Salary Benchmarks for Tech Jobs in India: 2026 Edition
"Am I being underpaid?"
This is the most common question in every tech WhatsApp group, Reddit thread, and LinkedIn DM. And the most common answer is: "It depends."
That answer is useless. You need numbers. Real numbers. Not some motivational poster about "money isn't everything." You want to know: what should someone with my skills, in my role, in my city, with my experience level, be earning in 2026?
This guide gives you exactly that. We compiled salary data from AmbitionBox, Glassdoor India, Levels.fyi, Blind, LinkedIn salary insights, and conversations with 100+ tech professionals across India. This is the most current salary benchmark data for the Indian tech market as of early 2026.
Use it to negotiate your next offer. Use it to plan your career switch. Use it to know if you need to ask for a raise.
How to Read This Guide#
For every role, we'll show:
- Fresher (0-1 years): Campus hires and first job
- Junior (1-3 years): Post first job, building expertise
- Mid (3-6 years): Solid skills, some leadership
- Senior (6-10 years): Deep expertise, team management
- Staff/Principal (10+ years): Architecture and strategy level
All figures are annual CTC in LPA (Lakhs Per Annum). In-hand is typically 65-75% of CTC after PF, taxes, and deductions.
Company types:
- Service: TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Cognizant, Capgemini
- Product (Indian): Flipkart, Razorpay, CRED, Meesho, PhonePe, Swiggy
- Product (MNC): Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Netflix
- Startup: Series A to Series C funded startups
- BFSI: Banks, fintech (except pure product companies)
Software Development Engineer (SDE) / Full-Stack Developer#
The most common tech role in India. Highest hiring volume.
Fresher SDE Salaries (0-1 Year)
| Company Type | CTC Range |
|---|---|
| IT Services (TCS Ninja, Infosys PP, Wipro Elite) | 3.3-4.5 LPA |
| IT Services Premium (TCS Digital, Infosys DSE, Wipro Turbo) | 6-7.5 LPA |
| Indian Product Companies (Tier 2: Zoho, Freshworks) | 6-10 LPA |
| Indian Product Companies (Tier 1: Flipkart, Razorpay) | 12-22 LPA |
| MNC Product (Google, Microsoft, Amazon) | 18-45 LPA |
| Funded Startups | 6-15 LPA |
| Early-Stage Startups | 3-8 LPA |
Key insight: The gap between service company freshers (3.5 LPA) and product company freshers (15-20 LPA) is massive. The difference? DSA skills and system design fundamentals. Same degree, same colleges sometimes, 5x salary difference.
SDE Salary by Experience
| Experience | Service Company | Indian Product | MNC Product | Startup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0-1 yr | 3.5-4.5 LPA | 10-18 LPA | 20-45 LPA | 6-15 LPA |
| 1-3 yr | 5-8 LPA | 15-28 LPA | 30-55 LPA | 10-25 LPA |
| 3-6 yr | 8-15 LPA | 25-45 LPA | 45-80 LPA | 18-40 LPA |
| 6-10 yr | 14-25 LPA | 40-70 LPA | 65-1.2 Cr | 30-65 LPA |
| 10+ yr | 20-40 LPA | 55-1 Cr | 80 LPA-2 Cr | 50-1 Cr |
Biggest salary jumps happen:
- First company switch (50-100% increase common)
- Moving from services to product companies (80-150% increase)
- Promotion to Staff/Principal Engineer at product companies
Data Science / Machine Learning Engineer#
The most hyped role in India right now. Salaries vary wildly based on actual ML skills vs just having "Data Science" in the title.
Data Science Salaries by Experience
| Experience | Service Company | Product Company | MNC | Startup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0-1 yr | 4-6 LPA | 10-18 LPA | 18-35 LPA | 6-14 LPA |
| 1-3 yr | 6-12 LPA | 16-30 LPA | 28-50 LPA | 12-25 LPA |
| 3-6 yr | 10-20 LPA | 28-50 LPA | 40-75 LPA | 20-40 LPA |
| 6-10 yr | 18-30 LPA | 45-75 LPA | 60-1.2 Cr | 35-65 LPA |
| 10+ yr | 25-45 LPA | 60-1 Cr | 80 LPA-1.5 Cr | 50-90 LPA |
Important distinction: There's a big difference between "Data Analyst" (SQL + Excel + dashboards, lower pay) and "ML Engineer" (builds and deploys models, higher pay). Many companies call both "Data Science."
