Where ui/ux designer hiring stands in 2026

UI/UX designers shape how millions of users experience digital products. India's design talent pool is booming, with companies from startups to enterprises now hiring dedicated design roles. This is one of the few tech-adjacent careers where you do not need a CS degree. A strong portfolio matters more than any certification.

Market insight: Design roles in India have tripled since 2022. Companies like CRED, Razorpay, Flipkart, and Swiggy have 50+ person design teams. Even service companies like TCS and Infosys have created dedicated design practices. Glassdoor shows 12,000+ UI/UX roles open across India.

The line recruiters actually read

One rewritten bullet does more for a fresher resume than a new template. This is the difference.

You wrote

Designed screens in Figma for an app.

Recruiters read

Redesigned a kirana ordering flow after testing with 5 store owners, raising task completion from 61% to 89%.

Skills that show up in ui/ux designer job postings

These appear most often in Indian postings for this role. List the ones you can defend in an interview, and skip the rest.
  • Figma (Auto Layout, Components, Prototyping)
  • User Research & Usability Testing
  • Wireframing & Information Architecture
  • Visual Design (Typography, Color Theory, Grid)
  • Design Systems & Component Libraries
  • Interaction Design & Micro-interactions
  • Responsive & Mobile-First Design
  • HTML/CSS (basic implementation understanding)

Build it section by section

Follow this order top to bottom. It covers everything a recruiter scans for and stays parseable for ATS software.
  1. 1. Professional summary

    • Lead with 'UI/UX Designer' and your design philosophy in one line
    • Mention your primary tool (Figma) and design approach (user-centered, data-informed)
    • Reference a portfolio stat: 'Designed 10+ mobile and web interfaces with Figma prototypes'
    • Do NOT just say 'creative and passionate'. Show specific design capabilities
  2. 2. Skills

    • Group as: Design Tools, UX Methods, Visual Design, Collaboration
    • Always list Figma first: it dominates 85%+ of Indian design job postings
    • Include UX research methods: usability testing, card sorting, user interviews
    • Add 'Design Systems', 'Responsive Design', and 'Accessibility (WCAG)' for completeness
  3. 3. Case studies / projects

    • Your resume should drive traffic to your portfolio: include 2-3 case study titles with brief outcomes
    • Format: 'Problem, process, outcome' in 2 lines max per project
    • Link directly to the Behance/Dribbble/portfolio case study page for each project
    • Show process, not just final screens: recruiters want to see how you think
  4. 4. Education & extras

    • A design degree is nice but not required: the portfolio matters 10x more
    • Mention relevant coursework: HCI, Visual Communication, Psychology
    • Include design community involvement (Figma Community, Dribbble, local meetups)
    • List any design thinking workshops, hackathons, or bootcamps attended

What separates the shortlisted resumes

  • Your resume IS a design artifact: if it looks bad, you will not get hired. Spend time on layout, typography, whitespace, and hierarchy.
  • Link your portfolio on the FIRST line of your resume, before your summary. Recruiters want to see your work, not read about it.
  • Include quantifiable UX metrics where possible: 'Reduced task completion time by 40%' or 'Increased form completion rate from 23% to 67%.'
  • Keep your resume to 1 page with minimal color: ATS software cannot parse creative resume formats. Use a clean, parseable layout and save the creativity for your portfolio.

Projects that count as proof

Freshers with strong projects get shortlisted far more often. These go beyond the tutorial-level work every applicant lists.
  • Redesign of a Government Website

Pick any Indian government website (IRCTC, passport seva, state portal). Document current usability problems, conduct informal user testing with 5 people, and create a complete redesign with improved IA, navigation, and visual design.

    Stack: Figma, FigJam, Maze/UsabilityHub

  • Mobile App for Local Kirana Stores

Design a mobile ordering app for neighborhood kirana stores. Include user research with actual store owners and customers, user flows, wireframes, and a high-fidelity prototype with micro-interactions.

Stack: Figma, Protopie, Google Forms (research)

  • Design System for a Startup

Create a complete design system with tokens (colors, typography, spacing), components (buttons, inputs, cards, modals), and documentation. Publish on Figma Community. This shows systems thinking that recruiters value highly.

Stack: Figma, Storybook (if paired with code)

Mistakes that get ui/ux designer resumes rejected

  • Using a heavily designed, multi-column creative resume format. Ironic but true: creative resumes fail ATS parsing. Keep the resume clean and standard; let your portfolio showcase design skills.
  • Showing only final screens without explaining the design process. Recruiters hire designers for their thinking, not just their visual output. Always document the 'why' behind decisions.
  • Not having a portfolio website. Behance/Dribbble are fine as secondary, but a personal portfolio site (even a simple one on Framer or Webflow) shows initiative and professionalism.

Certifications worth the time

These carry weight with recruiters hiring ui/ux designer freshers. Pair each one with a project so it reads as proof, not decoration.
  • Google UX Design Professional Certificate

The most recognized UX certification globally. Covers the full UX process from research to prototyping. Available free via Coursera financial aid and highly valued by Indian companies.

  • Interaction Design Foundation (IxDF) Membership

World-class UX courses at an affordable price. IxDF courses on your LinkedIn profile signal serious commitment to the UX craft. Covers advanced topics like UX strategy and service design.

  • Figma Advanced Certification or Community Contributions

While there is no official Figma cert, publishing resources on Figma Community and earning 500+ downloads demonstrates real proficiency better than any certificate.
