You've Been Staring at a Blank Word Doc for 2 Hours#
Be honest. You opened Microsoft Word (or Google Docs), typed your name at the top, maybe added your phone number and email... and then sat there. For a long time. Wondering what to write. How to format it. What font to use. Whether you need a photo or not. Whether the "Objective" section is still a thing. Whether your 2-month internship at a startup nobody has heard of even counts.
Meanwhile, your placement cell WhatsApp group is on fire. "Bhai TCS form ka deadline kal hai." "Infosys ne portal open kiya." "Cognizant ka link aaya kya?" Everyone is panicking. And you're still stuck on page one of your resume.
This is the reality for lakhs of Indian freshers every year. You know you need a resume. You know it needs to be good. But nobody actually teaches you how to make one. Your college placement cell gives you a "sample format" that looks like it was made in 2011, and your seniors tell you to "just use Canva." (Spoiler: Canva templates are an ATS disaster.)
If you're using an AI resume builder for the first time, this guide will walk you through the whole process. No fluff. No "first, let us understand the importance of resumes." Just the practical stuff.
Why Most Resume Builders Suck#
Before we get into what actually works, let's talk about what doesn't. Because you've probably already tried a few resume builder websites and felt scammed.
1. Every template looks the same
Go to any free resume builder right now. You'll see the same 4-5 templates recycled across every site. Two-column, single-column, "creative," and something called "executive." They all look like they were designed in 2018 and never updated.
2. No ATS optimization
Here's the thing that most resume builders don't tell you: a resume that looks pretty to humans can score 0 on ATS software. Two-column layouts, text boxes, fancy icons, skill bars that show "Python: 80%" with a colored bar. ATS can't read any of that. It sees garbled text or nothing at all.
75% of resumes get auto-rejected by ATS before any human sees them. That Harvard Business School stat isn't a scare tactic. It's what happens when you upload a Canva template to Naukri or the TCS career portal.
If your resume builder doesn't check for ATS compatibility, you're building something that gets filtered out before it's ever read. We covered the full breakdown of this in our ATS resume checker guide.
3. They charge in USD
Jobscan: $49.95/month. ResumeWorded: $19/month. Teal: $29/month. All in USD. That's over ₹4,000/month just to format your resume. For a student whose monthly pocket money is ₹3,000, that's not a realistic option.
There's no reason a resume builder needs to cost $50/month. The AI API calls behind it cost ₹5-10 per resume. The rest is markup.
4. No "fresher mode"
Almost every resume builder assumes you have 3+ years of work experience. The template starts with "Professional Experience" as the biggest section. If you're a B.Tech fresher from VIT or a BCA grad from IP University, you don't HAVE professional experience. You have projects, internships, certifications, and hackathons. But most tools don't know what to do with that.
What JobRise AI Resume Builder Does Differently#
We built JobRise's resume builder after talking to 200+ Indian freshers about what frustrated them. The four biggest requests were always the same: "make it simple," "make it ATS-friendly," "I don't have experience, help me with that," and "don't charge me in dollars."
So here's what we built:
Split-panel editor with live preview
The left side is where you type. The right side shows your resume exactly as it will look when downloaded as a PDF. Every change you make shows up instantly. No more "edit, download, check, delete, re-edit" loops.
AI Enhance button
This is the feature most people end up loving. You type a rough description of your project or internship, and the AI rewrites it using strong action verbs and proper resume format. It turns:
"Made a weather app using React"
Into:
"Developed a real-time weather forecasting application using React.js and OpenWeatherMap API, displaying current conditions and 5-day forecasts for 200,000+ cities"
Same project. Completely different impression. The AI knows what recruiters at companies like Infosys, Wipro, and TCS are scanning for. (We covered this transformation technique in our fresher resume guide too.)
ATS score badge (live)
A small badge in the corner of your preview shows your resume's ATS score in real-time. As you add keywords, fix formatting, and improve bullet points, you can watch the score go up. No guessing. No "I hope this works."
The scoring uses the same algorithm as our free ATS score checker, so the number you see is what you'd get if you ran your resume through the checker separately.
Free to start, pay only if you need more
You can start building your resume without signing up. No email gate. No "enter your credit card to start your free trial." You build first, and only pay if you want premium features like AI Enhance or PDF export with watermark removed.
Step-by-Step: Build Your First Resume in 10 Minutes#
Here's exactly how it works. No shortcuts, no skipped steps.
