Day in the Life of a Backend Developer

Career TipsHindiJobRise Team9 min read

Tumhe lagta hai backend developer ka din code likhne me hi guzarta hai, aur phir tum standup me 40 minute baith kar pata karte ho ki aaj bhi kuchh code nahi hua. Real picture thoda alag hai. Meetings, debugging doosre team ke service me, aur production alerts ke beech tumhe apna actual kaam nikalna padta hai. Ye article ek mid-level backend developer ka realistic din batata hai, 4 saal experience wale bande ka, jiska code production me chal raha hai.

Subah ka pehla ghanta#

9 baje laptop khulta hai. Slack check, email check, phir dashboard. Koi alert raat me fire hua to sabse pehle wo. Nahi to apna task board dekhte ho, kaunsa ticket aaj karna hai.

Standup usually 9:30 ya 10 baje hota hai. 15 minute ka hota hai, kabhi 25 bhi. Har banda batata hai kal kya kiya, aaj kya karega, koi blocker hai ya nahi. Simple hai, par log lambi kahani sunane lagte hain.

Real talk: standup ke baad sabse zyada productive window hota hai, 10 se 12:30. Isme se agar ek meeting aa gayi to flow toot jata hai.

Meetings vs deep work#

Mid-level pe tum sirf coder nahi ho. Tumhe design discussion me bithaya jata hai, product manager se scope clear karna hota hai, aur juniors ke questions bhi aate hain. Ye sab zaroori hai, par ye tumhara coding time kha leta hai.

Typical split kuchh aisa hota hai. Din me 2 se 3 ghante meetings, calls, aur ad hoc discussions. Bacha hua time me se code writing actually 2 se 3 ghante hi ho pata hai. Baaki time debugging, code review, documentation, aur context switching me chala jata hai.

Ek advice jo kaam aati hai: apna calendar me 2 ghante ka block khud daalo, "focus time" naam se. Log us slot me meeting nahi karte. Kam se kam aadha din bach jata hai.

Tools jo actually use hote hain#

YouTube videos me tumhe fancy stack dikhate hain. Real office me tools thode boring hote hain.

  • Monitoring: Grafana, Datadog, ya New Relic, alerts aur dashboards yahin dekhte ho
  • Ticketing: Jira, Linear, ya Notion, jahan company ne setup kiya ho
  • Communication: Slack aur Zoom, din me 20 baar khulta hai
  • CI/CD: Jenkins, GitHub Actions, ya ArgoCD, deployment pipeline handle karna

Ye tools seekhne me zyada time nahi lagta. Asli skill ye hai ki jab production me kuchh gadbad ho to pata ho kahan dekhna hai.

Ek real din ka example#

Maan lo Monday hai. 9:30 pe standup. 10 se 12 baje tumhe payment service me ek naya API banana hai. Beech me 11 baje ek junior ka message aata hai, "ye error kyu aa raha hai". 10 minute lagte hain.

12 baje design review meeting, 45 minute. Usme decide hota hai ki database schema change karna padega. Lunch 1 se 2. Phir 2 se 4 tum schema migration likh rahe ho, aur saath me staging environment pe test kar rahe ho.

4 baje production alert. Order processing service slow chal rahi hai. 45 minute lagte hain root cause dhundhne me. Ek slow query tha. Fix karke deploy kiya. 5:30 pe code review, do PRs dekhe. 6:30 baje laptop band.

Din me actual new code likha, shayad 150 lines. Baaki sab firefighting aur discussion tha. Ye normal hai.

Pressure points jo koi nahi batata#

Production incident sabse zyada pressure deta hai. Jab live service down hoti hai, customer impact hota hai, aur Slack me sab pooch rahe hain "kya hua", tab tumhe calm rehna hota hai. Bahut log is pressure me ghabra jate hain.

Deadline pressure alag type ka hota hai. Product team ne date de di, ab scope cut nahi hoga, tumhe deliver karna hai. Weekends kabhi kabhi jaate hain. Har company me nahi hota ye, par startups me common hai.

On-call duty bhi ek reality hai. Mid-level pe tumhara week aa jata hai jab raat ko 2 baje call aaye to uthna padega. Kuchh companies iska extra pay deti hain, kuchh nahi. Offer letter me ye zaroor check karna.

Jo cheezein newcomers ko hairaan karti hain#

Pehli cheez: coding time expect se bahut kam hota hai. Tum sochte ho 8 ghante code, reality me 3 ghante. Baaki sab coordination hai.

