Zoho Does Not Care About Your Degree. They Care If You Can Code.#

Zoho is not a typical Indian IT company. It is a Chennai-based product company with 100 million+ users across 150+ countries, zero debt, entirely bootstrapped, and known for one thing that separates it from every mass-hiring IT services firm: Zoho does not require a college degree to get hired.

Sridhar Vembu, Zoho's founder, has repeatedly said that he values raw problem-solving ability over academic credentials. The company runs Zoho Schools of Learning, where they pick students straight after 12th standard, train them for a year, and hire them at competitive salaries. No B.Tech required.

For freshers with a degree, Zoho pays 5-8 LPA depending on the role and track. Compare that to TCS Ninja at 3.36 LPA or Wipro Elite at 3.5 LPA. The difference is significant. But so is the bar. Zoho's interview process is harder, more technical, and completely focused on coding ability. No aptitude rounds. No essay sections. Just code.

This guide is based on experiences shared by candidates who appeared for Zoho's 2024-25 and 2025-26 hiring cycles, including both on-campus and off-campus drives. We have compiled the actual interview structure, the types of questions asked, and the specific areas you need to prepare.

Zoho Hiring Process: 5 Rounds#

Unlike TCS or Infosys, Zoho does not start with an aptitude test. Every round is programming-heavy. Here is the complete process.

RoundWhat HappensDurationFocus
Round 1: ScreeningOnline coding test with 10-15 MCQs and 2-3 programming questions90-120 minC basics, logic, output prediction
Round 2: C ProgrammingPen-and-paper or whiteboard coding in C60-90 minPointers, memory, string manipulation
Round 3: Advanced ProgrammingComplex data structures and algorithm problems60-90 minTrees, graphs, dynamic programming
Round 4: System Design (Junior)Design a small application or module45-60 minObject modeling, database schema, class design
Round 5: HR / Cultural FitValues alignment, Zoho-specific questions20-30 minLong-term commitment, Chennai relocation

Key difference from IT services companies: There is no separate aptitude round. Zoho filters purely on programming ability. If you cannot write C code on paper without an IDE, you will not pass Round 2.

Round 1: Screening Test

The screening round is conducted online (sometimes on HackerRank or Zoho's own platform). It includes:

  • 10-15 MCQs: C output prediction, pointer arithmetic, operator precedence, bitwise operations. These are not straightforward. They test edge cases and tricky C behavior.
  • 2-3 Coding Problems: Typically involve array manipulation, string operations, pattern printing, or basic recursion. Medium difficulty. Time limit is tight.

Languages allowed: C, C++, Java, Python. But the MCQs are almost always in C. Zoho expects you to understand C regardless of your preferred language.

Cutoff: Roughly 60-70% on MCQs and at least 1.5-2 coding problems fully solved (all test cases passing).

Round 2: C Programming Round

This is where Zoho stands apart from every other company hiring freshers in India. They test C programming on paper or whiteboard. No IDE, no auto-complete, no compiler. You write code by hand, and the interviewer checks logic, syntax, and memory management.

Topics that come up repeatedly:

  • Pointer manipulation and pointer arithmetic
  • Dynamic memory allocation (malloc, calloc, free)
  • String operations without using string.h functions
  • Struct and union usage
  • File handling in C
  • Recursive solutions to classic problems

Why C? Zoho believes that if you can write clean, working C code, you understand how computers actually work. Memory management, pointer logic, data representation at the byte level. These fundamentals don't change with framework trends. A candidate who understands pointers and manual memory management can learn any language or framework quickly.

Round 3: Advanced Programming

This round is a significant step up. You are given 2-3 complex problems and asked to solve them, usually on a whiteboard or paper, sometimes on a machine.

Common topics:

  • Binary trees and BST operations
  • Graph traversal (BFS, DFS) and shortest path
  • Dynamic programming (knapsack, longest common subsequence, matrix chain multiplication)
  • Hashing and collision resolution
  • Sorting algorithms and their trade-offs (not just knowing names, but implementing them from scratch)
  • Linked list advanced operations (detect cycle, merge sorted lists, reverse in groups)

Important: The interviewer is watching your thought process. They want to see how you break down a problem, consider edge cases, and optimize. Getting the right answer matters, but so does your approach.

Round 4: System Design (Junior Level)

Unlike FAANG system design rounds, Zoho's version for freshers is more grounded. You are asked to design a small, real-world application.

