87 Applications. Zero Callbacks. Not One.#

That was Rahul's situation. A 2025 B.Tech CS graduate from KIIT Bhubaneswar, decent CGPA (7.8), three solid projects on his resume. He applied to 87 jobs over two months, Naukri, LinkedIn Easy Apply, direct company portals. Nothing. Complete radio silence.

His resume wasn't bad. His skills weren't bad. His formatting was.

We ran his resume through our ATS checker against one of the JDs he had applied to. Score: 34 out of 100. The ATS couldn't even parse his name correctly (it was in the document header). His skills section, stuffed into a Canva two-column layout, was being read as gibberish.

He is not an exception. According to a Harvard Business Review report, 75% of resumes are auto-rejected by ATS before any human reads them. And LinkedIn's Economic Graph data shows applications per role have roughly doubled in the last two years, which means ATS filters are getting stricter, not looser.

Sound familiar? If you have been applying for weeks with nothing to show for it, your ATS score is the first thing you should check. It takes 30 seconds. And it might explain everything.

What is an ATS Score?#

Your ATS score is a number (usually out of 100) that represents how well your resume matches a specific job description. It is calculated by the ATS software that companies use to filter applications.

Here is what the score considers:

  • Keyword match, Are the skills, tools, and qualifications from the job description present in your resume?
  • Formatting, Can the ATS read your resume correctly? Are sections labelled properly?
  • Relevance, Does your experience and education align with the job requirements?
  • Completeness, Are all expected sections present (contact info, education, skills, experience)?

Important: Your ATS score changes for every job. The same resume might score 82 for a Java Developer role and 45 for a Data Analyst role. That is why you need to check your score against each job description you are applying to.

How ATS Scoring Actually Works#

Here is what actually happens when you click "Apply" on Naukri or any job portal. (Spoiler: it is less mysterious and more mechanical than you think.)

Step 1: Resume Parsing

The ATS extracts text from your resume file. It tries to identify your name, email, phone number, education, skills, and experience by looking for standard section headings and patterns.

If your resume uses tables, columns, or graphics, the parser gets confused. It might put your skills under education, or miss your contact details entirely.

Step 2: Keyword Matching

The ATS compares words in your resume against the job description. It looks for:

  • Hard skills: Python, Java, React.js, SQL, Tableau, AutoCAD
  • Certifications: AWS Certified, PMP, Google Analytics
  • Education requirements: B.Tech, MBA, specific branches
  • Soft skills: Leadership, teamwork, communication (less weight, but still scanned)

The matching is often literal. If the JD says "Machine Learning" and you wrote "ML", some systems will not match. If the JD says "Microsoft Excel" and you wrote "MS Office", you lose that keyword match.

Step 3: Scoring and Ranking

The ATS assigns a score based on how many keywords matched, how relevant your experience is, and how complete your resume is. All applicants are ranked by score. Recruiters typically look at the top 10-25% of applications.

If 200 people apply for a Software Engineer role at Infosys and you score in the bottom 50%, your resume will literally never be seen by a human. You could have the perfect skillset. Doesn't matter.

Understanding Your ATS Score Results#

Not all scores are equal. Here is what your score range means and what action to take:

Score 0-30: Critical Issues

Your resume has serious problems, likely a combination of bad formatting and missing keywords. The ATS probably cannot parse your resume correctly.

Action: You likely need to rebuild your resume from scratch using a simple, single-column format. Start with a plain Google Docs template, not a Canva design.

Score 31-60: Needs Significant Work

Your resume is partially readable by ATS, but you are missing many important keywords from the job description. You are almost certainly being filtered out.

Action: Add missing keywords to your skills section and professional summary. Check if your section headings are standard. Remove any graphics or complex formatting.

Score 61-80: Good, But Room to Improve

Your resume is ATS-compatible and has many matching keywords. You might pass the ATS filter for less competitive roles, but not for popular openings with 500+ applicants.

Action: Fine-tune keyword placement. Add missing keywords naturally into your project descriptions and summary. Check for partial matches (e.g., "JS" vs "JavaScript").

Score 81-100: Excellent

Your resume is well-optimized for this specific JD. You have a strong chance of passing the ATS filter and being seen by a recruiter.

Action: Focus on the content quality now, make sure your bullet points are impactful, your projects are well-described, and your resume tells a clear story. Also make sure your LinkedIn matches your resume.

How to Improve Your ATS Score, 10 Actionable Tips#

1. Copy Exact Keywords from the JD

Read the job description carefully. Every skill, tool, technology, and qualification they mention should appear somewhere in your resume using the exact same words.

The JD says "proficient in Python and SQL" → Your resume should say "Python" and "SQL", not "programming" and "databases."

2. Use a Single-Column Layout

Ditch the two-column resume. ATS reads left-to-right, top-to-bottom. A single column ensures everything is read in the correct order.

3. Use Standard Section Headings

Stick to: Professional Summary, Education, Technical Skills, Projects, Experience, Achievements, Certifications. Do not get creative with section names.

4. Save as Text-Based PDF

When saving from Word or Google Docs, use "Save as PDF" or "Download as PDF." Do NOT print to PDF from an image or scan your resume. The file should contain selectable text.

Test: Open your PDF and try to select and copy text. If you cannot highlight the text, the ATS cannot read it either.

5. Spell Technology Names Correctly

"JavaScript" not "Java Script." "Node.js" not "Nodejs." "PostgreSQL" not "Postgres SQL." One misspelling means zero match for that keyword.

6. Include Both Full Forms and Abbreviations

Write "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" and "Machine Learning (ML)" the first time. This way, your resume matches whether the JD uses the full form or abbreviation.