Step 1: Pick a template (30 seconds)
You'll see three templates. Pick one. Don't overthink this. We'll explain the differences later in this article, but all three are ATS-compatible. You can switch templates at any time without losing your content.
Step 2: Fill in your contact info (1 minute)
- Full name
- Phone number (with +91)
- Professional email (not
[email protected]) - LinkedIn profile URL
- GitHub link (if you're in tech)
- City and state
That's it. No photo. We covered why you shouldn't add a photo in detail, but the short version: ATS can't parse images, and most international companies consider it a bias risk.
Step 3: Write your summary (2 minutes)
This is 2-3 lines at the top of your resume. Not an "objective statement." A summary.
Bad:
"Seeking a challenging position where I can utilize my skills and grow professionally."
Good:
"B.Tech CSE graduate (CGPA 8.2) with hands-on experience in React.js, Node.js, and Python. Built 3 full-stack projects including a real-time chat application. AWS Cloud Practitioner certified. Looking for a software development role in a product-based company."
See the difference? The second one has specifics. Keywords. Numbers. Things an ATS can match against a job description.
If you're stuck, hit the AI Enhance button. Paste your rough version and let the AI tighten it up.
Step 4: Add your education (1 minute)
- Degree name (B.Tech, BCA, MCA, B.Com, etc.)
- University/college name
- Graduation year
- CGPA or percentage (only if it's above 7.0/10 or 65%. If it's lower, just leave it out.)
For B.Tech students, we have a branch-wise guide with specific examples for CSE, ECE, Mechanical, and more.
Step 5: Add your skills (2 minutes)
Group them by category. The builder has pre-built sections for this:
- Programming Languages: Python, Java, C++, JavaScript
- Web Technologies: React.js, Node.js, HTML/CSS, REST APIs
- Databases: MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL
- Tools: Git, VS Code, Docker, Postman
- Soft Skills: (only if the JD specifically asks for them)
A common mistake: listing "MS Office" and "Communication Skills" as your top skills. Every single fresher does this. It means nothing to recruiters. We wrote a full guide on what skills to actually list.
Step 6: Add your projects (3 minutes)
This is the most important section for freshers. Not education. Not skills. Projects.
For each project, include:
- Project name and a one-line description
- Technologies used (list them explicitly so ATS picks them up)
- 2-3 bullet points describing what you built, in action verb format
- A link (GitHub repo or live demo, if available)
Here's what the AI Enhance does to a typical project description:
Before (what you type):
"I built a to-do app with React and Firebase. It has login and users can add tasks."
After (what AI generates):
- Engineered a task management web application using React.js, Firebase Authentication, and Cloud Firestore, supporting real-time CRUD operations
- Implemented secure user authentication with Google OAuth, handling 50+ concurrent user sessions
- Designed a responsive UI with Material-UI components, achieving 95+ Lighthouse performance score
Same project. The second version gets shortlisted.
Step 7: Add internships, certifications, and extras (1 minute)
- Internships: Even a 1-month virtual internship on Internshala counts. Describe what you did, not just where you interned.
- Certifications: NPTEL, Coursera, AWS, Google. Include the platform, course name, and date.
- Hackathons/Competitions: Include them. They show initiative.
- Activities: College fest coordination, club leadership, NCC/NSS.
Step 8: Review your ATS score (30 seconds)
Check the ATS score badge. If it's below 70, the builder will highlight what's missing. Usually it's keywords from the job description you haven't included yet, or formatting issues the scanner caught.
Step 9: Download your PDF (30 seconds)
Hit download. Your resume is generated as a clean, ATS-parseable PDF. Not an image PDF. Not a scanned document. A proper text-based PDF that every ATS system in India can read.
Total time: Under 10 minutes. For most people it's closer to 7.
3 Templates Explained: Which One Should You Pick?#
All three templates are ATS-compatible. This is non-negotiable. We tested them against Taleo (used by TCS), SuccessFactors (Infosys), Workday (Wipro), and Freshteam (most Indian startups). 100% parse rate across all four.
Here's what's different:
1. Classic
Best for: Traditional companies, MNCs, government PSUs, mass recruiters
- Single column, clear section dividers
- Conservative font and spacing
- Maximum readability for ATS parsers
- Standard section order: Summary, Education, Skills, Projects, Experience
If you're applying to TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Cognizant, Accenture, or any company that does mass hiring of freshers, use this template. These companies process thousands of resumes per day through ATS. The simpler your format, the higher your parse rate.
