What AI does in health admin

Module 1: AI in health admin

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. A 2026 study measured the tasks people really use AI for at work. For medical records specialists, how much of the job's core work did AI already cover?

In Anthropic's study Labor market impacts of AI (March 2026), medical records specialists sit at 66.7%. People really use AI for that share of the job's core tasks. It doesn't mean the job is gone.

Medical coding is turning diagnoses and services in a patient's record into standard codes, used for billing and statistics. AI suggests codes, drafts letters and summarizes long records. What it can't do is answer for them. Every code has to be supported by what the clinician wrote, and every release of a record has to follow the privacy rules.

Sort it

Can AI draft it, or does it need a person?

      A request you can check

A prompt is the message you send to the AI. Use one like this only in a tool your organization approved for patient data:

From this visit note, list each diagnosis and procedure.
Quote the exact line of the note that supports each one.
Don't add anything that isn't in the note.
      Mark anything unclear as [query].

      Fill the gaps

Fill the gaps in the same prompt.
