ATS Checker Free India: Check Your Resume Score Before Applying (2026)

You applied to 50 jobs. Zero replies.

Not even a rejection email.

Your resume is probably getting auto-rejected by ATS (Applicant Tracking System) before any human sees it. This happens to 75% of resumes in India.

I'll show you exactly how to check if your resume will pass ATS, and how to fix it in the next 10 minutes.

What Is ATS and Why Should You Care?#

ATS is software that companies use to filter resumes automatically.

It scans your resume for keywords, checks formatting, and gives you a score. If your score is below 60-70%, your resume goes straight to trash.

No human will ever see it.

This is why you're not getting interview calls even though you meet the job requirements.

Companies Using ATS in India

Almost every big company uses ATS:

  • TCS, Infosys, Wipro (all mass recruiters)
  • Accenture, Cognizant, HCL
  • Amazon, Microsoft, Google India
  • Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato
  • HDFC, ICICI, Axis Bank
  • Even 500-person startups in Bangalore

If you're applying through Naukri, LinkedIn, or company career pages, ATS is scanning your resume first.

How ATS Rejects Your Resume (The Real Reasons)#

1. Keyword Mismatch

The JD says "Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs" but your resume says "Core Java, Backend Development."

Same skill. Different words.

ATS thinks you don't have the required skills. Rejected.

2. Bad Formatting

You used:

  • Tables or columns (ATS can't read them)
  • Graphics or images
  • Fancy fonts or headers
  • Text boxes
  • PDF exported from Canva

ATS tries to parse your resume and gets confused. It can't extract your information properly. Rejected.

3. Missing Standard Sections

ATS looks for specific section names:

  • Work Experience (not "My Journey")
  • Education (not "Academic Background")
  • Skills (not "What I Know")

If it can't find these, it assumes your resume is incomplete. Rejected.

4. Wrong File Format

Many Indian companies still can't parse PDFs properly (especially government PSUs and old companies).

They want .docx files. You sent PDF. Rejected.

How to Check Your Resume ATS Score (Free)#

There are paid tools like Jobscan ($90/month) but you're a broke fresher. Here's what works for free:

Method 1: JobRise Free ATS Checker (Recommended)

  1. Go to JobRise ATS Checker
  2. Upload your resume (PDF or DOCX)
  3. Paste the job description
  4. Get your score in 30 seconds

Shows you:

  • Exact ATS score (0-100)
  • Which keywords are missing
  • What ATS can't read
  • Which sections need fixing

Used by 12,000+ Indian students. Free to use.

Method 2: Copy-Paste Test (Manual)

  1. Open your resume PDF
  2. Try to copy-paste all text into Notepad
  3. Does it look readable?

If your text comes out scrambled, ATS can't read it either.

If your tables turn into a mess, ATS is failing to parse your resume.

Method 3: Keyword Match Test

  1. Copy all text from the JD
  2. Paste into Word/Google Docs
  3. Copy all text from your resume
  4. Paste below the JD
  5. Use Find (Ctrl+F) to search for important keywords

If a required skill appears in the JD but not in your resume, you're losing points.

What's a Good ATS Score?#

  • Below 50: Your resume is definitely getting rejected
  • 50-70: Borderline. Might pass for some jobs, fail for others
  • 70-85: Good. You'll get through ATS at most companies
  • 85+: Great. ATS is not your problem

Most Indian freshers score 30-45 on their first try.

After fixing with proper keywords and formatting, they reach 75-90.

How to Fix Your Resume for ATS (Step by Step)#

Step 1: Use Standard Section Names

Change these immediately:

Bad:

  • "About Me" → Work Experience
  • "My Skills" → Skills
  • "Where I Studied" → Education
  • "My Projects" → Projects

ATS looks for these exact words. Don't get creative.

Step 2: Add Missing Keywords

Open the JD. Find every technical keyword:

JD says: "Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, MySQL, Git, Agile"

Your resume MUST have all 6 keywords. Exactly as written.

Not "Java programming" or "SQL databases." Use the exact words from the JD.

Where to add them:

  • Skills section (obvious)
  • Project descriptions (better)
  • Work experience bullet points (best)

Example:

Bad bullet: "Built a backend application with database integration"

Good bullet: "Developed REST APIs using Spring Boot and Java, integrated with MySQL database, deployed on AWS using Git for version control"

Same project. Added 5 ATS keywords.

