HCL Doesn't Get the Attention That TCS and Infosys Get. That's Actually an Advantage for You.#

Every year, lakhs of engineering students prepare obsessively for TCS NQT and Infosys InfyTQ. YouTube is flooded with TCS interview prep videos. PrepInsta's TCS section gets 10x more traffic than their HCL section.

And that's exactly why HCL is an underrated bet.

HCL Technologies hired over 30,000 freshers in FY2025. The competition-per-seat ratio is lower than TCS and Infosys. The starting salary is comparable (in some cases better). And the interview process, while thorough, is more straightforward than what you'll face at Accenture or Cognizant.

We talked to 25+ candidates who got selected at HCL in 2024-26, from colleges like Lovely Professional University, Chandigarh University, SRM, Presidency University Bangalore, BMS College of Engineering, and several state engineering colleges across UP, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. We also spoke to 8 candidates who got rejected. Here's the full picture.

HCL's Hiring Channels, There Are Three, and They're Very Different#

1. HCL TechBee, The Early Career Program

This is HCL's unique program where they hire students after Class 12 (yes, before engineering). Students work at HCL, earn a salary, and simultaneously complete a degree from BITS Pilani or other partner universities.

TechBee is relevant if you're a 12th-pass student or know someone who is. The package starts at 2-3 LPA and increases after degree completion. We're not focusing on TechBee in this article since our readers are mostly engineering graduates, but know that it exists. If you have a younger sibling wondering about career options after 12th, HCL TechBee is worth looking at.

2. Regular Campus Hiring

The standard route. HCL visits engineering colleges during placement season, conducts an online test + interview, and hires freshers for their main IT services business.

Fresher salary: 4-4.5 LPA (base + variable + joining bonus). Some batches and roles see up to 5 LPA for specific technology tracks.

3. Off-Campus / Lateral Fresher Hiring

If HCL didn't visit your campus (which happens, they cover fewer colleges than TCS), you can apply through their careers portal, LinkedIn, or Naukri. Off-campus hiring is continuous throughout the year. The process is similar but may include an additional screening call.

A candidate from a state university in Uttar Pradesh shared: "HCL didn't come to my college. I applied off-campus through Naukri, cleared the online test, and got called for a virtual interview. Same process, same package. My college name didn't matter."

HCL Hiring Process, Step by Step#

Step 1: Online Test, Aptitude + Technical + English

Step 2: Technical Interview, CS fundamentals, programming, project discussion

Step 3: HR Interview, Standard questions, salary discussion, location preference

For some roles (especially in the HCL Software division or specific technology tracks), there may be an additional technical round focused on a specific technology. But for the mass fresher hiring pipeline, it's the three steps above.

HCL Online Test Pattern#

The online test is conducted through HCL's assessment platform or a third-party partner (varies by drive). Based on candidate reports from 2024-26:

Section 1: Quantitative Aptitude

TopicQuestions (Approx.)Time
Number systems, percentages4-5Combined
Time, speed, distance3-4Combined
Probability, permutations3-4Combined
Profit & loss, ratios3-4Combined
Data interpretation4-5Combined

Total: ~18-22 questions in 25-30 minutes

HCL's quant section is moderate difficulty, easier than TCS NQT Part B, comparable to TCS NQT Part A. Focus on speed and accuracy.

Section 2: Logical Reasoning

TopicQuestions (Approx.)Time
Seating arrangement3-4Combined
Blood relations2-3Combined
Coding-decoding3-4Combined
Syllogisms2-3Combined
Puzzles3-4Combined

Total: ~15-18 questions in 20-25 minutes

Standard logical reasoning. No surprises here if you've practiced with PrepInsta or IndiaBix.

Section 3: Verbal Ability (English)

TopicQuestions (Approx.)Time
Reading comprehension5-6Combined
Sentence correction4-5Combined
Para jumbles3-4Combined
Vocabulary3-4Combined

Total: ~15-18 questions in 20 minutes

Section 4: Technical MCQs

TopicQuestions (Approx.)Time
C/C++ output prediction4-5Combined
Java basics3-4Combined
DBMS concepts3-4Combined
OS fundamentals3-4Combined
Networking basics2-3Combined

Total: ~16-20 questions in 20-25 minutes

This section catches people off guard. While TCS and Infosys separate the coding round from the MCQ test, HCL combines technical MCQs with the aptitude test. These are output prediction questions ("What will this code print?"), concept-based questions, and SQL query results.

Overall test: ~65-80 questions in 90-100 minutes.

Cutoff: Based on candidate reports, clearing the test requires approximately 55-65% overall. No section-wise cutoff confirmed, but performing poorly in any section can pull your overall score below the threshold.

20 Most-Asked HCL Technical Interview Questions#

HCL's technical interview lasts 25-40 minutes. The style is direct, less conversational than Cognizant, more focused on "can you answer this correctly?" Based on our conversations with 25+ selected candidates:

C/C++ and Programming Basics

HCL still has a stronger C/C++ orientation than most IT companies. Multiple candidates told us they were asked C-specific questions even when they listed Java or Python as their primary language.

