Aap DSA grind kar rahe ho, LeetCode ke 300 questions ho gaye, par jab interviewer bolta hai “Design Swiggy for 10 million users”, dimaag blank. Yehi system design interview ka real pain hai. India mein 2026 tak product companies, fintechs, SaaS startups aur even service giants like TCS, Infosys, Wipro bhi senior roles ke liye system design seriously pooch rahe hain.

Agar tum SDE-2, SDE-3, Backend Engineer, Staff Engineer, Tech Lead ya Engineering Manager track pe ho, system design ignore karna career ka brake ban sakta hai. Razorpay, PhonePe, Paytm, Swiggy, Zomato, Flipkart type companies mein ₹25 LPA se ₹80 LPA tak ke roles mein system design interview deal-breaker hota hai.

Is guide mein hum bilkul practical tareeke se dekhenge: kya padhna hai, kaise padhna hai, India ke interviews mein kya expected hota hai, aur 2026 ke hisaab se kaunse topics must-have hain.

System Design Interview Preparation 2026 India: Pehle Ye Samjho#

System design interview ka matlab sirf “large scale architecture” banana nahi hai. Interviewer ye check karta hai ki tum real-world product ko kaise sochte ho.

Example:

“Design Zomato food ordering system.”

Isme interviewer ko ye nahi chahiye ki tum random boxes bana do: API Gateway, Load Balancer, DB, Cache, Queue. Unhe dekhna hai:

  1. Tum requirements clarify karte ho ya nahi.
  2. Tum scale estimate kar sakte ho ya nahi.
  3. Tum database choose karne ka reason bata sakte ho ya nahi.
  4. Tum trade-offs samajhte ho ya bas YouTube diagram yaad kiya hai.
  5. Tum failure cases soch paate ho ya nahi.
  6. Tum latency, availability, consistency ka balance kar paate ho ya nahi.

India mein bahut candidates system design ko “ratta” bana dete hain. Design URL shortener, design WhatsApp, design Uber, bas templates yaad. Problem ye hai ki good interviewer thoda twist daal dega.

Jaise:

“Design WhatsApp, but assume 80 percent users are on bad network in Tier-2 and Tier-3 India.”

Ab yahan tumhe offline sync, message retry, delivery status, media compression, regional scale, cost optimization sab discuss karna padega.

2026 Mein System Design Itna Important Kyun Hai?#

Pehle system design sirf senior engineers se poocha jata tha. Ab India mein SDE-1.5 ya strong fresher roles mein bhi low-level design aur basic high-level design aa raha hai.

Reason simple hai: companies ko sirf code likhne wale log nahi chahiye. Unhe aise engineers chahiye jo product impact samjhe.

Razorpay mein payment reliability matters. PhonePe mein transaction scale matters. Swiggy mein location tracking aur order assignment matters. Zomato mein peak dinner traffic matters. Paytm mein wallet, UPI, KYC, fraud detection sab critical hai.

Agar ek engineer galat database choose karta hai, wrong caching strategy lagata hai, ya queue design weak hota hai, toh business ka direct loss hota hai.

2026 ke Indian hiring market mein system design ke through ye cheeze judge hoti hain:

  • Tum production incidents samajhte ho ya nahi.
  • Tum cloud cost ke baare mein sochte ho ya nahi.
  • Tum microservices blindly use karte ho ya reason ke saath.
  • Tum scale ke saath simplicity maintain kar sakte ho ya nahi.
  • Tum senior engineer jaisa communicate karte ho ya nahi.

₹12 LPA backend role mein basic design chalega. ₹30 LPA role mein trade-offs chahiye. ₹60 LPA plus role mein deep reasoning chahiye.

Kis Level Pe Kya Expected Hai?#

Sabse pehle apna level clear karo. SDE-1 aur SDE-3 ki preparation same nahi hoti.

System Design Interview Ka Standard Flow#

System design interview mein sabse badi galti hoti hai directly solution bolna. Interviewer ne bola “Design Uber”, candidate turant bolta hai “We will use Kafka, Redis, MongoDB, Kubernetes.” Bhai ruk jao.

Achha flow ye hota hai:

1. Requirements Clarify Karo

Pehle poochho:

  • Users kaun hain?
  • Main features kya hain?
  • Scale kitna assume karna hai?
  • Read-heavy hai ya write-heavy?
  • Real-time chahiye ya delay acceptable hai?
  • Strong consistency chahiye ya eventual chalega?
  • Payment involved hai kya?
  • Search involved hai kya?
  • Analytics chahiye kya?

