sentence correction, para jumbles, synonyms/antonyms20-24 questionsCombined time
Reasoning AbilityLogical reasoning, puzzles, seating arrangement, coding-decoding, blood relations, syllogisms20-24 questionsCombined time

Total Part A: ~70 questions in 90 minutes. This section is common for all candidates.

Part B: Advanced Section (For TCS Digital)

SectionTopicsQuestionsTime
Advanced QuantitativeHigher-level aptitude, data interpretation, advanced probability10-15 questionsCombined time
Advanced ReasoningComplex logical puzzles, pattern recognition10-15 questionsCombined time

Total Part B: ~25-30 questions in 45 minutes. Only attempted if you are targeting TCS Digital.

Part C: Programming Section

SectionDetailsTime
Coding Question 1Easy-Medium difficultyPart of combined time
Coding Question 2Medium-Hard difficultyPart of combined time

Languages allowed: C, C++, Java, Python, Perl

Total Part C: 2 coding questions in 45 minutes.

NQT Cut-off Marks (Approximate)

These vary by year and demand, but typical cutoffs are:

TrackApproximate Cutoff
TCS Ninja55-65% overall
TCS Digital75-80% overall (including Part B)

Key tip from selected candidates: Focus on accuracy over speed. There is negative marking in some sections. Multiple people told us they left 5-8 questions unanswered and still cleared the cutoff. Guessing wrong is worse than skipping.

TCS Technical Interview Questions (20 Most-Asked, Based on Real Interviews)#

The technical interview usually lasts 20-40 minutes. Based on our conversations with 50+ selected candidates, these are the questions that come up again and again. Not "might be asked" but actually asked, in actual TCS interviews, in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 cycles.

OOP (Object-Oriented Programming)

#QuestionKey Answer Points
1What are the four pillars of OOP?Encapsulation (hiding internal state), Abstraction (showing only essentials), Inheritance (child inherits from parent), Polymorphism (multiple forms: overloading and overriding)
2Difference between method overloading and overriding?Overloading: same name, different parameters, same class (compile-time). Overriding: child class redefines parent method with same signature (runtime).
3Abstract class vs Interface?Abstract class: can have concrete methods + instance variables, single inheritance. Interface: only abstract methods (traditionally), supports multiple implementation.
4Explain encapsulation with an example.Bank account: balance is private, accessed only via deposit() and withdraw() methods with validation. Data + methods bundled together.

DBMS

#QuestionKey Answer Points
5SQL vs NoSQL databases?SQL: relational, tables, ACID, structured (MySQL, PostgreSQL). NoSQL: non-relational, documents/key-value, horizontally scalable (MongoDB, Cassandra).
6What is normalization (1NF, 2NF, 3NF)?Reducing redundancy. 1NF: atomic values. 2NF: 1NF + no partial dependency. 3NF: 2NF + no transitive dependency.
7What is a JOIN? Types?Combines rows from 2+ tables. Types: INNER (matching only), LEFT (all left + matching right), RIGHT, FULL OUTER, CROSS (Cartesian product).
8SQL query for second highest salary?SELECT MAX(salary) FROM Employee WHERE salary < (SELECT MAX(salary) FROM Employee);

Operating Systems

#QuestionKey Answer Points
9Process vs Thread?Process: independent, own memory. Thread: lightweight, shares process memory. Thread switching is cheaper.
10What is deadlock? Conditions?Processes blocked forever, each waiting for the other. Conditions: Mutual Exclusion, Hold & Wait, No Preemption, Circular Wait.
11Paging vs Segmentation?Paging: fixed-size blocks, no external fragmentation. Segmentation: variable-size logical segments, can fragment externally.

Data Structures

#QuestionKey Answer Points
12Array vs Linked List?Array: contiguous memory, O(1) access, O(n) insert/delete. Linked List: non-contiguous, O(n) access, O(1) insert/delete at known position.
13Stack vs Queue with examples?Stack: LIFO (stack of plates). Queue: FIFO (people in a line).
14Binary Search Tree time complexity?BST: left subtree smaller, right larger. Average: O(log n) for search/insert/delete. Worst (skewed): O(n).
15BFS vs DFS?BFS: level-by-level using queue, finds shortest path. DFS: depth-first using stack/recursion, uses less memory.

Project-Related and General

#QuestionHow to Answer
16Tell me about your major project.Structure: Problem → Technologies used (and why) → Your contribution → Challenges → Result. Practice this until fluent.
17Why did you choose [technology X]?Give a genuine technical reason. "React.js for component-based architecture and virtual DOM performance."
18What would you improve in your project?Mention realistic improvements: adding tests, authentication, performance optimization, deployment.
19Compiler vs Interpreter?Compiler: translates entire code at once (C, Java). Interpreter: line by line (Python). Compiled is faster, interpreted is more flexible.
20What is an API? Example?Rules for software communication. Example: weather app calling OpenWeatherMap API to get temperature data in JSON.