#QuestionKey Points
1What is the difference between malloc() and calloc() in C?malloc: allocates memory, doesn't initialize (garbage values). calloc: allocates AND initializes to zero. Both return void pointer.
2What are pointers? What is a dangling pointer?Pointer stores memory address. Dangling pointer points to memory that's been freed/deallocated, accessing it causes undefined behavior.
3Explain storage classes in C: auto, register, static, extern.auto: default, local scope. register: stored in CPU register (fast). static: retains value between function calls. extern: declared in one file, accessible in another.
4What is the difference between structure and union in C?Structure: all members have their own memory (sizeof = sum). Union: all members share memory (sizeof = largest member).
5What is a virtual function in C++?A function declared with virtual keyword in base class, can be overridden in derived class. Enables runtime polymorphism through vtable.

Java

#QuestionKey Points
6What is the difference between JDK, JRE, and JVM?JDK = JRE + development tools (compiler). JRE = JVM + libraries. JVM = runtime engine that executes bytecode.
7What is garbage collection in Java?Automatic memory management. JVM identifies and removes objects with no references. You can suggest GC with System.gc() but can't force it.
8Explain access modifiers: public, private, protected, default.public: everywhere. private: same class only. protected: same package + subclasses. default (no modifier): same package only.
9What is multithreading? How do you create a thread in Java?Multiple threads executing concurrently. Two ways: extend Thread class or implement Runnable interface. Runnable is preferred (Java doesn't support multiple inheritance).
10What is the difference between String, StringBuilder, and StringBuffer?String: immutable. StringBuilder: mutable, not thread-safe (faster). StringBuffer: mutable, thread-safe (slower). Use StringBuilder for single-threaded, StringBuffer for multi-threaded.

DBMS

#QuestionKey Points
11What are the types of keys in DBMS?Primary key (unique, not null), Foreign key (references PK), Candidate key (potential PK), Super key (set of attributes that uniquely identifies), Composite key (multiple columns).
12What is a trigger in SQL?A stored procedure that automatically executes when a specific event occurs (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE). Example: logging changes to an audit table.
13Difference between DELETE, TRUNCATE, and DROP?DELETE: removes rows (can use WHERE, logged, can rollback). TRUNCATE: removes all rows (faster, minimal logging, can't rollback easily). DROP: removes the entire table structure.
14Write a SQL query to get the 3rd highest salary.SELECT DISTINCT salary FROM Employee ORDER BY salary DESC LIMIT 1 OFFSET 2; (MySQL) or use subquery with ROW_NUMBER().

Operating Systems

#QuestionKey Points
15What is virtual memory?Technique that uses disk space as extension of RAM. Allows running programs larger than physical memory. Uses paging to swap pages between RAM and disk.
16Explain CPU scheduling algorithms.FCFS (first come, first served), SJF (shortest job first), Round Robin (time quantum), Priority Scheduling. Know pros and cons of each. Round Robin is most commonly asked.
17What is a semaphore?Synchronization mechanism to control access to shared resources. Binary semaphore (0 or 1, like mutex) and Counting semaphore (0 to N).

Project & General

#QuestionHow to Answer
18Explain your project in detail.Architecture diagram (even verbal), tech stack with reasons, your specific contribution, one challenge and solution, result. 2-3 minutes max.
19What is SDLC? Which model do you know?Software Development Life Cycle. Models: Waterfall, Agile, V-model, Spiral. Know Agile well, HCL uses Agile extensively. Explain sprints, standups, retrospectives.
20What is the difference between TCP and UDP?TCP: reliable, ordered, handshake, slower (HTTP, email). UDP: unreliable, fast, no handshake (video streaming, DNS). When asked "which would you use for X?", justify your choice.

HCL HR Interview, The "Why HCL?" Question Matters More Than You Think#

The HR round at HCL is 10-20 minutes. It's standard, but the "Why HCL?" question is where most candidates stumble because they haven't done HCL-specific research.

"Why do you want to join HCL?"

This is where you need to differentiate HCL from TCS/Infosys/Wipro. Here's what to say (and mean):

"HCL is different from other IT service companies because of its Mode 1-2-3 strategy, traditional IT services, engineering & R&D services, and products & platforms. The engineering services division, HCLTech, does significant work in embedded systems, IoT, and product engineering, areas that genuinely interest me. I also know HCL was founded by Shiv Nadar and has a strong culture of engineering innovation, not just IT outsourcing."

Facts you should know about HCL before the interview:

  • Founded by Shiv Nadar in 1976, one of the original Indian IT pioneers (before Infosys was even founded)
  • HCL has a significant Products & Platforms division (HCLSoftware), they own products like BigFix, Unica, DRYiCE
  • HCL's engineering services work on embedded systems, automotive, aerospace, not just typical IT services
  • Revenue: $13+ billion annually
  • Headquartered in Noida, not Bangalore (this shows you've done your homework)
  • Check HCL's investor page for recent quarterly results

"Tell me about yourself."