Hot skills that command premium in 2026:
- LLM fine-tuning and deployment
- MLOps (model monitoring, CI/CD for ML)
- GenAI application development
- Computer Vision (still strong demand)
- NLP/NLU (especially multilingual for Indian markets)
DevOps / SRE / Cloud Engineer#
One of the fastest-growing roles in India. Every company needs infrastructure.

| 3-6 yr | 10-20 LPA | 22-40 LPA | 38-65 LPA | 18-35 LPA |
| 6-10 yr | 16-28 LPA | 35-60 LPA | 55-1 Cr | 28-55 LPA |
| 10+ yr | 22-40 LPA | 50-80 LPA | 70 LPA-1.3 Cr | 40-75 LPA |
Key skills that boost salary:
- Kubernetes (production-level, not just tutorials)
- Terraform / Infrastructure as Code
- AWS / GCP / Azure (certifications add ₹1-3 LPA)
- CI/CD pipeline design
- Security + DevOps (DevSecOps) pays 15-20% premium
Product Manager#
Non-engineering role that pays engineering-level (or higher) salaries. Very competitive to get into.
Product Manager Salaries by Experience
| Experience | Startup | Indian Product | MNC |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-2 yr (APM) | 8-15 LPA | 12-20 LPA | 18-35 LPA |

| 3-6 yr | 7-14 LPA | 18-32 LPA | 28-50 LPA |
| 6-10 yr | 12-22 LPA | 28-48 LPA | 40-70 LPA |
| 10+ yr | 18-35 LPA | 40-65 LPA | 55-90 LPA |
Salary boosters for QA:
- Automation skills (Selenium, Cypress, Playwright) pay 30-50% more than manual testing
- Performance testing (JMeter, Gatling) is niche and pays well
- SDET roles (at product companies) pay almost the same as SDE roles
Frontend Developer#
Separate from full-stack because the market treats them differently in India.
Frontend Developer Salaries
| Experience | Service | Product | MNC |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-1 yr | 3.5-5 LPA | 8-15 LPA | 15-30 LPA |
| 1-3 yr | 5-10 LPA | 14-25 LPA | 25-45 LPA |
| 3-6 yr | 8-16 LPA | 22-40 LPA | 35-60 LPA |
| 6-10 yr | 14-25 LPA | 35-55 LPA | 50-85 LPA |
Hot frontend skills in 2026:
- React (still dominant in India)

Backend Developer#
Companies increasingly separate backend roles, especially for system design and API work.
Backend Developer Salaries
| Experience | Service | Product | MNC |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-1 yr | 3.5-5 LPA | 10-16 LPA | 18-35 LPA |
| 1-3 yr | 5-10 LPA | 15-26 LPA | 28-48 LPA |
| 3-6 yr | 9-17 LPA | 24-42 LPA | 40-65 LPA |
| 6-10 yr | 15-26 LPA | 38-60 LPA | 55-95 LPA |
Backend specialists command premium for:
- Distributed systems (Kafka, message queues, microservices)
- High-scale systems (millions of requests per second)
- Go or Rust expertise (niche, growing, pays well)
- Database optimization (PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch deep expertise)
Cybersecurity#
Growing demand, limited supply. Good salary growth potential.
Cybersecurity Salaries
| Experience | Service/Consulting | Product | MNC |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-1 yr | 4-7 LPA | 8-14 LPA | 12-25 LPA |
| 1-3 yr | 7-14 LPA | 12-24 LPA | 22-40 LPA |
| 3-6 yr | 12-22 LPA | 20-38 LPA | 35-60 LPA |
| 6-10 yr | 20-35 LPA | 35-55 LPA | 50-85 LPA |
Certifications that boost cybersecurity salaries:
- CISSP (₹3-5 LPA premium)
- CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker)
- OSCP (highly valued for penetration testing roles)
- AWS/Azure Security specialty certifications
City-Wise Salary Differences#
Same role, same experience, different city: how much does it change?