TCS HR Interview Questions (15 Questions: What They Actually Want to Hear)#

The HR round usually lasts 10-20 minutes. It feels informal, which makes people drop their guard. Don't. This round has a surprisingly high rejection rate, not because the questions are hard, but because people give canned answers or say something careless about relocation/shifts.

Q1: Tell me about yourself. Structure: Education, key skills, best project, what you are looking for. Keep it under 2 minutes. Example: "I am [Name], a B.Tech CS graduate from [College]. I built a full-stack e-commerce application using React and Node.js, and completed AWS Cloud Practitioner certification. I am excited to start my career at TCS working on enterprise projects."

Q2: Why do you want to join TCS? Be specific. TCS's scale (600,000+ employees, 46 countries), learning opportunities (Initial Learning Program), diverse domains (banking, healthcare, retail), Tata Group stability. Do NOT say "TCS is a great company and I want to grow with it." Every single candidate says that. Stand out by mentioning something specific, maybe a TCS project you read about, or the fact that TCS operates in 46 countries and you want international exposure.

Q3: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Show realistic ambition: "A technical expert in my domain, possibly leading a small team, with expertise in cloud technologies and experience across multiple enterprise projects."

Q4: What are your strengths and weaknesses? Strengths: Pick 2-3 with proof ("solved 300+ LeetCode problems, showing strong problem-solving"). Weakness: Pick a real one and show you are fixing it ("I over-perfect code, so now I set time limits and ship working versions first").

Q5: Are you comfortable with relocation? Say yes. TCS assigns you based on project needs. Frame it positively: "An opportunity to experience different cities."

Q6: Are you okay working in any technology/domain? Say yes. "The first few years are about learning across technologies. I am ready to contribute wherever TCS needs me."

Q7: What do you know about the TCS service agreement? Show awareness: 2-year agreement from joining date. Financial obligation if you leave early. Be honest that you are committed.

Q8: Do you have any backlogs? Be honest. TCS verifies records. If you had backlogs that you cleared, mention how you overcame the challenge. Active backlogs must be cleared before joining.

Q9: What is your expected salary? Campus salary is fixed. TCS Ninja: 3.36 LPA, TCS Digital: 7-7.5 LPA (as of 2025-26 batch). Say: "I am aware of the package and comfortable with it. Learning and growth matter more at this stage." Do not try to negotiate. Seriously. It is not that kind of conversation.

Q10: Why should we hire you? Connect your skills directly: "Strong technical foundation, hands-on project experience, and willingness to learn, exactly what a fresher role at TCS requires."

Q11: Tell me about a challenge you overcame. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Example: "My project crashed under concurrent users. I researched and implemented connection pooling and Redis caching, reducing response time by 70%."

Q12: How do you handle pressure? "I prioritize by urgency, break tasks into milestones, and focus on one thing at a time. During overlapping college deadlines, this approach helped me deliver everything on time."

Q13: Are you willing to work in night shifts? Say yes. TCS serves global clients in different time zones. "I am willing to work in shifts as required by the project."

Q14: Do you have any questions for us? Always ask at least one: "What does the Initial Learning Program look like?" or "What projects do freshers typically work on in year one?"

Q15: Any gaps or concerns in your academics? Be straightforward about any gaps. If you took time off for preparation or personal reasons, explain briefly and positively. Never lie. TCS does background verification.

TCS Managerial Round: What to Expect#

The Managerial Round (MR) is not conducted for every candidate, mainly for TCS Digital or borderline cases. Of the 50+ candidates we spoke with, about 60% of Digital candidates had an MR, and roughly 20% of Ninja candidates. They assess problem-solving approach, communication, teamwork, and business awareness.

Common MR questions:

  • "If a client is unhappy with your deliverable, what would you do?"
  • "You and a teammate disagree on the approach. How do you resolve it?"
  • "Explain cloud computing to a non-technical person."

Stay calm and structure your answers. They want to see how you think, not perfection.