Same formula as always: Education → Skills → Best project → Career goal. Under 2 minutes. (Our interview ki taiyari guide covers this in Hindi.)

"Are you okay with working in shifts?"

Say yes. HCL serves global clients (US, Europe, APAC), which means many projects require working in different time zones. Night shifts are common in the first 1-2 years.

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

"A technical specialist in cloud/backend/fullstack [pick one] with 4-5 years of enterprise project experience, possibly leading a small team. I want to build deep expertise in one domain rather than surface-level knowledge in many."

"Do you have any questions for us?"

Ask: "What technologies do freshers typically get trained on in the first 6 months?" or "What's the learning and certification culture like at HCL?" or "I read about HCL's DRYiCE AI platform, do freshers get exposure to product engineering roles?"

HCL Salary Structure, What You Actually Take Home#

This is one of the most-searched topics, and the numbers online are often outdated or wrong. Here's the breakdown based on 2025-26 batch candidate reports and Glassdoor India:

Regular Campus Hiring

ComponentAmount (Annual)
Base salary₹3,00,000 - 3,50,000
Variable pay₹30,000 - 50,000
Joining bonus₹15,000 - 25,000 (one-time)
PF, insurance, etc.₹50,000 - 70,000
Total CTC₹4,00,000 - 4,50,000
In-hand monthly₹25,000 - 30,000

For Specific Technology Tracks (Cloud, AI, Full-Stack)

Some HCL hiring drives specifically recruit for technology-focused roles at a premium:

ComponentAmount (Annual)
Total CTC₹5,00,000 - 6,00,000
In-hand monthly₹32,000 - 38,000

These premium track roles are less common and usually go to candidates with relevant internships, certifications (AWS, Azure), or strong project portfolios.

Salary growth: Based on AmbitionBox reviews, typical HCL salary progression is:

  • Year 0: 4-4.5 LPA
  • Year 2: 5.5-7 LPA (after first promotion)
  • Year 4-5: 8-12 LPA (depending on role and technology)
  • Year 7+: 14-20 LPA (for strong performers who stay)

A 3-year HCL employee from AmbitionBox wrote: "Starting salary is average, but the hikes at HCL are better than TCS and Infosys for the first 3-4 years. My salary doubled in 3 years." Take individual reviews with a grain of salt, but the pattern across multiple reviews is consistent.

HCL-Specific Things to Know Before the Interview#

These are the details that separate a prepared candidate from a generic one:

  1. HCL's founding story. Shiv Nadar started HCL in 1976 from a Delhi barsati (rooftop apartment). At a time when hardware was dominant, HCL was among the first Indian companies to focus on software and IT. This history shows you care enough to look beyond the first Google result.

  2. Mode 1-2-3 strategy. Mode 1: core IT services. Mode 2: engineering & R&D services. Mode 3: products & platforms. Mentioning this shows you understand HCL's business model.

  3. HCLSoftware products. HCL owns several enterprise software products (after acquiring them from IBM): BigFix (endpoint management), Unica (marketing), Commerce, Connections. Knowing even one of these impresses.

  4. Supercharger program. HCL's internal upskilling and training program for freshers and junior employees. If you mention this, it shows you've done deep research.

  5. HCL has a stronger engineering services business than TCS or Infosys. Their work in automotive embedded systems, semiconductor design, and aerospace engineering is significant. If you're interested in engineering (not just IT services), mention this.

Common Mistakes at HCL Interviews#

  1. Treating HCL as "just another IT company." Interviewers can tell when you've copy-pasted your TCS interview prep. The "Why HCL?" answer should be HCL-specific, not generic "great company, want to learn" filler.

  2. Not knowing C fundamentals. Even if your resume says Java/Python, HCL has a legacy C/C++ orientation (from their engineering services roots). Basic C questions (pointers, memory allocation, storage classes) appear frequently. Revise them even if you haven't written C since 2nd year.

  3. Vague project descriptions. "I made a weather app." Okay, using what? What was the architecture? What API did you use? How did you handle errors? HCL interviewers want technical depth on your projects.

  4. Saying you don't want testing or support roles. A significant portion of HCL's fresher roles start in testing or support. Saying "I only want development" limits your chances. Show willingness to start anywhere and grow.

  5. Not asking about training programs. HCL invests significantly in fresher training (6-12 weeks depending on the role). Asking about training shows you're thinking long-term and value learning, which is what they want to hear from freshers.

Practice with AI Mock Interviews#

Out of the 25 candidates we talked to, the ones who practiced speaking their answers had noticeably better outcomes. Not because they knew more, because they communicated better under pressure.

One candidate from BMS College said: "I knew all the answers. But in the interview, when the interviewer stared at me waiting for my answer about pointers, I froze for 5 seconds. Those 5 seconds felt like an eternity. If I'd practiced saying the answer out loud 10 times before, it wouldn't have happened."

JobRise's AI Mock Interview Bot simulates a real HCL interview:

  • Choose "HCL" and get C/C++, Java, and DBMS questions matching HCL's style
  • Practice project explanation with follow-up questions
  • Get feedback on answer quality and communication clarity
