Austin has been the surprise tech winner of the 2020s. What started as "tech bros fleeing California" has turned into a real hub with Tesla HQ, Google, Apple, Indeed, Oracle, and a strong startup ecosystem.
The big draw is no state income tax and lower cost of living. But the pay catch-up has been faster than most cities. In 2026, Austin pay is roughly 85% of Bay Area pay for the same level, but take-home is often higher.
New Grad Pay in Austin#
A new grad role in Austin 2026 starts around $150K to $200K total comp.
Google Austin L3: $190K. Apple Austin ICT2: $170K. Amazon Austin SDE I: $175K. Indeed: $165K. Tesla: $180K with stock variance. Local startups: $130K to $160K.
The smaller spread between new grad pay across companies is one reason Austin feels less stressful than the Bay Area for early-career engineers.

Mid-Level in Austin#
Three to five years experience:
Google L4 Austin: $290K. Apple ICT3 Austin: $260K. Amazon SDE II Austin: $235K. Indeed mid-level: $220K. Tesla mid: $250K with options upside.
The gap between Austin and Bay Area at mid-level is about 15% to 20%. Compared to Seattle, Austin is 10% lower on average. Compared to NYC FAANG, Austin is 15% lower.
But factor in zero state tax and lower rent, and the gap closes quickly.
Senior Engineers in Austin#
Five to nine years experience:
Google L5 Austin: $425K. Apple ICT4: $375K. Amazon SDE III: $335K. Tesla senior: $400K with serious stock variance. Smaller companies: $250K to $300K.
At senior level, Austin pay is competitive enough that engineers do not feel underpaid compared to the coasts. Many senior engineers who moved from California in 2020-2022 net more after the tax savings.
Staff Engineers in Austin#
Staff is where the AI/ML talent in Austin has pushed pay up. Tesla in particular has been spending big on autonomy and FSD engineers.
Google L6 Austin: $620K. Apple ICT5: $560K. Tesla staff: $550K to $850K depending on stock. Amazon Principal: $480K.
The Tesla stock variance is the wild card. In years when TSLA runs, staff engineers there can clear $1M. In years when it doesn't, the package is closer to $600K.
Tesla Pay Pattern#
Tesla deserves its own section because the pay structure is different from FAANG.
Tesla pays lower base salaries (often 10% to 15% below FAANG) but heavier stock. The stock vests over four years and can move 50%+ year-over-year. If you joined Tesla as a senior in 2024 at $80 stock price, you are sitting on great gains. If you joined in 2022 at $300, you have flat to negative.
Tesla also expects 50+ hour weeks. The pay reflects high expectations on output.
Cost of Living Austin#
Austin has gotten more expensive but is still cheaper than the coasts. A 2-bedroom apartment in central Austin: $2,400 to $3,200. A 3-bedroom house in a good suburb: $550K to $850K. North Austin (Cedar Park, Round Rock) is cheaper.
Property tax in Texas is high (1.8% to 2.5% depending on county), which partly offsets the no-state-income-tax advantage. But on $400K total comp, you still net $30K to $40K more in Austin than California.
Groceries, gas, and dining are slightly below the national average.
Remote FAANG with Austin Base#
A common 2026 pattern: take a remote-friendly FAANG role that allows Austin residence and keep coastal pay.
Some companies (Meta in particular) have Austin-specific salary bands that are slightly below SF. Some (Google, Apple) have Austin offices with their own bands. Some startups (Stripe, Anthropic, GitLab) pay the same salary regardless of location.
If you can negotiate a "SF Bay Area salary, Austin residence" deal, you win. The post-tax math is the best of all worlds.
Austin Startup Scene#
Austin's startup ecosystem in 2026 includes Indeed, Bumble, RetailMeNot, Cloudflare, Spotify (small office), Atlassian, and hundreds of mid-size B2B startups. Pay at mid-size startups ranges from $200K to $400K depending on stage.
Series A and B startups offer big equity but lower base. Series C and D offer better cash but smaller equity slugs. Most engineers should optimize for cash plus learning at this stage of their career.
Negotiating in Austin#
Austin has less competing-offer culture than the Bay Area but it is growing. The same negotiation tactics work:
- Get 2-3 competing offers
- Use the highest as your anchor
- Ask for stock-heavy packages if you believe in the company
- Negotiate level upfront. Going from L4 to L5 is worth $150K+
Recruiters in Austin generally have slightly less flexibility than coastal recruiters, but a 10% to 15% bump on a written offer is achievable.
Why Engineers Pick Austin#
Top reasons people move to Austin in 2026:
- No state income tax (saves $25K to $50K per year)
- House prices that allow ownership at staff level
- Warmer weather and outdoor culture
- Easier daily life with cars and parking
- Growing AI/robotics ecosystem (Tesla, NVIDIA Austin)
Reasons not to: summer is brutal (3 months over 100°F), property tax is high, and the political environment is different from coastal cities. Make sure you've spent at least a week here before relocating.
Career Path Tip#
A good 2026 path for someone optimizing for total wealth:
- Start at FAANG Austin out of college: $190K
- Mid-level FAANG Austin at 3 years: $290K
- Senior FAANG Austin at 6 years: $425K
- Staff Tesla or FAANG Austin at 10 years: $620K
- Buy a paid-off house with the tax savings
Total net worth at 35 in this path can clear $2.5M, mostly because of high savings rate and Texas tax advantage. The same path in San Francisco yields less because of higher housing and higher taxes.
Use our interview prep tools to land Austin FAANG offers. The interview loops are the same as other locations, but local recruiters have started preferring candidates already in Texas.
Austin in 2026 is one of the best risk-adjusted tech cities in the US. Pay is high enough, taxes are low, and the cost of living lets you actually save. For engineers who do not need the Bay Area density, it is a strong play.