Common Mistakes That Get You Rejected (We've Heard These From Interviewers)#

  1. Not knowing your own resume. If you listed "Python", be ready for Python questions. One candidate told us the interviewer asked "You've written Python on your resume. What's a decorator?" and the candidate had no idea. Instant credibility loss. Never list skills you cannot explain.
  2. Textbook answers without examples. "Polymorphism is the ability of an object to take many forms." Okay, but give an example from your project. Interviewers want to see you can apply concepts, not just memorize them.
  3. Refusing relocation or shifts. Almost guaranteed rejection. TCS operates across India and serves global clients. If you say "I only want Bangalore" or "No night shifts", the interview is basically over.
  4. Badmouthing your college. "My college didn't teach us anything." Even if true, don't say it. Talk about what you learned despite the limitations.
  5. Not asking questions in HR round. Saying "No questions" signals disinterest. Always ask at least one genuine question.
  6. Negotiating campus salary. The package is fixed (3.36 LPA Ninja, 7+ LPA Digital). Don't negotiate. It's not that kind of process.
  7. Poor communication. You don't need perfect English. But practice speaking your answers out loud before the interview. There's a massive difference between reading an answer and speaking it confidently.

How to Prepare in 30 Days: Study Plan#

WeekFocus AreaDaily Effort
Week 1Aptitude (Quantitative + Verbal + Reasoning). Solve 20 problems daily from IndiaBix or PrepInsta's TCS NQT section.2-3 hours
Week 2CS Fundamentals: OOP, DBMS, OS, Networking. Revise college notes + GeeksforGeeks TCS interview tag.2-3 hours
Week 3Data Structures + Coding. Solve 2-3 easy/medium problems daily on LeetCode or HackerRank in your preferred language.3-4 hours
Week 4Mock interviews + HR prep. Practice answering common questions out loud. Revise your project in detail. (Our interview ki taiyari guide covers this in Hindi.)2-3 hours

Daily habits: Read 1 English article and summarize it (this genuinely helps with the verbal section), solve 5 aptitude questions, and review one CS concept before bed.

Specific resources we recommend:

  • PrepInsta TCS NQT section: previous year NQT questions, section-wise practice
  • TCS iON: official TCS practice platform for NQT
  • GeeksforGeeks: CS fundamentals, company-specific interview archives
  • LeetCode Easy/Medium: for the coding section (sort by "Easy", do 50-60 problems)
  • HackerRank: good for building speed in a timed coding environment
  • IndiaBix: classic aptitude practice (quant, reasoning, verbal)

Practice with AI Mock Interviews#

Here is something every selected candidate told us: "I practiced answers out loud." Every. Single. One. Reading answers on GeeksforGeeks is not the same as speaking them under pressure. The gap between "I know this" and "I can explain this clearly in 2 minutes" is massive.

JobRise's AI Mock Interview Bot simulates a real TCS interview experience:

  • Select "TCS" as the company and "Fresher" as the experience level
  • The AI asks you technical, HR, and situational questions one by one
  • You respond as you would in a real interview
  • Get instant feedback on your answer quality, communication, and areas to improve
  • Practice as many times as you want until you feel confident

FAQ#

What is the TCS Ninja package for freshers in 2026?

TCS Ninja offers approximately 3.36-3.6 LPA (Lakhs Per Annum) for freshers. This is the base package for the standard hiring track. TCS Digital offers approximately 7-7.5 LPA for candidates with higher NQT scores. These figures include base salary, variable pay, and other benefits. The exact numbers may vary slightly each year.

How many times can I attempt the TCS NQT?

TCS typically allows candidates to attempt the NQT multiple times. The exam is usually conducted 2-3 times per year. If you did not qualify in one attempt, you can register again for the next NQT cycle. However, check the official TCS NextStep portal for the latest rules on re-attempts, as the policy can change.

Is there a TCS service bond? What happens if I leave early?

TCS has a service agreement (commonly called "bond") of approximately 2 years from the date of joining. If you resign before completing the agreement period, you may need to pay a specified amount (this varies but is typically around ₹50,000-75,000). The agreement is a legal document you sign at the time of joining. Read it carefully.

What is the TCS waiting period after the offer letter?

The waiting period can range from 3 to 12+ months depending on hiring cycle and project demand. Stay in touch via TCS NextStep portal, complete pre-joining formalities, and use the waiting time to build skills. This is actually a great window to optimize your resume and start applying to other companies in parallel. Having a TCS offer as backup gives you confidence to aim higher.

What programming languages should I know for TCS NQT coding?

C, C++, Java, Python, or Perl. Python is popular for simpler syntax. Java is a safe choice since TCS uses it extensively. Pick the language you are most comfortable with and practice writing complete programs without IDE auto-complete.

TCS interviews are not about being a genius. They are about preparation. We have talked to enough selected candidates to know this: the ones who clear it aren't always the smartest in their batch. They're the ones who practiced answers out loud, knew their projects cold, and didn't panic in the HR round.

44,000 seats. 15 lakh+ applicants. The odds aren't great, but they're a lot better when you actually prepare.

Follow the 30-day plan. Practice with mock interviews. Walk in knowing what to expect.