Examples candidates have reported:

  • Design a library management system (classes, relationships, database tables)
  • Design an online booking system (movie tickets or hotel rooms)
  • Design a file storage system like a simplified Google Drive
  • Design a chat application (data models, message flow)

They evaluate:

  • How you identify entities and relationships
  • Your database schema design (normalization, keys)
  • Class/object modeling
  • How you handle edge cases (concurrent users, data consistency)

You don't need to know distributed systems or microservices. Think in terms of clear object models, relational tables, and basic application flow.

Round 5: HR / Cultural Fit

Zoho's HR round is shorter than at IT services companies, but it carries weight. Zoho is headquartered in Chennai (with a major office in the rural town of Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu), and they look for candidates who are genuinely interested in the company, not people who are using Zoho as a stepping stone to a FAANG job.

10 HR and Cultural Fit Questions#

Q1: Why Zoho and not a bigger-name company like Google or Microsoft?

Be genuine. Talk about Zoho's product-first culture, the fact that they are profitable without VC funding, their commitment to building from India for the world, and the Zoho Schools initiative that reflects their values. Don't say "because I didn't get Google." Say something real: "Zoho builds products used by 100 million people and does it profitably without outside funding. That's the kind of engineering culture I want to be part of."

Q2: Are you comfortable working from Chennai / Tenkasi?

Zoho's HQ is in Chennai, and they have a significant office in Tenkasi, a small town in southern Tamil Nadu. Sridhar Vembu moved operations there to prove that world-class software can be built outside metro cities. If you say "I only want to work in Bangalore," you are likely done. Show genuine willingness.

Q3: Tell me about yourself.

Keep it under 2 minutes. Focus on: education, programming skills (mention C specifically if you are strong in it), projects you built, and what draws you to product companies. Skip the "I was born in..." monologue.

Q4: What do you know about Zoho's products?

Know at least 3-4 products: Zoho CRM, Zoho Mail, Zoho Writer, Zoho Books, Zoho One (the all-in-one suite). Bonus: mention that Zoho competes directly with Salesforce, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365. Showing product awareness signals genuine interest.

Q5: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

"Contributing to a Zoho product as a senior engineer, deeply involved in architecture decisions, and mentoring newer team members." Zoho values long-term retention. They don't want to train you for 2 years only for you to leave for a higher-paying offer.

Q6: Describe a challenging project you worked on.

Use the STAR method. Situation, Task, Action, Result. Emphasize the technical complexity. If you solved a hard problem using first-principles thinking (not by installing a library), mention that. Zoho respects engineers who build things from scratch.

Q7: How do you approach learning a new technology?

Zoho wants self-learners. Talk about how you read documentation, build small projects, read source code. If you learned C on your own (not in college), mention it.

Q8: What is your preferred programming language and why?

Be honest but prepared for follow-ups. If you say Python, be ready to explain trade-offs vs C/C++. If you say C, be ready for hard C questions. Whatever you say, own it fully.

Q9: Do you have any questions for us?

Ask something meaningful: "What does the first 6 months look like for a fresher at Zoho?" or "Which product teams are currently hiring freshers?" or "How does Zoho decide which products to build next?"

Q10: Are you comfortable with Zoho's service agreement?

Zoho typically has a 2-3 year service agreement. Show awareness and commitment: "I understand the agreement and I'm joining Zoho for the long term, not as a temporary stop."

Salary Structure at Zoho (2025-26 Batch)#

TrackPackage (LPA)Who Qualifies
Zoho Corporation (Regular B.Tech Hire)5-8 LPAEngineering graduates who clear all 5 rounds
Zoho Schools of Learning Graduate4-6 LPAStudents trained through Zoho's own program (no degree)
Experienced / Specialist Roles8-15 LPACandidates with strong domain expertise or competitive programming background

How the range works: The 5-8 LPA range depends on your performance across rounds, especially Round 3 (Advanced Programming) and Round 4 (System Design). Candidates who demonstrate strong algorithmic thinking and clean code typically land on the higher end.

Compared to IT services companies:

CompanyFresher Package
TCS Ninja3.36 LPA
Wipro Elite3.5 LPA
Infosys (Power Programmer)6.5 LPA
Zoho5-8 LPA
TCS Digital7-7.5 LPA

Zoho's base package is nearly 2x the standard IT services salary. The trade-off: harder interviews, Chennai/Tenkasi location, and a more demanding work environment where you are expected to write production code from day one. There is no 6-month training program. You ship code within weeks of joining.

Additional benefits: Zoho provides free meals, health insurance, transport, and a flat organizational structure where freshers work directly with senior engineers. No bench period. No support/maintenance projects for the first 2 years (which is common at IT services firms).

