Petit test
Guess first, no penalty. Which one is safe to paste into a free public AI chat tool?
A public AI tool (a free chat tool you sign up for yourself) sits outside your employer's systems. Once you paste something in, you can't take it back.
Health information gets extra protection almost everywhere. In the US, the HIPAA Privacy Rule sets national standards to protect medical records and other "individually identifiable health information". In the UK, data concerning health is special category data under UK GDPR. Wherever you work, your employer's policy and your country's law come first.
The rule: real patient details stay inside the tools your employer approves. To practice, make everything up.
A worked example
Here is the same prompt (the message you type into an AI tool) written two ways.
Avant et après
Switch between the risky request and the safe one.
Risky
Rewrite this handover in plain English: Mr. J., bed 7, River Ward, admitted Tuesday after a fall, confused at night, daughter visits at 6.
The risky version has no full name, but initials, bed, ward and day together point to one real person. The safe version is invented from start to finish, so it can't point to anyone.
Your turn
Complétez les trous
Fill each gap to turn a risky request into a safe one.
Practice prompt
Rewrite this discharge reminder in plain English for . Use .
For more practice, the Redact before you paste lab has you mark the identifiers in a made-up patient note.