7. Quantify Everything You Can

Instead of "Improved website performance", write "Improved website load time by 40% using lazy loading and image compression." Numbers catch both ATS attention and recruiter attention.

8. Do Not Stuff Keywords Unnaturally

We have to say this because people actually do it: some candidates paste the entire JD in white text at the bottom of their resume, thinking the ATS will read it but humans won't see it. Modern ATS systems detect this and flag it as manipulation. Instant rejection. Don't be clever. Be accurate.

9. Customize for Every Job Application

Yes, every single one. "But that takes so long!", we know. At minimum, update your Professional Summary and Skills section for each JD. Those 15 minutes are worth more than sending 50 generic applications that all score 35/100.

10. Check Your Score After Every Change

After editing your resume, run it through the ATS checker again. Your score should improve. If it did not, the fix was not effective, try something different.

Best ATS Checkers Compared, An Honest Look#

We ran the same resume through every major ATS checker we could find. Here is what we found, no sugarcoating.

Here is the thing: Jobscan and Resume Worded are genuinely good products. We are not going to pretend otherwise. They have been around longer, they have massive databases, and their keyword matching is solid.

But they cost $49-50/month. That is ₹4,000+ per month. For a fresher whose monthly pocket money might be ₹3,000-5,000, that is absurd. They are also built entirely for the US/UK job market, they don't understand CGPA formats, project-heavy fresher resumes, or the difference between a TCS Ninja and TCS Digital profile.

JobRise is built for Indian job seekers, prices in INR, and each report costs just ₹69. No subscription, no gotchas. Because career tools should not cost ₹4,000/month when you are a fresher.

Real Before/After: Rahul's Story (Name Changed, Details Real)#

We mentioned Rahul at the top. Here is the full breakdown. B.Tech CS, KIIT Bhubaneswar, 2025 batch, 7.8 CGPA. Applied to 87 jobs over two months, Naukri, LinkedIn, company career pages. Zero callbacks. Not one.

Here is what his resume looked like when he first checked his ATS score with us.

Before (ATS Score: 34/100)

What was broken:

  • Used a Canva template with two columns and a sidebar (the single biggest issue)
  • Skills listed with rating bars (Java: 4/5 stars), ATS cannot read graphic bars. At all.
  • Professional summary said "Hard-working individual looking for a challenging opportunity", zero keywords from any JD
  • Projects section said "Made a chat application" with no technologies listed
  • Section headings were "About Me", "What I Know", "My Work", the ATS couldn't categorize any of it
  • File was saved as a scanned image PDF (his friend had "designed" it for him)

After (ATS Score: 89/100)

What he changed (took about 45 minutes):

  • Switched to a single-column Google Docs template. Boring? Yes. Effective? Massively.
  • Listed skills as plain text: "Java, Python, React.js, Node.js, MongoDB, SQL, Git, REST APIs"
  • Professional summary now included actual keywords: "B.Tech Computer Science graduate with expertise in Java, React.js, and RESTful API development. Built 3 full-stack web applications. Seeking Software Engineer role."
  • Projects section detailed each project with tech stack and impact bullets (we have a full ATS resume format guide on how to structure this)
  • Standard section headings: "Professional Summary", "Education", "Technical Skills", "Projects"
  • Saved as a proper text-based PDF

The result: 4 interview calls in the next 2 weeks. Same person. Same skills. Same projects. Different format.

Stop Applying Blindly#

We talk to freshers every day who have sent 100, 150, 200+ applications. "Bhai, kya galat ho raha hai?" is literally the most common question.

Most of the time, the answer is simpler than they expect. Their resume is invisible to ATS. Not bad, invisible.

Check your ATS score before your next application. 30 seconds. Just ₹69. If your score is below 60, you now know exactly why the callbacks aren't coming, and you know how to fix it.

FAQ#

How much does the JobRise ATS checker cost?

Your first ATS scan is free (score + top issues). The full report with all fixes costs ₹69 one-time. If you want multiple scans for different job applications, the 3-Month Pass is ₹399 (30 uses) or ₹1299/year (120 uses).

How accurate are online ATS score checkers?

No ATS checker can perfectly replicate every company's exact ATS configuration, there are dozens of different ATS software products (Taleo, Workday, Lever, Greenhouse, Freshteam), each with slightly different algorithms. However, a good ATS checker tests for the factors that matter across ALL systems: keyword matching, formatting readability, and section structure. If you score above 80 on a quality checker, you will pass the vast majority of real ATS systems.

Should I check my ATS score for every job application?

Ideally, yes, especially for roles you really want. Different JDs use different keywords, so the same resume will score differently for different jobs. At minimum, check your score once with a representative JD in your target field, and then customize your resume for high-priority applications.

Can I use an ATS checker for Naukri and LinkedIn Easy Apply?

Absolutely. When you apply on Naukri, your uploaded resume goes through parsing and matching. When you use LinkedIn Easy Apply with a resume attachment, that file is processed by the company's ATS. Checking your score before applying on any platform improves your chances.

What ATS score should I aim for?

Aim for 80 or above. At 80+, you have a strong chance of passing the ATS filter. At 90+, you are in the top tier of applicants from a keyword and formatting perspective. Anything below 60 means significant issues that need fixing before you apply.

Does my ATS score guarantee I will get an interview?

No. ATS score determines whether your resume reaches a human recruiter. After that, the recruiter evaluates your actual qualifications, experience, and fit for the role. A high ATS score gets your foot in the door, your content and qualifications need to be strong to get the interview. Think of ATS optimization as a necessary first step, not the only step.