2. Modern
Best for: Startups, product companies, design/creative roles
- Clean layout with subtle color accents
- Slightly more visual personality (within ATS-safe limits)
- Emphasis on projects and portfolio links
- Good for companies like Razorpay, CRED, Zerodha, PhonePe, Freshworks
If you're targeting startup jobs or product-based companies, this template gives your resume a bit more personality without breaking ATS. The color accent is subtle enough that it prints well in black and white too (some companies still print resumes for panel interviews).
3. Minimal
Best for: Tech roles, developer positions, SDE applications
- Ultra-clean, almost terminal-like aesthetic
- Maximum white space
- Heavy emphasis on GitHub and portfolio links
- Built for people who want their code to speak louder than their formatting
This one works great if you're applying for software developer, SDE, or DevOps roles. Engineering managers at companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Flipkart tend to prefer resumes that are clean and get to the point fast. If you want to know more about prepping for these companies, check our Amazon interview guide or Google interview guide.
Quick decision guide:
| Applying to | Template |
|---|---|
| TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCL | Classic |
| Razorpay, CRED, Flipkart, Swiggy, PhonePe | Modern |
| Google, Microsoft, Amazon, backend SDE roles | Minimal |
| Not sure | Classic (safest choice) |
Fresher Mode: What It Does and Why It Matters#
When you select "Fresher" during setup, the builder changes in a few key ways:
1. Projects move above Experience
For experienced professionals, "Work Experience" is the first section after the summary. For freshers, this makes no sense. You don't have work experience. So Fresher Mode moves Projects to the top, right after your Skills section. This is what recruiters want to see from freshers anyway.
2. AI suggestions change
The AI Enhance feature gives different suggestions based on whether you're a fresher or experienced professional. In Fresher Mode, it:
- Suggests how to describe academic projects professionally
- Recommends action verbs appropriate for student projects
- Helps translate "I made a thing for my class" into resume-worthy bullet points
- Knows that "Library Management System" and "Weather App" are common projects and makes them sound unique
3. Certifications get their own section
In Fresher Mode, certifications (NPTEL, Coursera, Google, AWS) get a full section instead of being tucked into "Additional." For freshers, these certifications often carry the same weight as work experience at companies like TCS and Infosys.
4. Activities and leadership section
Fresher Mode adds a section for college activities, fest coordination, club leadership, NCC, NSS, and sports achievements. These are relevant for fresher hiring, especially at companies that value "cultural fit." We talk about how to present these effectively in our campus placement preparation guide.
ATS Optimization Built Into Every Resume#
This is the part that separates JobRise from every other resume builder out there. We don't just give you a template and wish you luck. We actively optimize your resume for ATS as you build it.
Live ATS score
The badge in the corner of your preview updates as you type. Add a keyword the job description asks for? Score goes up. Use a two-column layout that ATS can't parse? Score goes down. You always know where you stand.
Keyword matching
Paste the job description into the JD field, and the builder highlights which keywords from the JD are in your resume and which are missing. This is the exact same approach that the paid tools like Jobscan charge $50/month for.
For example, if a TCS job posting says "experience with Agile methodology, REST APIs, and microservices," and your resume only mentions "REST APIs," the builder will flag "Agile methodology" and "microservices" as missing keywords.
Format validation
The builder checks for:
- Font consistency (mixing 4 different fonts confuses ATS parsers)
- Standard section headings (writing "What I've Done" instead of "Experience" can cause parsing failures)
- File size (resumes over 2MB sometimes get rejected by upload forms)
- Page count (for freshers, it should be 1 page. Always.)
What we don't do
We don't stuff invisible keywords in white text. We don't add hidden metadata. Some "ATS optimization" tools do this, and it's a terrible idea. ATS systems are smart enough to detect keyword stuffing, and some companies auto-reject resumes that try it. We wrote about how ATS scoring actually works if you want the full breakdown.
Free vs. Paid: What You Get#
Here's the honest breakdown. No hidden catches.
Free (no sign-up needed)
- Access to all 3 templates
- Full resume editor with live preview
- ATS score badge
- Unlimited editing
- Download as PDF (with small JobRise watermark)
With JobRise Plan (starts at ₹199/month)
- Everything in Free
- AI Enhance for all sections (AI rewrites your bullet points)
- Keyword matching against a pasted job description
- No watermark on downloaded PDF
- Multiple resumes (save different versions for different roles)
- Access to all other JobRise tools (ATS Checker, Cover Letter Generator, Cold Email Generator, Mock Interview Bot, and more)
The free version is genuinely useful on its own. You can build a complete, ATS-compatible resume without paying anything. The paid features are for people who want AI help writing better bullet points and tailoring their resume to specific job descriptions.
