The Bay Area is still where software engineer pay peaks. In 2026, the gap between Bay Area and second-tier cities has narrowed but the top of the market is still here. If you want to make $1M+ as a senior engineer, the Bay Area is the easiest place to do it.
The flip side is that Bay Area cost of living and California taxes eat a lot of that paycheck. The net take-home difference between SF and Seattle is smaller than you think.
Here is the real pay data for 2026.
New Grad Bay Area#
A new grad role at Google Mountain View, Meta Menlo Park, or Apple Cupertino starts at $215K to $250K total comp in 2026.
Google L3: $230K. Meta E3: $245K. Apple ICT2: $210K. Amazon SDE I SF: $215K. Stripe L1: $235K. OpenAI new grad: $310K (way ahead due to massive stock packages).
The real outliers are AI companies. OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI pay new grads $300K to $400K total comp because their stock is worth so much and they want to lock in talent.

Mid-Level Bay Area#
Three to five years experience: Google L4 averages $360K. Meta E4 hits $380K. Apple ICT3 averages $315K. Stripe L2 averages $370K. OpenAI mid-level can hit $700K+ thanks to stock.
The standout in 2026 is AI infrastructure roles. ML engineers at OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, and Inflection are making $500K+ at mid-level. Some companies are paying $700K for ICs with strong PyTorch and CUDA experience.
Senior Engineer Bay Area#
Five to nine years and a senior title:
Google L5: $530K. Meta E5: $580K. Apple ICT4: $445K. Stripe L3: $580K. Amazon SDE III SF: $450K. OpenAI senior: $1M+ (yes really).
The AI gold rush has bent the salary curve. Anthropic and OpenAI senior MLEs frequently get $1.2M to $1.8M packages. Even Google has been forced to bump research engineer pay to compete.
Staff Engineer Bay Area#
Staff level, 9+ years experience, leading multiple teams:
Google L6 Staff: $850K. Meta E6 Staff: $920K. Apple ICT5: $750K. Stripe L4: $900K. OpenAI/Anthropic staff: $1.5M to $2.5M.
The very top of the staff market in 2026 is AI research scientists and applied research engineers. The $5M+ packages you read about at OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI are mostly for these roles.
Principal and Distinguished#
Past staff, you get into Principal (L7), Distinguished (L8), and Fellow (L9) tiers. These are rare. There are probably fewer than 200 L8+ engineers across all of Big Tech.
L7 Principal averages $1.3M to $2M. L8 Distinguished averages $2M to $4M. L9 Fellow can clear $5M with stock refreshes.
Bay Area Cost Reality#
California state tax hits hard. Top marginal rate is 13.3% for income over $1M, with brackets adding up fast.
On $500K total comp:
- Federal tax: ~$130K
- California state: ~$45K
- FICA: ~$20K
- Take-home: ~$305K
In Seattle, the same $500K nets ~$345K. That is a $40K difference per year. Over 10 years, that is $400K more in your pocket just from being in Washington.
Housing: a 2-bedroom in San Francisco rents for $4,200 to $5,500. Mountain View, Palo Alto, Menlo Park: $4,500 to $6,500. Buying a 3-bedroom house in Palo Alto starts at $3M.
Why People Still Move to the Bay Area#
Despite taxes and rent:
- Density of opportunities. You can interview at five top companies in a week without leaving the city.
- Network effects. Most senior engineers you meet either started a company or know someone who did.
- Career velocity. If you want to be staff in 6 years instead of 10, the Bay Area is the fastest path.
- AI ecosystem. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, xAI, Mistral, Inflection are all here.
When to Leave the Bay Area#
After staff level, many engineers move to Seattle, Austin, or Miami to keep their FAANG pay but lose the state tax bill. Going from $800K in SF to $800K in Seattle is roughly $90K extra in take-home per year.
Remote-friendly companies like Stripe, GitLab, Anthropic, and many startups will keep your Bay Area salary even if you move (subject to their geo policies). The tax savings on a remote move can fund a house in Texas in 5 years.
Negotiating Bay Area Offers#
Bay Area recruiters have the widest bands of any market. A senior engineer with two competing offers can often negotiate $100K+ in stock without manager approval.
Top leverage points:
- Competing offer with specific numbers (best lever, period)
- Level. L4 vs L5 at Google is $150K+ difference
- Stock grant size. Sign-on you can negotiate, but RSU grant is the big one
- Refresh schedule. Some companies refresh annually, some every 18 months
Always interview with three to five companies in parallel even if you only want one. The offer letters become negotiation tools. Use our resume tailoring tool to customize for each.
What 2026 Looks Like#
The Bay Area in 2026 is bifurcated. AI companies pay 50% to 200% more than traditional Big Tech for equivalent levels. If you have ML experience, the time to interview is now. If you have classic backend or systems experience, your best bet is FAANG plus a stock-heavy startup.
For new grads picking between Seattle and Bay Area, run the take-home math carefully. Seattle wins on net pay. The Bay Area wins on career options. Pick based on what stage you are at and what you optimize for.
