Where AI shows up on a shift

Module 1: What AI already does on your shift

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. On a ward, in a care home or on a home visit, where does AI show up most often today?

Assessing a patient, giving medicines, sitting with a frightened family: no AI tool does any of that. What AI touches is the paperwork around the care. Your workplace picks the tools, so you may see some of these or none yet:

  • Ambient scribe: a tool that listens to a conversation and drafts the note.
  • Handover summary: a draft for the next shift (a handover is passing care on).
  • Plain-language handouts: an AI chat tool rewrites instructions a family can follow.
  • Rosters: scheduling software suggests the staff schedule.
  • Early-warning alerts: the EHR (electronic health record, the digital chart) flags changing readings.

A worked example

Step by step

Follow one afternoon. At each point, the tool does one job and you do another.

Step 1 of 4: 14:00 A patient describes new pain

Step 1 of 4

14:00 A patient describes new pain

The ambient scribe drafts the note. You check every line, fix it and sign it.

The pattern: tools draft, suggest and flag. People check, decide and sign.

Your turn

Fill the gaps

Fill each gap so every line says who does what.

A shift with AI

The ambient scribe . I , then I sign. The early-warning alert . I go and see the patient.