Doosri cheez: doosre team ke code samajhna tumhara kaam hai. Tumhe sirf apna module nahi dekhna, purana legacy code bhi padhna padega. Kabhi kabhi 2015 ka code samajhne me 2 ghante lagte hain.

Teesri cheez: meetings me bolna seekhna padta hai. Tumhe apna point clearly rakhna hoga, warna tumhara design reject ho jayega. Ye soft skill hai jo college me nahi sikhate.

Chauthi cheez: documentation bahut zaroori hai. Tumhara code to samajh aa jayega, par jab tum chhutti pe ho aur koi issue aaye, tab docs hi kaam aati hain.

Junior se senior tak role kaise badalta hai#

Junior level pe tumhe defined tickets milte hain. Tumhe sirf implement karna hai, samajh ke. Code review me tumhare PRs pe 10 comments aate hain, tum seekhte ho.

Mid-level pe tum khud tickets break karte ho, juniors guide karte ho, aur design discussions me participate karte ho. Tumhare upar ek service ki ownership aa jati hai.

Senior pe tum decide karte ho ki kya banna chahiye, sirf kaise nahi. Tum cross-team meetings me jaate ho, tech debt prioritize karte ho, aur hiring me bhi contribute karte ho. Coding time aur bhi kam ho jata hai, par impact zyada hota hai.

Salary bhi badhti hai, par numbers city aur company pe vary karte hain. India me mid-level backend developer ka package logon ne 12 se 25 LPA range me report kiya hai, product companies me zyada, services me kam. Ye numbers har saal badalte hain, to current market ke liye job listings dekho aur apni negotiation khud karo.

Tumhare liye checklist#

Agar tum backend developer banana chahte ho, ya pehli job me ho, ye kaam karo:

  • Ek language me depth lo, Java, Python, Go, ya Node, sab thoda thoda mat karo
  • SQL achhe se seekho, joins, indexes, query plans, ye interview me bhi aur job me bhi
  • Git commands comfortable hona chahiye, merge, rebase, cherry-pick
  • Ek cloud platform pe basic hands-on karo, AWS sabse common hai
  • Linux command line pe comfort build karo, logs padhna aana chahiye
  • System design basics samjho, caching, load balancing, queues
  • Apna ek project deploy karo, sirf localhost pe nahi, real domain pe
  • Communication pe kaam karo, apna kaam clearly explain karna aana chahiye

Interview ki tayari ke liye JD ka breakdown zaroor karo, hamara free JD decoder tool tumhe exact skills nikal ke deta hai. Resume bhejne se pehle ATS check kar lo, warna resume filter me hi atak jata hai. Latest openings ke liye jobs section dekhte raho.

Ek sample code review comment#

Naye log code review me sirf "LGTM" likh dete hain ya phir personal attack kar dete hain. Dono galat hai. Ek achha review comment aisa hota hai:

"Ye function 200 lines ka ho gaya hai, isko 3 parts me split kar sakte hain. Payment validation, DB call, aur response building. Testing me bhi easy ho jayega. Kya tumhe lage to main pair kar leta hun."

Point clear hai, reason diya hai, aur help offer ki hai. Ye tone rakho.

Pressure handle karne ke tarike#

Incident ke time panic mat karo. Pehle impact samjho, kitne users affected hain. Phir mitigation karo, rollback ya feature flag off. Root cause baad me, production pe turant nahi.

Apna time protect karo. Har Slack message ka turant reply mat do, warna focus kabhi nahi banega. Deep work block rakho.

Weekend pe laptop mat kholo jab tak on-call na ho. Burnout real hai, aur backend roles me ye common hai kyunki production kabhi so nahi.

Kya ye role tumhare liye hai#

Backend role un logon ke liye achha hai jinhe systems samajhna pasand hai, sirf UI nahi. Tumhe patience chahiye, debugging me ghante lagte hain. Tumhe seekhne ki bhookh chahiye, kyunki tools har 2 saal me badalte hain.

Agar tumhe sirf naya framework seekhna hai aur purana code samajhna boring lagta hai, to backend tumhare liye nahi hai. Yahan 50% time doosron ka likha hua code padhne me jata hai.

Achhi baat ye hai ki demand stable hai. Har company ko backend chahiye, chahe wo bank ho ya food delivery app. Skills transferable hain, ek company se dusri me ja sakte ho.
