Day in the Life of a QA Engineer
Sprint planning khatam hua, dev ne "testing ke liye ready hai" bol diya, aur aapko aaj hi regression khatam karni hai. Yahi QA Engineer ki real life hai. Movies wala coding glamour nahi, balki adha din meetings me aur adha din bug repro karne me.
Interview me sab bolte hain "quality is everyone's responsibility". Ground reality alag hai. Jab release pass hoti hai toh dev credit leta hai. Jab bug production me milta hai toh QA se poocha jata hai.
Morning: standup aur inbox#
Subah 9:30 ka standup. 10 minute bolte hain, 20 minute chalta hai. Aap batate ho kal kya test kiya, aaj kya karoge, kya block hai. Phir PM extra 5 minute le leta hai "quick sync" ke liye.
Standup se pehle aap Jira kholte ho. Naye bugs aaye hain ya nahi. Dev ne kisi ticket ko "Ready for QA" mark kiya ya nahi. Yeh sab 20 minute me niptana padta hai.
Phir aata hai regression ka pressure. Naya feature aaya hai, lekin purana checkout flow tootna nahi chahiye. Aap test cases likhte ho, priority set karte ho, aur decide karte ho kya aaj run karna hai.

Tools jo actually use hote hain#
Brochure me Selenium, Cypress, Appium sab likha hota hai. Real project me aap 3-4 tools use karte ho, aur zyada time Excel ya Google Sheet me jaata hai.
Typical day me yeh khulta hai:
- Jira ya Azure DevOps, bug aur ticket track karne ke liye
- Postman ya Bruno, API test karne ke liye
- Chrome DevTools, console aur network tab check karne ke liye
- TestRail ya koi simple Google Sheet, test cases maintain karne ke liye
- Slack ya Teams, dev se screenshot bhejne ke liye
- BrowserStack ya real device, mobile testing ke liye
Automation bhi hota hai, lekin utna nahi jitna LinkedIn posts dikhati hain. Mid-level QA ka week me 2-3 din automation pe jaata hai. Baaki manual exploratory testing me.
Meetings vs deep work#
Yeh role ka sabse frustrating part hai. Aapko focused testing chahiye, lekin calendar meeting se bhari hai.
Ek realistic split aisa hai: 2-3 ghante meetings, 4 ghante actual testing, 1 ghanta documentation, baaki ad-hoc kaam. Kuch din toh meetings hi 4 ghante ho jati hain.
Exploratory testing me focus chahiye. Aap ek flow try kar rahe ho, beech me standup aa gaya. Wapas aake bhool gaye kya socha tha. Yeh real problem hai, koi exaggerate nahi kar raha.
Pressure points jo koi nahi batata#
Deadline se ek din pehle "final build" aata hai. Aapke paas 4 ghante hain pura regression karne ke liye. Aap karoge kya? Priority wise test karte ho, critical flows check karte ho, aur baaki risk pe sign off dete ho.
Yeh decision lena sabse mushkil hai. Aapko batana hota hai "yeh test nahi hua, risk hai". PM ko yeh sunna pasand nahi. Phir bhi bolna padta hai.
Doosra pressure: dev se argue karna. Dev bole "meri machine pe toh chal raha hai". Aapko exact steps, screenshot, video, console logs sab dena hota hai. Tab jaake bug accept hota hai.
Teesra: production bugs. Kabhi kabhi customer se bug milta hai jo aap miss kar gaye. Blame aap pe aata hai. Har QA ke saath hota hai, isko personally mat lo.
Kaam ki ek example#
Maan lo checkout flow me bug mila hai. Yeh aapka Jira bug hona chahiye:
Title: Payment fails when card number has space, checkout page shows blank error
Steps to reproduce:
- Open checkout page
- Enter card number as "4242 4242 4242 4242" with spaces
- Enter valid expiry and CVV
- Click Pay Now
Expected: Payment processes or shows clear validation error Actual: Page shows blank red error, no message, user stuck Environment: Chrome 131, Windows 11, staging build 2.4.1 Console error: Uncaught TypeError in payment.js line 245 Video: [attached]
Yeh level ka bug report likhoge toh dev aapko seriously lega. Warna "kuch nahi ho raha" wala bug bhejoge toh 3 round comments aayenge.
What surprises newcomers#
Naya QA engineer sochta hai testing matlab "click click aur pass". Reality me aapko product samajhna padta hai. Business logic, user behavior, edge cases, sab. Coding se zyada thinking chahiye.
Log yeh bhi expect karte hain ki QA ko code nahi aata. Galat. Automation ke liye JavaScript ya Java aana zaroori hai. API testing ke liye SQL aur JSON samajhna padta hai. Bina technical skills ke growth limited hai.
Ek aur surprise: aapko bolna padta hai. Shy QA ko problem hoti hai. Aapko meeting me stand lena hota hai, risk explain karna hota hai, kabhi kabhi "yeh release nahi jaani chahiye" bolna hota hai.
Junior se senior tak role kaise badalta hai#
Junior QA ko test cases milte hain, woh execute karta hai. Bugs likhta hai. Usko bataya jata hai kya test karna hai. Decisions nahi lene padte.
Mid-level QA khud test strategy banata hai. Usse feature milta hai, woh decide karta hai kya cover karna hai. Junior ko guide karta hai. Automation scripts bhi likhta hai.
Senior QA aur alag level pe hota hai. Uska zyada time meetings aur planning me jaata hai. Test strategy, risk assessment, process improvement. Kabhi kabhi coding kam, Excel aur PowerPoint zyada.
- API testing aur SQL zaroor seekho, yeh roz kaam aata hai
- Ek programming language seriously seekho, JavaScript ya Python
- Bug reporting improve karo, yeh aapka brand hai
- DevOps basics samjho, CI/CD pipeline kaise kaam karta hai
- Domain knowledge build karo, finance ya healthcare ya e-commerce
- Communication skill pe kaam karo, meetings me bolna seekho

Realistic expectations#
Salary ki baat karein toh India me mid-level QA Engineer ka package typically 5 se 12 lakh per annum range me hota hai, city aur company pe depend karta hai. Automation wale roles thoda zyada dete hain. Yeh numbers har saal change hote hain, current openings aur official sources se verify zaroor karo.
Growth thodi slow lagti hai agar sirf manual testing kar rahe ho. Automation aur performance testing me jaoge toh growth fast hai. Lekin coding aani chahiye.
