Portfolio Projects for Machine Learning Engineer
Tumhare paas 5 certificates hain lekin recruiter ne ek bhi project nahi khola. Yeh sabse common problem hai ML fresher aur career switcher ke saath. Certificates batate hain ki tumne course kiya. Projects prove karte hain ki tum soch sakte ho.
Interviewer ko farak nahi padta tumne kis platform se course kiya. Use farak padta hai ki tumne ek messy problem ko kaise handle kiya. Isliye 3 strong projects pe focus karo, 10 random tutorial clones pe nahi.
Reviewer kya dekhta hai#
Resume screening mein hiring manager tumhare project ko 30 second deta hai. Is 30 second mein use sirf 3 cheezein chahiye: problem kya tha, tumne kya kiya, result kya mila. Agar yeh teeno clear nahi hain, project skip ho jayega.
Technical depth baad mein check hota hai, jab interview shortlist ban jaati hai. Tab reviewer dekhta hai ki tumne data cleaning kiya ya sirf Kaggle se clean data uthaya. Use dekhna hai ki tumne baseline banaya, tune kiya, aur failure case samjha ya nahi.
Reality check: ek aur sentiment analysis on IMDB dataset se kisi ko farak nahi padta. Har dusre candidate ne wahi kiya hai. Tumhe kuch aisa chahiye jo thoda specific ho.

Project 1: End-to-end ML pipeline ek real messy dataset pe#
Yeh project tumhari core strength banega. Ek dataset lo jo genuinely ganda ho, real logs, public government data, ya scraped data. Kaggle se pre-cleaned CSV mat lo.
Worked example, yeh resume bullet dekho:
Before: "Built a machine learning model to predict customer churn using Python and scikit-learn."
After: "Cleaned 40k raw event logs (missing values, duplicate IDs, timestamp errors), engineered 12 features, and compared Logistic Regression vs XGBoost. XGBoost gave 0.78 ROC-AUC on 20% holdout. Deployed a FastAPI endpoint with input validation."
Farak dikhta hai. Pehle bullet mein sirf tool names hain. Doosre mein problem, decision, aur number hai. Interviewer ko pata hai ki tumne actually kaam kiya.
Is project mein yeh zaroor include karo:
- Data cleaning ke specific steps, kitne rows drop hue aur kyun
- Ek simple baseline model, jaise logistic regression ya random forest
- Proper train-test split, aur cross-validation agar data kam hai
- Confusion matrix ya error analysis, model kahan galat hai
- Ek README section jisme limitations likhi hon, jaise "does not work on data older than 2023"
- Reproducible setup: requirements.txt, seed fix kiya ho, ek command se run ho
Data source idea: Indian railway delay data, municipal budget PDFs se extracted numbers, ya apni college attendance portal ka scraped dataset. Real data tumhe real problems dega.
Project 2: Ek deployed inference app, na ki sirf notebook#
Notebook impressive nahi lagta. Ek live link impressive lagta hai. Yeh project chhota ho sakta hai, lekin isme engineering discipline dikhni chahiye.
Ek ML model lo, usko FastAPI ya Flask pe wrap karo, Streamlit ya Gradio se simple UI do, aur free tier pe deploy karo. Render, Railway, ya HuggingFace Spaces free options hain. Yeh sab free mein ho jaata hai.
Interview mein yeh project tumhe alag karega kyunki tum MLOps basics dikha paate ho. Dockerfile likhi ho toh aur accha. Input validation lagao, warna user garbage dega toh model crash karega.
Example README structure:
# Churn Predictor API
## Setup
pip install -r requirements.txt
uvicorn app:app --reload
## Endpoints
POST /predict -> {"tenure": 12, "monthly_charges": 70, ...}
## Model
XGBoost, trained on 2025-01 data, ROC-AUC 0.78
## Known issues
Fails on negative tenure values (validation added in v2)
Ek candidate ne mujhe bataya ki usne sirf "Deployed model on Heroku" likha tha. Interviewer ne pucha ki latency kya hai, use pata nahi tha. Tum yeh mat karna. Ek simple load test karo, pata lagao ki 100 requests pe response time kya hai.
Project 3: Ek research-style analysis jisme tumhara judgement dikhe#
Yeh project thoda different hai. Isme code se zyada thinking matter karti hai. Ek ambiguous question lo, aur uspe honest analysis karo.
Jaise: "Kya Indian metro cities mein air quality index weekend pe better hota hai?" Ya "Ek popular ML paper ka result kisi chhote dataset pe reproduce hota hai ya nahi?" Yeh questions ka answer simple nahi hota, aur wahi is project ki value hai.
Is project mein tumhe hypothesis likhni chahiye, data source cite karna chahiye, aur apni uncertainty accept karni chahiye. Agar result negative hai toh bhi chalega. "We found no significant difference" ek valid finding hai.
Reviewer isko pasand karega kyunki yeh dikhata hai ki tum blindly model train nahi karte. Tum question poochte ho. Yeh skill ML Engineer mein rare hai.
GitHub pe iska README research paper jaisa rakho: question, data, method, findings, threats to validity. Charts banao, matplotlib se simple graphs kaafi hain. Fancy dashboard ki zarurat nahi.
GitHub ko kaise present karo#
Har project ka README recruiter ke liye likho, sirf apne liye nahi. Pehle 5 lines mein problem, approach, aur result likho. Uske baad setup instructions.