Step 3: Fix Your Resume Format

Use this safe format:

  • Single column layout (no side bars)
  • Standard fonts only (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman)
  • No tables or text boxes
  • No graphics or images
  • Clear section headers
  • Save as .docx (not PDF, unless applying through LinkedIn)

Step 4: Remove ATS-Breaking Elements

Delete these immediately:

  • Profile photo (common in Indian resumes, but ATS hates it)
  • Tables with experience timeline
  • Columns (skills on left, experience on right)
  • Headers and footers with page numbers
  • Text boxes for achievements
  • Any graphics or charts

These might look good to you, but ATS can't parse them.

Step 5: Use Action Verbs

Start every bullet point with a strong verb:

  • Developed (not "Was responsible for developing")
  • Implemented (not "Helped implement")
  • Designed (not "Assisted in design")
  • Optimized (not "Worked on optimization")

ATS likes clean, direct language.

Common ATS Mistakes by Indian Freshers#

Mistake 1: Calling It a "CV"

Indian students call it CV. American companies call it resume.

Use "resume" in your filename: Priya_Sharma_Resume.pdf

Not: CV_Final_Updated_2026.pdf

Mistake 2: Personal Details Overload

Indian resumes list:

  • Father's name
  • Date of birth
  • Marital status
  • Permanent address

ATS doesn't care. These take up space and add zero keywords.

Remove them. Add more project details instead.

Mistake 3: Using Percentage Without Context

"Achieved 85% in B.Tech"

ATS doesn't know what this means. Is 85% good or bad?

Better: "Graduated with First Class (85%) in Computer Science"

Mistake 4: Listing Skills You Don't Use

You learned C in 1st year. Haven't touched it in 3 years.

But you put "C Programming" in your skills list because it makes the list longer.

JD says "C Programming" (rare these days). ATS matches it. You get the interview.

Interviewer asks about C. You forgot everything. You fail.

Only list skills you've actually used in projects.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Soft Skills

JD says: "Strong communication skills, team player"

Your resume has zero mention of teamwork or communication.

ATS looks for these words too. Add them:

"Collaborated with 4-member team to deliver project 2 weeks ahead of schedule"

Same project. Now it has ATS keywords for teamwork and deadlines.

Should You Use ChatGPT to Fix Your Resume?#

Yes, but it's risky.

ChatGPT can help you rewrite bullet points with better keywords. But it doesn't know what ATS actually checks for.

It might:

  • Add skills you don't have (dangerous)
  • Make your resume too generic
  • Remove important project details
  • Use American English (not bad, but check)

Better: Use a tool built specifically for ATS, like JobRise Resume Builder.

It's free for freshers. Upload your resume, select the job type, get ATS-optimized suggestions.

What to Do After You Pass ATS#

Passing ATS is step 1. You still need:

  1. Tailored cover letter - Most Indian freshers skip this. Big mistake. Use JobRise Cover Letter Generator (free for first use)

  2. LinkedIn optimization - Recruiters check LinkedIn after reading your resume. Use JobRise LinkedIn Optimizer

  3. Cold emails to recruiters - Don't just apply and wait. Message recruiters directly. Use JobRise Cold Email Generator

  4. Interview prep - Got the call? Now you need to not mess it up. Use JobRise Mock Interview for company-specific practice

FAQs#

Is JobRise ATS Checker really free?

The basic check is 100% free. Upload resume, get your score.

If you want the full AI report (exactly which keywords to add, which sections to rewrite), that's ₹199.

But the free score is enough to know if you're in the safe zone or not.

Which file format is best for ATS?

.docx is safest. Always send .docx unless:

  • Job posting specifically says "PDF only"
  • You're applying through LinkedIn (they handle PDFs well)
  • It's a design job (PDFs preserve formatting)

For TCS, Infosys, Wipro and most Indian mass recruiters: send .docx

Can I use the same resume for all jobs?

No. Bad idea.

Every JD has different keywords. You need to customize your resume for each application.

This doesn't mean rewriting everything. Just:

  • Update the skills section to match JD keywords
  • Reorder your projects (put most relevant one first)
  • Add 1-2 keywords to each project bullet

Takes 5 minutes. Doubles your ATS score.

Do government jobs use ATS?

Not usually. Most PSUs (BHEL, NTPC, ONGC, etc.) still use manual screening.

But private companies advertising on NAUKRI or LinkedIn? 100% using ATS.

What if my resume scores above 80 but I'm still not getting calls?

Then ATS is not your problem. Check:

  1. Are you applying to jobs that match your experience level?
  2. Is your LinkedIn profile updated?
  3. Are you applying within 48 hours of the posting? (Old applications get ignored)
  4. Are you following up with recruiters?