Preparation Tips: What Actually Matters#

1. Master C Programming

This is non-negotiable. Even if you primarily code in Python or Java, Zoho will test C. Specifically:

  • Pointers: Pointer to pointer, pointer to arrays, function pointers. Practice until pointer arithmetic is second nature.
  • Memory management: malloc, calloc, realloc, free. Know what happens when you forget to free memory. Know what a dangling pointer is. Know what a memory leak looks like.
  • String manipulation without library functions: Implement your own string functions. This is a favorite Zoho question pattern.
  • Structs: Know how to use structs to model real-world entities. This connects to the system design round.

Practice resource: The book "The C Programming Language" by Kernighan and Ritchie (K&R) is still the best. Read chapters 5 (Pointers) and 6 (Structures) at minimum.

2. Write Code on Paper

Zoho will ask you to code on paper or whiteboard. This is a different skill from typing in an IDE. Practice:

  • Writing syntactically correct code without auto-complete
  • Tracing through your code by hand (dry run)
  • Drawing memory diagrams to explain pointer operations
  • Writing clean, readable code with proper indentation, even on paper

3. Data Structures From Scratch

Don't just use library implementations of stacks, queues, trees, and hash maps. Implement them yourself in C. Zoho tests whether you understand how data structures work internally, not whether you can call Collections.sort() in Java.

4. Think in First Principles

Zoho values engineers who reason from fundamentals. When asked "how would you implement X?", don't start with "I'd use this library." Start with "What are the core requirements? What data do we need? What operations must be efficient?" This thinking pattern shows up in every round.

5. Know Zoho as a Company

Read about Sridhar Vembu's philosophy, the Zoho Schools initiative, the move to Tenkasi, and Zoho's position as a profitable bootstrapped company competing with Salesforce and Google. Candidates who understand Zoho's culture and values have a clear edge in the HR round.

6. Off-Campus Applications

Zoho conducts off-campus drives regularly. Keep an eye on:

  • Zoho Careers page
  • Zoho's social media accounts for drive announcements
  • College placement cells (Zoho visits many tier-2/3 colleges in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh)
  • Employee referrals (connect with Zoho employees on LinkedIn)

Practice with AI Mock Interviews#

Reading questions and answers is not the same as explaining them under pressure. Every candidate who cleared Zoho's interview told us the same thing: the jump from "I understand this concept" to "I can explain it clearly while writing code on a whiteboard" is massive.

JobRise's AI Mock Interview Bot simulates a real Zoho interview experience:

  • Select "Zoho" as the company and "Fresher" as the level
  • Get asked C programming, data structure, and system design questions
  • Practice explaining your thought process while solving problems
  • Get instant feedback on your answer quality and approach
  • Practice as many times as you want until your explanations are sharp

FAQ#

Does Zoho require a B.Tech degree?

No. Zoho is one of the few companies in India that hires candidates without a college degree through Zoho Schools of Learning. For regular campus hiring, they accept B.Tech, MCA, and M.Tech graduates, but the degree is not the deciding factor. Your coding ability is.

What programming language should I prepare for Zoho?

C is essential. Zoho's screening MCQs and Round 2 are heavily C-focused. You should also be proficient in at least one of C++, Java, or Python for the advanced programming rounds. But if you can only prepare one language deeply, make it C.

How is Zoho different from TCS or Infosys?

Zoho is a product company, not a services company. You build products (Zoho CRM, Zoho Mail) used by millions, rather than working on client projects for other companies. The salary is higher (5-8 LPA vs 3.36-3.5 LPA), but the interview is harder, and the work expectations are higher. There is no bench period and no 6-month training. You start contributing to production code within weeks.

Can I apply to Zoho off-campus?

Yes. Zoho regularly conducts off-campus hiring drives. Check the Zoho Careers page, follow their LinkedIn page for announcements, and consider reaching out to Zoho employees for referrals. Many freshers who join Zoho come through off-campus channels.

What is the Zoho service agreement?

Zoho typically has a service agreement of 2-3 years. The specific terms vary and are communicated during the offer stage. Leaving before the agreement period may involve a financial penalty. Given Zoho's above-average salary and work environment, most employees find the agreement reasonable.

Sources & Further Reading#

Zoho is not TCS. They don't hire 44,000 freshers. They don't have an aptitude test you can brute-force with IndiaBix. Zoho's interview is a pure coding gauntlet, and the company expects you to think like an engineer from day one.

But the reward is worth it. A 5-8 LPA starting salary. Real product work. No bench. No support projects. Direct contribution to products used by over 100 million people.

The preparation path is clear: master C, implement data structures from scratch, practice writing code on paper, and understand Zoho's culture. The candidates who get selected are not necessarily from IITs or NITs. They are the ones who can write a clean linked list implementation on a whiteboard without hesitating.