Example: “Design Swiggy.”

Clarify:

  1. Customer food order kar sakta hai.
  2. Restaurant order accept karega.
  3. Delivery partner assign hoga.
  4. Live tracking chahiye.
  5. Payment online or COD.
  6. Notifications chahiye.
  7. Peak time 8 PM to 10 PM.

Isse interviewer ko dikhta hai ki tum product samajh rahe ho.

2. Scale Estimate Karo

Perfect math nahi chahiye, rough estimation chahiye.

Example:

  • Daily active users: 10 million
  • Orders per day: 2 million
  • Peak QPS: 5x average
  • Average order size: 2 KB metadata
  • Location updates: every 5 seconds per active delivery partner

Yahan tum soch rahe ho ki traffic kahan heavy hoga. Swiggy mein order creation se zyada location updates heavy ho sakte hain. Zomato mein search and menu browsing heavy ho sakta hai.

3. APIs Define Karo

Basic APIs:

POST /orders
GET /orders/\{orderId\}
POST /payments/initiate
POST /restaurants/\{id\}/accept
POST /delivery/assign
GET /tracking/\{orderId\}

Interview mein APIs likhne se clarity aati hai. Ye dikhata hai ki tumne system ko real product jaisa socha hai.

4. Data Model Banao

Basic tables ya collections:

Users
Restaurants
MenuItems
Orders
OrderItems
Payments
DeliveryPartners
DeliveryAssignments
LocationEvents
Notifications

Yahan mention karo ki kaunsa data relational DB mein jayega aur kaunsa NoSQL ya time-series store mein.

Example:

  • Orders and payments: relational DB, kyunki consistency important.
  • Location events: NoSQL or time-series store, kyunki high write volume.
  • Restaurant menu cache: Redis, fast reads ke liye.
  • Search index: Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.

5. High-Level Architecture Draw Karo

Typical components:

  • Mobile app or web client
  • API Gateway
  • Auth service
  • Order service
  • Payment service
  • Restaurant service
  • Delivery service
  • Notification service
  • Search service
  • Database
  • Cache
  • Queue
  • Monitoring

Par yaad rakho, architecture mein boxes kam, reasoning zyada.

6. Deep Dive Choose Karo

Interviewer usually bolega: “Let’s deep dive into delivery assignment” ya “How will you handle payment failure?”

Tumhe 1-2 areas deeply explain karne honge.

For example payment system:

  • Payment initiation
  • Payment provider call
  • Callback webhook
  • Idempotency key
  • Retry logic
  • Payment status reconciliation
  • Refund flow
  • Fraud checks

Yehi real interview ka weight hota hai.

2026 Ke Must-Know System Design Topics#

Agar tum India mein product company crack karna chahte ho, ye topics skip mat karo.

1. Load Balancing

Load balancer traffic ko multiple servers mein distribute karta hai.

Know:

  • Round robin
  • Least connections
  • Health checks
  • L4 vs L7 basics
  • Sticky sessions kab avoid karna hai

Example: Zomato dinner peak pe traffic spike hota hai. Single server gaya toh app crash. Load balancer plus autoscaling help karta hai.

2. Caching

Redis sab interviews ka hero hai, but cache galat use kiya toh data stale ho sakta hai.

Use cases:

  • Restaurant menu
  • User session
  • Product catalog
  • Search results
  • Rate limiting counters

Patterns:

  1. Cache-aside
  2. Write-through
  3. Write-back
  4. TTL-based expiry

Common question: “Menu price change hua, cache stale kaise handle karoge?”

Answer:

  • Short TTL
  • Cache invalidation event
  • Versioning
  • Admin update ke baad cache delete

3. Database Indexing

Agar tum database indexing explain nahi kar sakte, backend interview mein problem hogi.

Example:

SELECT * FROM orders WHERE user_id = 123 ORDER BY created_at DESC;

Index:

(user_id, created_at)

Explain karo:

  • Index read fast karta hai.
  • Write thoda slow kar sakta hai.
  • Too many indexes costly hote hain.
  • Composite index order matter karta hai.