Salary Index (Bangalore = 100)
| City | Salary Index | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bangalore | 100 | Highest tech salaries, highest competition |
| Mumbai | 95-100 | Close to Bangalore, especially for fintech |
| Delhi NCR (Gurgaon, Noida) | 90-95 | Strong startup ecosystem, lower than Bangalore |
| Hyderabad | 85-95 | Growing fast, approaching Bangalore levels |
| Pune | 85-90 | Strong IT presence, lower cost of living |
| Chennai | 80-88 | Good for specific companies (Zoho, Freshworks) |
| Kolkata | 70-80 | Fewer opportunities, lower salaries |
| Jaipur, Indore, Ahmedabad | 65-75 | Growing but still catching up |
| Remote (India) | 85-100 | Product companies often pay Bangalore rates for remote |
Important trend for 2026: Remote-first product companies are increasingly paying location-independent salaries. If you can work for a Bangalore-based product company from Jaipur, you get Bangalore salary with Jaipur expenses. That's the sweet spot.
How to Use These Benchmarks in Salary Negotiations#
Step 1: Find Your Exact Position
Identify your: role + experience level + company type + city. Find the corresponding range in the tables above.
Step 2: Assess Your Position Within the Range
- Are you average for your level? Aim for the middle of the range
- Do you have in-demand skills (cloud, ML, specific frameworks)? Aim for the upper end
- Switching from service to product company? You can target the product company range even if your current salary is much lower
Step 3: Use the Data in Conversations
"Based on my research from AmbitionBox and industry benchmarks, the market rate for a [role] with [X years] experience in [city] is in the range of ₹[X]-₹[Y] LPA. Given my skills in [specific areas], I'm looking at the higher end of that range."
This is much more convincing than "I want more money" or "my friend gets paid more."
Step 4: Consider Total Compensation
CTC is not the only number. Also compare:
- Base salary (fixed component)
- Variable pay (what percentage of CTC?)
- ESOPs/RSUs (stock options, especially at product companies)
- Joining bonus
- Insurance (family coverage, top-up options)
- Learning budget
- WFH policy
A 15 LPA CTC with 3 LPA in RSUs that vest over 4 years might be worth more than an 18 LPA CTC with no equity, depending on the company's growth trajectory.
Salary Growth Strategies: How to Move Up Faster#
Strategy 1: Switch Companies Every 2-3 Years
The data is clear: people who switch companies every 2-3 years earn 30-50% more over a decade than people who stay at one company. Annual hikes (7-12%) simply can't match the 30-60% jump you get when switching.
Caveat: Don't switch every 6 months. That looks unstable on a resume. 2-3 year stints are the sweet spot.
Strategy 2: Move from Services to Product
The single biggest salary multiplier for Indian tech professionals. An engineer at 8 LPA at TCS can move to 18-22 LPA at a product company with the right preparation (DSA + system design + 2 years experience).
Timeline: 6-12 months of preparation while working. LeetCode (150+ problems), system design basics, and a few solid projects.
Strategy 3: Specialize in a Niche
Generalists are replaceable. Specialists command premium.
- "I'm a backend developer" = average salary
- "I'm a backend developer specializing in high-throughput financial transaction systems using Go and Kafka" = 30-50% premium
Pick a niche that: (a) interests you, (b) has growing demand, and (c) has limited supply of experts.
Strategy 4: Get the Right Certifications
Not all certifications matter. The ones that do:
- AWS Solutions Architect (₹1-3 LPA premium)
- Google Cloud Professional (similar to AWS)
- Kubernetes (CKA/CKAD) (strong demand for DevOps roles)
- PMP (for those moving toward management)
- Stanford/MIT online programs (for the resume signal, more than the knowledge)
Skip: most Udemy certificates, random online certifications that nobody recognizes.
Strategy 5: Build a Public Profile
Tech professionals with a strong GitHub profile, good LinkedIn presence, or a tech blog consistently negotiate better offers. It's harder to lowball someone who has visible proof of their skills.
Write about what you know. Contribute to open source. Answer questions on Stack Overflow. Share your projects. This compounds over time.
The Bottom Line#
Salary in tech is not random. It follows patterns:
- Product companies pay 2-5x more than service companies for the same skills
- Specialization pays better than generalization
- Company switching beats waiting for annual hikes
- Bangalore pays the most, but remote roles are closing the gap
- Certifications and public profiles give you negotiation power
Know your market rate. Use data, not feelings. Negotiate confidently.
