Infosys Hired 50,000 Freshers Last Year. Here's What It's Actually Like to Work There.#

Infosys is the second-largest IT services company in India by revenue and one of the top fresher employers in the country. Every year, more than 20 lakh students attempt the InfyTQ or HackWithInfy selection process. About 50,000 make it through.

For many Indian engineering graduates, Infosys is their first real job. The Mysore campus, the training program, the Narayana Murthy legacy. It all sounds prestigious. And for the most part, it is.

But like any large company, Infosys has both great aspects and frustrating ones. This guide covers everything: the hiring process, real salary data, what the culture is actually like from current and former employees, and whether Infosys is the right first step for your career.

Infosys Hiring Routes for Freshers#

Infosys uses three primary routes to hire freshers. Understanding these routes is critical because they determine your designation, salary, and starting experience.

Route 1: InfyTQ (Infosys Certification Program)

This is the mass hiring route and accounts for the majority of fresher hires.

How it works:

  1. Register on InfyTQ platform
  2. Complete the online certification courses (Python, data structures, DBMS)
  3. Pass the InfyTQ certification exam
  4. Clear the Infosys hiring rounds (test + interview)

InfyTQ Exam Pattern:

SectionTopicsDuration
Programming (MCQ)Python concepts, OOP, data types, control flow40-50 minutes
Programming (Hands-on)2 coding problems (Python/Java/C++)60-90 minutes
Database (MCQ)SQL queries, normalization, joins, ER diagrams30-40 minutes

What you get selected for:

  • Systems Engineer (SE): The standard track. CTC ₹3.6 LPA.

Route 2: HackWithInfy (Coding Competition)

This is the premium route. Top performers get the best roles and highest salaries.

How it works:

  1. Register on HackWithInfy portal
  2. Round 1: Online coding contest (3 problems, 3 hours)
  3. Round 2: Advanced coding contest (top performers from Round 1)
  4. Round 3: In-person interview (top performers from Round 2)

What you can get:

  • Digital Specialist Engineer (DSE): CTC ₹5.0-5.5 LPA. Better projects, newer technologies.
  • Power Programmer (PP): CTC ₹9.0-9.5 LPA. The best of the best. Only about 100-200 selections per year.

Difficulty level: HackWithInfy Round 1 is LeetCode medium level. Round 2 is LeetCode medium-hard. Round 3 interview tests system design basics and deep technical knowledge.

Route 3: Campus Placement

Infosys visits 400+ colleges for on-campus recruitment.

Process:

  1. Online aptitude test (on campus or remote)
  2. Technical interview
  3. HR interview

Campus hires are typically offered the SP (Systems Programmer) or SE role depending on test performance.

The Mysore Training Campus#

The Infosys Mysore campus is legendary among Indian freshers. Here's what to expect:

Duration: 12-16 weeks (varies by batch and designation)

What happens:

  • Classroom training on your assigned technology track
  • Hands-on coding projects
  • Soft skills training (communication, presentations)
  • Team projects and assessments
  • Corporate orientation

The campus itself:

  • 337 acres, one of the largest corporate training facilities in the world
  • Swimming pool, gym, basketball/tennis courts, food courts
  • Hostel-style accommodation
  • Movie theater, library, and recreation facilities

What people say: Most freshers describe the Mysore experience as "the best part of joining Infosys." The facilities are world-class, the training is well-structured, and the bonding with batchmates creates lifelong friendships.

The catch: Training is paid (you get your salary during training), but you're assessed throughout. Poor performance during training can lead to extended training or, in rare cases, offer rescission. Take the training seriously.

Infosys Work Culture: The Real Assessment#

The Good

1. Training and learning opportunities Beyond Mysore, Infosys has Lex (now InfyTQ platform) for continuous learning, certification reimbursements, and internal courses. The company invests in skill development more than most competitors.

2. Brand recognition "I work at Infosys" carries weight in India and internationally. The brand opens doors for visa applications, loans, and future job switches.

3. Diversity and inclusion Infosys hires from a wide range of colleges, not just IITs/NITs. Engineers from tier-2 and tier-3 colleges make up a significant portion of the workforce. This creates a level playing field.

4. Infrastructure Infosys offices are genuinely nice. Clean workspaces, good cafeterias, gym facilities, and well-maintained campuses. The Bangalore and Pune offices are particularly well-rated by employees.