Ye checklist follow karo:
- Repo ka naam descriptive ho, "ml-project-2" mat rakho, "churn-prediction-xgboost" rakho
- README mein ek screenshot ya demo GIF ho, log dekhna chahte hain ki app dikhta kaisa hai
- Code modular ho, ek hi notebook mein sab mat rakho, src/ folder banao
- Notebooks sirf exploration ke liye, training scripts alag file mein
- .gitignore lagao, dataset upload mat karo agar license unclear hai
- Ek "What I learned" section likho, 5-6 lines kaafi hain
- Commit history clean ho, ek din mein 40 commits mat karo, real progress dikhe
Ek free tool se apna resume ATS ke liye check kar lo, kyunki project section bhi parse hota hai. Jobrise ka /hi/free-ats-checker/ tumhe batayega ki koi keyword miss ho raha hai ya nahi.
Resume pe project section kaise likho#
Project section ko experience section ke baad rakho agar fresher ho. Agar 2+ years ka experience hai toh projects ko achievements ke andar daalo.
Har project ke liye 2 bullets max. Pehle bullet mein problem aur approach, doosre mein result aur tool. Numbers daalo, lekin fake mat karo. Agar tumne accuracy improve ki 0.72 se 0.78 tak, yeh likho. Agar koi metric nahi hai toh scope likho, "processed 50k rows daily" jaisa.
Job descriptions mein jo keywords hain, unko naturally project description mein fit karo. Agar JD "feature engineering" maang raha hai aur tumne kiya hai, toh yeh word use karo. JD samajhne ke liye /hi/free-jd-decoder/ use kar sakte ho, yeh tumhe key skills extract karke de dega.
Yeh mistakes projects ko tutorial jaisa bana deti hain#
Sabse badi galti: Titanic ya Iris dataset pe project. Yeh 2015 mein bhi common tha, ab toh recruiter has dega. Same for "movie recommendation using cosine similarity on MovieLens", yeh har doosre portfolio mein hai.
Doosri galti: README mein sirf library names. "Used pandas, numpy, sklearn" se kuch nahi hota. Interviewer jaanna chahta hai ki tumne kya decide kiya, kyun XGBoost choose kiya random forest pe.
Teesri galti: koi limitation na batana. Agar tumhara model perfect lag raha hai, toh interviewer samajh jaata hai ki data leakage hai ya tune galat kiya hai. Honest limitations tumhari credibility badhati hain.
Chauthi galti: ek din mein push kiya hua repo. Real work mein iteration hoti hai. Kam se kam 10-15 meaningful commits rakho.
Interview mein projects pe kaise baat karo#
Interviewer puchega: "Tell me about your most challenging project." Yahan tumhe STAR format use karna hai, lekin ML specifics ke saath.
Script example:
"Maine ek churn prediction pipeline banaya tha 40,000 raw event logs pe. Sabse challenging part tha data cleaning, kyunki 12% rows mein duplicate IDs the aur timestamps inconsistent the. Maine pehle ek logistic regression baseline banaya jo 0.71 ROC-AUC de raha tha. Phir maine feature engineering ki, tenure-based features aur usage trends add kiye. XGBoost se 0.78 ROC-AUC mila. Ek cheez jo main improve karunga, abhi model recent data pe drift show karta hai, isliye retraining schedule add karna chahiye."
Yeh answer 45 second ka hai. Isme problem, action, result, aur reflection sab hain. Tumhare paas har project ke liye aisa script ready hona chahiye.
Deep dive ke liye ready raho. Interviewer puchega: "Tune XGBoost kyun choose kiya?" ya "Precision recall curve kaisa tha?" Agar tumne actually kaam kiya hai toh answer aa jayega. Agar sirf tutorial follow kiya hai toh pakde jaoge.
Mock interviews ke liye apne projects ki kahani practice karo. Latest openings dekhne ke liye /hi/jobs/ pe jaao, aur ML interview prep ke liye /hi/blog/ pe guides hain.
Ek project kitna time lega#
Realistic timeline: end-to-end pipeline project ko 2-3 weekends lagenge. Deployed app ko 1-2 weekend. Research-style analysis ko 2 weekend. Total 6-8 weekend, yaani 2 mahine.
Agar tumhe jaldi job chahiye toh pehle project 1 aur 2 karo. Project 3 tab banao jab interviews start ho jayein. Yeh portfolio 3-4 mahine mein build hota hai, raat raat jaag kar nahi.
FAQ#
Kitne projects portfolio mein hone chahiye?
3 strong projects kaafi hain 10 weak projects se. Har project ka clear problem statement aur result hona chahiye. Agar tumhare paas 5 hain lekin 2 weak hain, unhe hata do.
Certificate aur project mein se kya prioritize karein?
Project priority pe rakho. Certificate sirf tab useful hai jab wo kisi specific tool jaise AWS ya Azure ML ka ho, jo job requirement mein likha hai. Warna project ka weight zyada hai.
Kaggle competition ka project count hota hai?
Haan lekin with caveats. Agar tum sirf public notebook copy kiya hai toh count nahi hoga. Agar tumne apna approach likha hai, feature engineering explain kiya hai, aur leaderboard rank decent hai toh chalega.
Non-CS background wale ko kaunsa project karna chahiye?
Project 2 se start karo, deployed app. Isme tum coding discipline dikha sakte ho bina heavy research ke. Uske baad project 1 karo jab data handling comfortable ho jaaye.
Project ke liye data kahan se laayein?
Government open data portals, Kaggle raw datasets, apna scraped data, ya public APIs. Cleaned pre-processed CSV avoid karo, cleaning process tumhare learning ka bada part hai.
Jiska interview is hafte hai, usko bhejo.