4. SQL vs NoSQL

Simple rule:

SQL use karo jab:

  • Transactions important hain
  • Data structured hai
  • Joins useful hain
  • Consistency important hai

NoSQL use karo jab:

  • Very high write scale hai
  • Flexible schema chahiye
  • Horizontal scaling easy chahiye
  • Event logs ya document data hai

Example:

Paytm wallet ledger: SQL-like transactional store.

Swiggy delivery location events: NoSQL or time-series store.

5. Message Queues

Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS type systems asynchronous processing ke liye hote hain.

Use cases:

  • Send notifications
  • Process payments
  • Update analytics
  • Generate invoices
  • Fraud detection events
  • Order status updates

Example: User ne order place kiya. Order service ko turant response dena hai. Notification, invoice, analytics queue mein daal do.

Important concepts:

  • Producer
  • Consumer
  • Topic
  • Partition
  • Consumer group
  • Retry
  • Dead letter queue

6. Rate Limiting

Rate limiter abuse prevent karta hai.

Use cases:

  • Login attempts
  • OTP requests
  • Payment APIs
  • Public APIs
  • Coupon abuse

Algorithms:

  1. Token bucket
  2. Leaky bucket
  3. Fixed window
  4. Sliding window

India example: PhonePe OTP API pe rate limit nahi hoga toh spam aur cost dono badhega.

7. Idempotency

Payment interviews mein idempotency must hai.

Agar user ne “Pay” button 3 baar click kiya, payment 3 baar nahi hona chahiye. Iske liye idempotency key use hoti hai.

Example:

Idempotency-Key: order_123_payment_attempt_1

Server check karega ki is key se request already process hui ya nahi.

Razorpay, Stripe type payment systems mein ye very important hai.

8. Consistency

System design mein consistency ka matlab hai users ko same correct data dikhe.

Strong consistency:

  • Bank balance
  • Wallet
  • Stock trading
  • Payment status

Eventual consistency:

  • Like count
  • View count
  • Feed ranking
  • Analytics

Example: Paytm wallet balance wrong nahi dikha sakta. But Zomato restaurant rating 2 seconds late update ho, chalega.

9. Sharding

Jab ek database handle nahi kar pa raha, data multiple machines mein split karte hain.

Shard by:

  • user_id
  • region
  • restaurant_id
  • order_id hash

Warning: Sharding jaldi introduce mat karo. Interview mein bolo: “Start with single primary-replica setup, scale reads with replicas, then shard when data/write volume demands it.”

Ye mature answer lagta hai.

10. Observability

2026 interviews mein monitoring and logs ka mention important hai.

Discuss:

  • Metrics
  • Logs
  • Traces
  • Alerts
  • Dashboards
  • Error rate
  • Latency percentiles
  • P95, P99 latency

Example: Swiggy order placement latency P99 3 seconds se upar gaya, alert trigger.

India-Specific System Design Examples#

Yahan kuch interview questions aur unka thought process dekhte hain.

Design Swiggy Order System

Functional requirements:

  1. User restaurant browse kare.
  2. Cart create kare.
  3. Order place kare.
  4. Payment kare.
  5. Restaurant accept kare.
  6. Delivery partner assign ho.
  7. User live tracking dekhe.

Non-functional requirements:

  • High availability
  • Low latency browsing
  • Payment consistency
  • Peak traffic handling
  • Real-time delivery updates

Services:

  • User service
  • Restaurant service
  • Menu service
  • Cart service
  • Order service
  • Payment service
  • Delivery service
  • Tracking service
  • Notification service

Key trade-offs:

  • Menu cache fast hona chahiye.
  • Payment strong consistency chahiye.
  • Tracking eventual consistency chalega.
  • Delivery assignment near real-time chahiye.

Deep dive:

Delivery assignment mein factors:

  • Distance from restaurant
  • Partner availability
  • Current load
  • Vehicle type
  • Partner rating
  • Rain or surge
  • Estimated pickup time

Design PhonePe UPI System

Functional requirements:

  1. User send money kare.
  2. Bank account linked ho.
  3. UPI PIN verification.
  4. Transaction status.
  5. Refund or reversal support.
  6. Notifications.

Critical points:

  • Idempotency
  • Transaction ledger
  • Strong consistency
  • Audit logs
  • Fraud detection
  • Timeout handling
  • Reconciliation

Possible architecture:

  • API Gateway
  • Auth service
  • UPI transaction service
  • Bank connector service
  • Ledger service
  • Fraud service
  • Notification service
  • Reconciliation batch job

Important answer:

“Payment success tabhi mark karenge jab trusted bank or NPCI callback confirm kare. Agar timeout hua toh pending status, phir reconciliation.”