Why we don't charge per resume
Some resume builders charge ₹99-199 per resume download. We think that's predatory. If you're applying to 50+ companies and need to tailor your resume each time, those per-download fees add up fast. JobRise's monthly plan gives you unlimited downloads.
9 Tips for a Strong Fresher Resume (Indian Context)#
These are specific to Indian freshers applying through Indian job portals and placement cells. Not generic advice that applies everywhere.
1. One page. Always.
If you're a fresher, your resume should be exactly one page. Not two. Not "one and a half." One. Recruiters at mass hiring companies like TCS and Infosys see 500+ resumes per day. They spend 6-7 seconds on each one. A two-page fresher resume tells them you don't know how to prioritize information.
2. Remove the "Objective" section
"To obtain a challenging position in a growth-oriented company where I can utilize my skills..." Stop. Every recruiter has read this exact sentence ten thousand times. Replace it with a 2-3 line Summary that includes your degree, top skills, key project, and what role you're targeting.
3. Quantify everything
Don't write "Built a web application." Write "Built a web application serving 500+ daily active users." Don't write "Organized a college event." Write "Organized TechFest 2025, a 3-day event with 1,200+ participants and 15 technical competitions."
Numbers make your resume scannable and specific. Even approximate numbers are better than no numbers.
4. Don't list every skill you've ever touched
If you used C once in your first-year lab, don't list it as a skill. Only list skills you can confidently discuss in an interview. A recruiter who sees "Python" on your resume WILL ask you a Python question. Be ready for it.
Check our guide on which skills to actually list on your resume for branch-specific recommendations.
5. Your GitHub link matters more than your CGPA
For tech roles, especially at product companies and startups, your GitHub profile is your second resume. A clean GitHub with 3-4 projects, proper READMEs, and regular commits tells a recruiter more than a 9.0 CGPA. We have a separate guide on building a solid GitHub profile for freshers.
6. Tailor your resume for each application
Yes, this means you'll have multiple versions of your resume. That's normal. The TCS NQT application needs a different keyword set than an Infosys InfyTQ application. The JobRise builder lets you save multiple versions so you're not starting from scratch every time.
7. Use the exact keywords from the job description
If the JD says "proficient in Java," write "Java" in your skills section. Not "J2EE." Not "Java-based technologies." The exact word. ATS systems do string matching. Close enough isn't good enough.
8. No fancy formatting
No tables. No text boxes. No multi-column layouts. No skill progress bars. No icons. No images. No headers/footers with your name. All of these break ATS parsing. Stick to a single-column layout with standard fonts. This is why all three JobRise templates are single-column by default.
For the full list of formatting mistakes, check our 15 resume mistakes Indian freshers make.
9. Get feedback before submitting
Don't submit the first draft. Run it through the JobRise ATS Checker to see your score. Ask a senior or mentor to review it. Most placement cells also offer resume review sessions. Use them.
Common Questions About AI Resume Builders#
"Will my resume look AI-generated?"
No. The AI enhances your content, it doesn't write from scratch. Your experiences, your projects, your skills. The AI just helps you describe them in a way that passes ATS filters and impresses recruiters. The final resume reads as professional, not robotic.
"Is it safe to put my information in an online tool?"
Yes. We don't store your resume data permanently. Your resume is built in your browser, and PDF generation happens client-side. We don't sell data. We don't share it. We make money from subscriptions, not from your information.
"Can I use this for experienced roles too?"
Absolutely. The "Fresher Mode" is optional. Turn it off, and the builder works just like any professional resume builder, with Work Experience as the primary section. It works for 2-year experienced, 5-year experienced, career changers, everyone.
"What about Hindi resumes?"
Right now, the builder works in English. Almost all Indian companies accept English resumes, including for Hindi-medium candidates. If you need help with resume content in Hindi, check our resume kaise banaye guide.
"Does the free version have a catch?"
The only difference between free and paid is: (1) AI Enhance is locked, (2) keyword matching against JD is locked, and (3) the free PDF has a small watermark. The templates, editor, live preview, and ATS score badge are all free. No trial period. No credit card required.
