HR Salary and Job Market in India 2026
You are weighing an HR offer in India and you cannot tell whether the number is fair, because almost nobody posts pay in job ads. As of 14 October 2026, the JobRise live jobs feed shows 29 open HR jobs in India, and not one of those listings displays a salary.
That silence is normal in this market. It is also the reason you have to do your own research before the recruiter call, not during it.
What the listings actually show#
This is a dated snapshot of JobRise's live listings, not a market survey. Counts move daily, so treat them as a picture of one morning.
- Open HR listings in India: 29, all full-time
- Posted in the last 30 days: 20, with 19 of those in the last 7 days
- Entry-level titles such as intern, graduate, junior or trainee: 0 of 29
- Top cities: Bengaluru (8), Gurugram (6), Mumbai (4), Thane (2), Navi Mumbai (1)
- Companies with the most open listings: Mongodb (6), Datamark, Inc. (6), Rentokil Initial (4), Stripe (3), Bosch Group (2), TORQCOMMODITIES (1), Okta (1), Laundryheap (1), Envalior (1), Side (1)
Two things stand out. Hiring is concentrated in Bengaluru and Gurugram, and the roles skew mid-level and above. Titles range from "Associate, HR Shared Services" at Mongodb and "HR Associate (supporting global HR operations)" at Laundryheap to "Human Resources (HR) Manager" at TORQCOMMODITIES, "Senior Talent Acquisition Manager" at Datamark, Inc., and "Digital Solutions Manager (Recruiting Tech & Learning Platforms)" at Okta. There is also specialist work like "Contract Technical Recruiter" at Mongodb, "HR Specialist" at Datamark, Inc., and "Officer HR& Admin" at Envalior.
Some of those names are recruiters or staffing firms rather than the end employer. Ask who the payroll entity is before you compare offers. A contract recruiter role through an agency and an in-house HRBP role at the same brand are different jobs with different risk.
For wider context, the JobRise Hiring Report: India shows 1,867 open listings across all categories, with 1,345 posted in the last 30 days. HR is a thin slice of that, so a single employer posting six roles can move the numbers a lot.

Typical reported pay ranges by seniority#
No listing in this slice shows a salary, so the ranges below are not drawn from these ads. They are typical figures reported by candidates and employers for full-time HR roles in metros, and they vary widely by industry, company size and city. Verify against current sources before you rely on any of them.
- HR Associate or Executive: roughly 25,000 to 45,000 INR per month
- HR Generalist or Specialist: roughly 40,000 to 75,000 INR per month
- Senior HR Executive or Assistant Manager: roughly 60,000 to 1,00,000 INR per month
- HR Manager: roughly 8,00,000 to 16,00,000 INR per year
- Senior HR Manager or HRBP: roughly 15,00,000 to 28,00,000 INR per year
- Head of HR for a mid-size firm: roughly 25,00,000 to 50,00,000 INR per year
Global capability centres and tech employers usually sit at the top of each band. Manufacturing, staffing and traditional services often sit lower. Bengaluru and Gurugram tend to pay above Mumbai and Thane for comparable scope, though the gap is smaller than people assume.
How Indian pay packages are built#
The number quoted to you is almost always CTC, or cost to company. That is not your take-home. CTC can include employer PF contributions, gratuity accrual, insurance premiums the company pays, and sometimes a retention bonus paid only after two or three years.
Ask for the fixed versus variable split in writing. Variable pay in HR roles is commonly 10 to 25 percent of fixed, tied to company and individual performance, and it is rarely guaranteed. A 13th month salary is common in some multinational and BPO setups but is not a legal right, so check the offer letter wording.
Superannuation, or PF, applies under the Employees' Provident Funds Act. Do not guess the numbers yourself. Check the current rates and wage ceiling on the official EPFO website. Gratuity rules are in the Payment of Gratuity Act, again on an official government source.
Equity or RSUs show up in listed global firms and some startups. Treat them as upside, not salary. Ask about grant size, vesting schedule, and what happens to unvested stock if you leave.
Negotiating the offer#
Start by naming a range only after you know the fixed CTC and the role's scope. Say: "Based on the scope we discussed and comparable HR manager roles in Bengaluru, I was expecting a fixed CTC in the range of 14 to 16 lakh INR per year. Can you tell me where this offer sits against that?" Then stop talking and let them respond.
If the fixed number is firm, negotiate the rest. A joining bonus, a review after six months instead of twelve, relocation support, or a better title all cost the employer less than raising base pay. Get every commitment in the offer letter, because verbal promises about early reviews tend to evaporate.
Never accept on the first call. Ask for 48 hours, compare the full structure, then come back with one clear request rather than five small ones. Our free salary negotiation guide walks through the exact wording for counteroffers and for handling the "what are your expectations" question.
One blunt point: if an employer refuses to share the salary band before interviews, you will be negotiating blind. Ask once, politely. If they still stall, factor that into whether you want to work there.
A worked example#
Here is how to turn a vague resume line into something an HR hiring manager will actually read.
Before: "Responsible for recruitment and onboarding activities in the company."
After: "Hired 42 roles across sales and operations in 12 months, cutting average time-to-fill from 61 to 38 days by rebuilding the referral scheme and running weekly hiring syncs with three business heads."
The second version gives scope, a timeframe, and a result you can defend in the interview. Do this for every role, and use the same numbers when you argue for a higher band.
Checklist before you say yes#
- Confirm the payroll entity, especially if a staffing firm is involved
- Get the fixed CTC, variable percentage, and monthly take-home estimate in writing
- Ask which benefits are included in CTC and which are on top
- Check PF, gratuity and leave policy against official sources, not word of mouth
- Clarify notice period, probation length, and whether the review date is guaranteed
- Ask who you report to and how large the HR team is
FAQ#
Is 29 open HR listings a lot for India?
No. Against 1,867 open listings across all categories in India on the same date, HR is a small share. Treat the count as a snapshot of one feed on 14 October 2026, not as a market-wide total.
Why does no HR listing show a salary?
Indian employers rarely post pay bands in job ads, and the JobRise HR slice reflects that. You have to ask for the band early, or research comparable ranges and negotiate from your own numbers.
What is the difference between CTC and take-home?
CTC is the total cost to the employer, including employer PF, gratuity accrual and insurance. Take-home is what lands in your bank account each month after your own deductions. Always ask for a monthly take-home estimate alongside the CTC figure.
Should I quote my current salary when asked?
Give a range for what you want, not your current number. If pressed, say: "I would rather focus on the scope of this role. Based on that, I am looking at 14 to 16 lakh INR per year fixed." Current salary tends to anchor the offer downward.
Are contract HR roles worth taking?
They can be, if the pay premium is real and the contract length is clear. Ask who the employer of record is, what happens at contract end, and whether conversion to full-time is common or just possible.