Ye line interviewer ko pasand aati hai.

Design Zomato Search

Requirements:

  • Search restaurants by name
  • Search by cuisine
  • Filter by location
  • Sort by rating, delivery time, offers
  • Handle typos
  • Personalized ranking

Components:

  • Search API
  • Restaurant DB
  • Search index
  • Location service
  • Ranking service
  • Cache

Use Elasticsearch or OpenSearch. Geo-indexing mention karo. Popular queries cache kar sakte ho.

Trade-off:

Fresh data vs fast search. Restaurant closed hua toh search mein immediately hide karna important hai. Rating update 1 minute late chalega.

High-Level Design vs Low-Level Design#

India mein candidates confuse hote hain HLD aur LLD mein.

High-Level Design

HLD mein focus hota hai:

  • Services
  • Databases
  • Scaling
  • APIs
  • Queues
  • Caches
  • Failures
  • Trade-offs

Example: Design Swiggy.

Low-Level Design

LLD mein focus hota hai:

  • Classes
  • Interfaces
  • Design patterns
  • Object relationships
  • Extensibility
  • Code structure

Example: Design parking lot, splitwise, snake ladder, elevator system.

2026 hiring mein SDE-2 ke liye dono aate hain. Service companies se product company switch kar rahe ho toh LLD strong karo, phir HLD build karo.

Best Resources for System Design 2026#

Free resources enough hain agar discipline hai.

YouTube Channels

  • Gaurav Sen
  • Tech Dummies Narendra L
  • ByteByteGo
  • System Design Fight Club
  • Engineering blogs of Uber, Netflix, Meta

Books

  1. Designing Data-Intensive Applications by Martin Kleppmann
  2. System Design Interview by Alex Xu
  3. Database Internals, optional advanced

DDIA beginner ke liye heavy hai. Pehle Alex Xu style problems karo, phir DDIA ke selected chapters.

Blogs to Read

  • Uber engineering blog
  • Netflix tech blog
  • Stripe engineering
  • Razorpay engineering blog
  • Swiggy bytes
  • Zomato tech blog
  • PhonePe tech blog

Indian company blogs read karna useful hai kyunki interviews mein Indian scale examples connect hote hain.

Common Mistakes Jo Candidates Karte Hain#

1. Tools Pe Jump Karna

“Kafka laga denge, Redis laga denge, Kubernetes laga denge.”

Interviewer sochega, reason kya hai bhai?

Better:

“Order placement synchronous rahega, but notification and analytics async karenge through queue, kyunki user response fast chahiye.”

2. Requirements Skip Karna

Question suna aur design start. Galat.

Pehle 5 minutes requirements clarify karo. Ye senior behavior hai.

3. Scale Estimate Nahi Karna

Agar QPS hi nahi pata toh scaling kaise justify karoge?

Rough numbers enough hain. Exact nahi chahiye.

4. Database Galat Choose Karna

Payments ko MongoDB mein casually daal diya, bina transaction discussion. Risky answer.

Payment, wallet, ledger, order status ke liye consistency discuss karo.

5. Failure Cases Ignore Karna

Production mein sab fail hota hai:

  • Payment callback delayed
  • Restaurant accept nahi karta
  • Delivery partner cancel karta
  • Cache down hota hai
  • Queue lag karta hai
  • DB replica stale hoti hai

Agar tum failure handling batate ho, tum instantly mature lagte ho.

6. Overengineering

Small app ke liye 20 microservices bana diye. Interviewer ko simplicity bhi chahiye.

Good line:

“Initially monolith or modular monolith enough hoga. Scale and team size grow hone ke baad services split karenge.”

7. Communication Weak

System design mein answer ka 50 percent communication hai. Agar tum soch rahe ho but bol nahi rahe, interviewer ko kaise pata chalega?

