Know where Copilot got its answer

Module 2: Spreadsheets, Python and BI with AI

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. In your Power BI sales report, you ask Copilot for a competitor's market share. That data isn't in your report, but Copilot gives you a number. Where did it come from?

Copilot in Power BI is Microsoft's AI assistant inside Power BI reports, built on a large language model (the kind of AI behind chat tools). Microsoft's Copilot for Power BI page says it can create report pages, summarize a report and write DAX queries (Power BI's formula language).

The same page says two things every analyst should know:

  • It answers from your data, or from general knowledge. When a question is about data in the semantic model (the tables, relationships and measures behind a report), Copilot uses that model. "Otherwise, it answers from the large language model's general knowledge." So check which one you got.
  • Unprepared data gets weaker answers. "Without preparation, Copilot can misinterpret the data and return generic or inaccurate results."

So for every Copilot answer, ask two questions. Did it come from my model? And does it match a total I already trust?