5. Onsite opportunities Like TCS, Infosys has significant client-facing work abroad. US, UK, Australia, and Europe onsite postings are available, usually after 2-3 years.

The Challenges

1. Project allocation roulette The biggest frustration among Infosys freshers is project allocation. After Mysore training, you might get a Java Spring Boot project or a 15-year-old mainframe project. You have very little control over this.

2. Salary stagnation at junior levels Hikes in the first 3-4 years are modest (6-10% annually). Many employees feel underpaid compared to product company peers.

3. Client-dependent work Most of your work is for a specific client. The client's requirements, timelines, and expectations dictate your day. Some clients are demanding; others are relaxed. You can't choose.

4. Bench culture Between projects, employees go to "bench." This can last from 2 weeks to 3-4 months. While you're paid, the uncertainty is stressful, and prolonged bench time doesn't look great on your internal record.

5. Bureaucracy at scale 320,000 employees means layers of management, approval processes, and corporate policies. Getting things done quickly is not Infosys's strength. If you thrive in fast-moving environments, this will frustrate you.

6. Location assignment You might want Bangalore but get posted to Bhubaneswar or Chandigarh. Location preferences are noted but not guaranteed. After project allocation, your city is determined by where the client team sits.

Glassdoor and AmbitionBox Ratings

Glassdoor (40,000+ reviews):

  • Overall: 3.8/5
  • Work-life balance: 3.7/5
  • Salary: 3.1/5
  • Career growth: 3.3/5

AmbitionBox:

  • Overall: 3.8/5
  • Work-life balance: 3.7/5
  • Salary: 3.2/5
  • Career growth: 3.4/5

Pattern in reviews: The most common positive theme is "work-life balance and learning opportunities." The most common negative theme is "low salary and slow career growth."

Infosys vs. TCS: The Great Debate#

This is the question every Indian engineering fresher asks. Here's an honest comparison:

FactorInfosysTCS
Fresher Salary (Standard)₹3.6 LPA₹3.36 LPA
Premium Track Salary₹5-9.5 LPA (DSE/PP)₹7-7.5 LPA (Digital)
TrainingMysore campus (legendary)ILP (very good)
Brand ValueVery HighHighest
Work-Life BalanceGood (varies)Good (varies)
Technology ExposureModerateModerate
Onsite OpportunitiesManyMost
Employee Count320K600K
Promotion SpeedSlowSlow

Verdict: Both are very similar in most aspects. Infosys has a slightly better fresher salary and a better premium track (PP at ₹9.5 LPA is hard to beat). TCS has more employees, more projects, and arguably more onsite opportunities. For most freshers, the difference is marginal. Choose based on which one gives you an offer first.

Should You Join Infosys?#

Yes, if:

  • You want a stable first job with excellent training
  • You value the Mysore campus experience
  • You're from a tier-2/3 college and want a brand name on your resume
  • You plan to use it as a 2-3 year stepping stone
  • You scored well enough for DSE or PP tracks

Consider alternatives if:

  • You have product company offers (the salary difference is massive)
  • You want to work on specific, modern technologies from day one
  • You're impatient about salary growth
  • You're highly skilled in a niche area where you can earn much more elsewhere

The smart strategy: Join Infosys (especially DSE/PP track), get the training, build your resume, learn enterprise-level development practices, and switch to a product company after 2-3 years at 2-3x the salary. Hundreds of thousands of Indian engineers have followed this exact playbook.

Infosys Preparation: Common Mistakes#

Mistake 1: Not using the InfyTQ platform Infosys provides free courses on InfyTQ. Many candidates ignore these and prepare from other sources. The exam is based on these courses. Use them.

Mistake 2: Ignoring SQL Many B.Tech students focus only on coding and skip SQL preparation. DBMS/SQL is a significant part of both the InfyTQ exam and technical interviews.

Mistake 3: Not practicing coding under time pressure Knowing how to solve a problem and solving it in 30 minutes are different skills. Practice with a timer.

Mistake 4: Generic answers in HR rounds "I want to join Infosys because it's a good company" gets you no points. Be specific about the training program, the technology you're interested in, or a recent Infosys initiative you read about.

Mistake 5: Not preparing your project explanation Your final year project is guaranteed to come up. Practice a 3-minute explanation: what you built, what tech you used, what challenges you faced, and what you learned.