Use structure:

  1. “Let me clarify requirements.”
  2. “I’ll start with high-level design.”
  3. “Now I’ll deep dive into payment flow.”
  4. “Main trade-off here is consistency vs latency.”
  5. “Failure cases we should handle are…”

Sample Answer Structure: Design Paytm Wallet#

Agar interviewer bole “Design Paytm Wallet”, tum roughly aise start kar sakte ho:

“Pehle requirements clarify kar leta hoon. Users wallet mein money add kar sakte hain, merchant ko pay kar sakte hain, balance dekh sakte hain, transaction history dekh sakte hain, refund support chahiye. Since wallet money involved hai, strong consistency and auditability important hai.”

Then:

Functional requirements:

  1. Add money
  2. Pay merchant
  3. Check balance
  4. Transaction history
  5. Refund
  6. Notifications

Non-functional:

  1. High availability
  2. Strong consistency for balance
  3. Low latency for payments
  4. Audit logs
  5. Fraud detection
  6. Idempotency

Core services:

  • Wallet service
  • Ledger service
  • Payment gateway service
  • Merchant service
  • Notification service
  • Fraud service
  • Reconciliation service

Database:

  • Ledger table append-only
  • Wallet balance table
  • Transactions table
  • Idempotency table

Important point:

“Balance directly update karne ke saath append-only ledger maintain karenge. Ledger source of truth hoga, balance derived or cached ho sakta hai.”

Ye strong answer hai.

Failure cases:

  • Payment provider timeout
  • Duplicate request
  • Partial debit
  • Refund failure
  • Notification failure
  • Fraud flag

Interview Mein Diagrams Kaise Banao#

Agar online interview hai, Excalidraw, Miro, Google Jamboard, ya simple draw.io use kar sakte ho. Agar tool allowed nahi, Google Docs text diagram bhi okay hai.

Diagram tips:

  • Left to right flow rakho.
  • Client se start karo.
  • Services ko clearly label karo.
  • DB and cache separate dikhाओ.
  • Async queue dotted line ya separate arrow se dikhाओ.
  • Too many boxes mat banao.

Simple architecture:

Mobile App
   |
API Gateway
   |
Order Service ---- Redis Cache
   |
Order DB
   |
Event Queue
   |
Notification Service, Analytics Service, Delivery Service

Phir deep dive:

Order Service
   |
Payment Service
   |
Payment Provider
   |
Webhook Handler
   |
Payment Status DB

Salary Impact: System Design Strong Hone Se Kya Difference?#

India mein system design strong hone ka direct salary impact hai.

Example:

  • Backend developer with only CRUD knowledge: ₹8 LPA to ₹15 LPA
  • Backend developer with DSA plus basic system design: ₹15 LPA to ₹28 LPA
  • SDE-2 with strong system design: ₹30 LPA to ₹55 LPA
  • Senior engineer with distributed systems depth: ₹60 LPA to ₹1 Cr
  • Staff engineer or principal roles: ₹1 Cr plus possible in top companies

TCS, Infosys, Wipro mein bhi cloud modernization, microservices, banking projects, telecom platforms mein system design useful hai. Product companies mein toh non-negotiable hai.

Agar tum service company se product company switch karna chahte ho, system design tumhara biggest bridge ban sakta hai.

2026 Preparation Checklist#

Interview se pehle ye checklist tick karo:

  • Main requirements clarify kar sakta hoon.
  • Main rough scale estimate kar sakta hoon.
  • Main APIs define kar sakta hoon.
  • Main SQL vs NoSQL justify kar sakta hoon.
  • Main caching strategy explain kar sakta hoon.
  • Main queue and async flow explain kar sakta hoon.
  • Main rate limiter design kar sakta hoon.
  • Main payment idempotency explain kar sakta hoon.
  • Main failure cases handle kar sakta hoon.
  • Main monitoring metrics mention kar sakta hoon.
  • Main diagram clearly explain kar sakta hoon.
  • Main at least 10 designs practice kar chuka hoon.

Final Bhai Advice#

System design ek din mein nahi aata. Par 30-45 din disciplined practice se tum interview-ready ho sakte ho. Har design mein same framework follow karo: requirements, scale, APIs, data model, architecture, deep dive, trade-offs, failures.

Agar tum 2026 mein India ke product roles target kar rahe ho, DSA ke saath system design ko equal priority do. DSA tumhe interview tak le jaata hai, system design tumhe senior salary band mein push karta hai.

Aur haan, resume bhi utna hi important hai. System design aata hai par resume ATS mein reject ho gaya toh interview milega hi nahi. Apna resume free mein check karo: JobRise Free ATS Checker
