New York pays well, but the real story is that NYC has two different software engineer markets stacked on top of each other. There is FAANG NYC (Google, Meta, Amazon offices in Hudson Yards and Midtown) which pays West Coast money. And there is finance tech (Citadel, Two Sigma, Jane Street, Hudson River Trading) which can pay double FAANG.

If you only look at one market, you might leave $200K on the table. Here is what 2026 pay looks like for software engineers across NYC.

FAANG New Grad in NYC#

A new grad role at Google NYC, Meta NYC, or Amazon NYC starts around $200K to $230K total comp in 2026. Base salary is $130K to $160K, sign-on bonus $30K to $50K, and stock vests over four years.

Google L3 in NYC averages $215K. Meta E3 hits $225K. Amazon SDE I New York averages $200K. The numbers are slightly higher than other Amazon locations because NYC has a market adjustment.

For new grads in NYC, the smart move is to start at a FAANG and pivot to finance after two years once you have proven you can write production code.

Finance Tech Pays Different#

Jane Street pays new grads $325K+ total comp in 2026. Citadel and Citadel Securities pay $300K+. Two Sigma pays $275K+. Hudson River Trading and Tower Research are similar. These are new grads, not seniors.

The catch is that finance tech interviews are brutal. Expect five to seven rounds heavy on algorithms, math, and probability. Most candidates who get FAANG offers fail finance interviews on the first try. You need to study specifically for it.

If you can pass, the pay difference is life-changing. A new grad at Jane Street will out-earn most FAANG senior engineers in their first year.

Mid-Level FAANG NYC#

Three to five years experience puts you in the mid-level bucket. Google L4 NYC averages $325K. Meta E4 hits $340K. Amazon SDE II averages $275K. Compared to Seattle, NYC pay for the same level is about 10% higher to offset the cost of living.

Mid-Level Finance Tech NYC#

At three to five years, a finance tech engineer in NYC clears $500K to $700K total comp. Most of that is performance bonus, which can fluctuate but in normal years is huge.

Jane Street mid-level: $550K to $700K. Citadel mid-level: $500K to $650K. Two Sigma mid-level: $450K to $600K. These come with much higher stress and longer hours, but the pay reflects that.

Senior Engineer NYC#

A senior software engineer at Google NYC averages $475K total comp. Meta E5 NYC hits $510K. Amazon SDE III NYC averages $410K.

At senior level, finance tech engineers easily make $700K to $1M. Top performers at Citadel and Jane Street can clear $1.5M in a good year, mostly from bonus.

Staff Engineer NYC#

Staff is where things stretch. Google L6 NYC averages $750K. Meta E6 NYC hits $820K. Amazon Principal SDE NYC averages $700K.

In finance, staff equivalent (Senior Quant Dev, Vice President, etc.) clears $1M to $2.5M depending on the firm and year. The very best technical people at Jane Street and Citadel can make $3M+ in big bonus years.

Cost of Living in NYC#

NYC is expensive. A 1-bedroom in Manhattan averages $4,500/month in 2026. Brooklyn is $3,200. Queens around $2,500. Property prices for a 2-bedroom condo in Manhattan start at $1.5M.

State and city income tax is 8.875% combined for $200K+ earners. That is significantly more than no-tax states like Washington or Florida. On a $400K total comp, you pay roughly $35K more in NYC than Seattle.

Take-home pay on $400K in NYC is around $235K after federal, state, city, and Social Security. The same $400K in Seattle nets around $265K.

Why NYC Still Wins for Many#

Despite the taxes, NYC has advantages:

  1. Best finance tech market in the world
  2. Public transit means no car payment
  3. Walkable city for those who hate driving
  4. Easy travel hub for Europe and the rest of the US
  5. Culture, restaurants, and social life

If you do not love NYC the city, the tax math will make you bitter. If you love it, you accept the cost as part of the deal.

Pivoting from FAANG to Finance#

The most lucrative path in NYC tech is:

  1. Get a FAANG new grad offer for stability
  2. Spend 2-3 years building strong systems experience
  3. Study competitive programming (Codeforces, LeetCode) on the side
  4. Interview at Jane Street, Citadel, Two Sigma
  5. Job-hop for 2-3x pay increase

The engineers who do this aggressively can clear $1M total comp by age 30. The ones who stay at one FAANG often get to $500K and plateau.

Use our LinkedIn optimizer to make sure your profile attracts both FAANG and finance recruiters. The keywords for each are different.

What to Negotiate in NYC#

NYC offers are negotiable, but the levers differ by company:

FAANG NYC: stock refresh, level (L3 vs L4 is a $100K difference), sign-on bonus.

Finance tech: guaranteed bonus year one, sign-on bonus, level, and start date. Performance bonus you cannot negotiate, but the guarantee year one you can.

Always have a competing offer. Recruiters in NYC will tell you the offer is "best and final" until you forward them a higher number from another company. Then suddenly there is more room.

The NYC tech market in 2026 is the most fragmented in the US. FAANG, finance, and startup pay each follow different rules. Pick your lane based on what you optimize for (stability, max pay, learning) and lean in.
