You have a few years of sourcing experience, but your applications for US recruiter roles are vanishing into the void. The American hiring process has its own rules, and a generic resume will not get you past the first screen. Here is how to fix that.
Understand what US employers actually want#
Forget the idea that recruiting is just posting jobs and scheduling calls. US hiring managers, especially in tech and high-growth companies, are obsessed with data. They want to see your direct impact on the business.
This means your resume needs numbers. How many hires did you make per quarter? What was your time-to-fill? Did you improve the quality of hire? If you can not measure it, you will have a hard time proving it. They also care deeply about your experience with specific tools: Greenhouse, Lever, or Workday are common. Familiarity with LinkedIn Recruiter is often a baseline expectation.
For a deeper look at what specific job posts are asking for, run a few descriptions through the free JD decoder tool. It will pull out the hard skills and software they mention most.
Fix your resume for applicant tracking systems#
Most US companies use an ATS to filter resumes before a human ever sees them. Your document must be machine-readable first, human-friendly second.
- Use a clean, single-column layout. No tables, graphics, or text boxes.
- Save it as a .docx or simple PDF unless the application specifies otherwise.
- Include a "Skills" section listing specific ATS platforms (Greenhouse, iCIMS), sourcing tools (SeekOut, hireEZ), and core competencies (full-cycle recruiting, diversity sourcing, offer negotiation).
- Use standard section headings: "Work Experience," "Education," "Skills."
- Mirror the language from the job description. If they say "stakeholder management," use that exact phrase.
You can test your current resume's ATS compatibility with the free ATS checker before you send it out.
Tailor your experience bullet points#
This is where most international candidates fail. US resumes are achievement-based, not task-based. "Responsible for recruiting" says nothing. You need to show the result of your work.
Weak bullet: Managed full-cycle recruitment for engineering roles.
Strong bullet: Reduced average time-to-fill for senior software engineers from 62 to 38 days by implementing a structured interview process and building a targeted pipeline of 500+ passive candidates.
See the difference? The second one uses a specific metric (38 days), a clear action (implemented a structured process), and a quantifiable result (500+ candidates). Do this for every role. Aim for 3-5 bullets per job.
Prepare for the interview gauntlet#
Expect multiple rounds, often 4-6, including a call with HR, a hiring manager interview, a peer interview, and sometimes a case study or presentation. They will test both your technical knowledge and your cultural fit.
Common questions you must be ready for:
- "Tell me about a time you had to influence a skeptical hiring manager to change their hiring criteria."
- "How do you build a diverse pipeline for a hard-to-fill role?"
- "Walk me through how you would explain our company's compensation philosophy to a candidate who received a higher offer elsewhere."
- "What metrics do you track to measure your own performance?"
- "Describe a situation where you had to deliver bad news to a candidate."
Have concrete stories ready using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Vague answers will sink you.
Salary and visa realities#
Salaries for recruiter roles vary hugely by location, company size, and your experience. A corporate recruiter at a mid-sized company might earn $70,000 to $95,000. A senior technical recruiter at a major tech firm could see $120,000 to $160,000 base, plus bonus and equity. Agency recruiters often have a lower base with significant commission potential. Always check current salary ranges on sites like Levels.fyi or Glassdoor for the specific company and city.
For work authorization, most US employers will only sponsor a visa for a role they consider hard to fill. Recruiter roles are not typically on the H-1B specialty occupation list unless the job requires a very specific, advanced degree. Many companies explicitly state "no sponsorship available" in the job post. If you already have work authorization (like an EAD or green card), state it clearly in your resume header. Do not assume the employer will figure it out. For the latest rules, always refer to the official USCIS website.
Your application checklist#
- Resume is one page, uses a single-column format, and has been run through an ATS checker.
- Every work experience bullet starts with an action verb and includes a metric or result.
- LinkedIn profile is 100% complete, with a professional photo and a headline that includes "Recruiter" or "Talent Acquisition."
- You have a list of 10-15 target companies and are actively following their careers pages.
- You have prepared 3-5 STAR stories that demonstrate influencing skills, data-driven decisions, and candidate experience wins.
- Your "Skills" section lists specific software: ATS name, sourcing tools, HRIS if applicable.
- You have a short, professional answer ready for "Tell me about yourself" that connects your past experience to this specific role.

FAQ#
Should I put a photo on my US recruiter resume?
No. In the United States, including a photo on your resume can lead to unconscious bias and is generally discouraged. Focus on your skills and achievements instead.
How long should my resume be?
One page is the standard for anyone with less than 10 years of experience. Two pages can be acceptable for very experienced professionals, but be ruthless about cutting irrelevant details.
Is agency recruiting or corporate recruiting better for my career?
It depends on your goals. Agency recruiting is high-pressure, commission-driven, and great for learning fast. Corporate recruiting is more strategic, focused on long-term hiring and company culture. Many people start in agency to build skills.
What is the biggest mistake international candidates make?
Assuming their home country's resume format will work. The US format is very specific: achievement-focused, one page, no personal details like age or marital status. Not adapting is a fast way to get rejected.
How important is a cover letter?
It varies. If the application asks for one, write a tailored letter. If it is optional, a short, focused email in the body of your application can work. Never send a generic, long cover letter.
