HR Salary and Job Market in the US 2026
You are looking at HR jobs in the US and the pay numbers are almost invisible. On 14 October 2026, the HR jobs hub on JobRise showed 179 open listings in United States, and only 6 of those 179 listings showed any salary at all. That gap is the whole story of this market right now.
This is a snapshot of live listings, not a market survey. Counts move daily. Treat what follows as a dated read on demand, then verify pay against current sources before you sit down at a table.
What the demand actually looks like#
Of the 179 open listings, 129 were posted in the last 30 days and 68 in the last 7 days. That pace suggests active hiring, not a stale board. Job types break down as Full-time (149), Part-time (28), Contract (2).
Companies with the most open listings in this slice: Slate (13), Brex (11), Headstart Health (10), Datadog (8), Enterprise Electrical (6), Pacific Health Group (5), Ramp (5), KBR (4), Mongodb (4), Benchmark Utility Services (4). Some of these are recruiters or staffing firms, so a listing may not mean direct employment at that name.
Cities concentrate hard. New York (24), San Francisco (21), Chicago (7), Seattle (7), Dallas (5). New York and San Francisco together account for 45 of the listings. If you are geographically flexible, you have more surface area to hit.
One more signal worth sitting with: 0 of 179 listings carried entry-level titles like intern, graduate, junior, or trainee. The roles showing up ask for experience. Plan your search accordingly.

The posted salaries, quoted exactly#
Here is every salary shown in this slice, exactly as posted:
- "Technical Sourcer - Part time/Contract" at Patreon: $75, $85 per hour
- "Senior Recruiter | G&A" at Ramp: $165K, $220K • Offers Equity
- "Associate GTM Recruiter" at Ramp: $96K, $125K
- "Senior Recruiter, Emerging Talent" at Ramp: $125K, $230K • Offers Equity
- "Senior/Lead Recruiter | GTM" at Ramp: $204K, $280K • Offers Equity
- "Technical Recruiter | Engineering" at Ramp: $158K, $230K • Offers Equity
Five of the six come from one employer. That is not a market average, it is one company's bands. Still, the spread within a single firm tells you something: a senior/lead GTM recruiter band tops out at $280K while an associate GTM band tops out at $125K. Scope and seniority move the ceiling more than the job family does.
Typical reported ranges by seniority#
Beyond the posted numbers above, you will see reported ranges in conversations, salary threads, and offer data across the US. Treat these as directional, not promised:
- HR coordinator or recruiter coordinator: often roughly $50K to $75K base, higher in coastal metros
- HR generalist or HR business partner, mid-level: often roughly $80K to $120K base
- Senior recruiter or senior HRBP: often roughly $120K to $190K base, with tech and GTM recruiting pushing higher
- HR manager or people ops manager: often roughly $110K to $160K base
- Director of HR or head of people: often roughly $160K to $250K+ base, with wide variance by company size
These ranges vary by city, industry, and company stage. Verify against current official postings and live data before you anchor to any of them. For a wider read on country-level hiring, the JobRise Hiring Report for United States tracks 13,720 open listings across all categories, with 8,471 posted in the last 30 days.
How US HR pay is structured#
Base salary is the spine. Around it, US offers typically add some mix of bonus, equity, and benefits, and the mix matters as much as the headline.
Annual bonus is common in HR roles at mid-size and large employers, usually a target percentage of base that scales with level and company performance. Equity shows up in tech and growth companies, and the Ramp listings above say so directly with "Offers Equity". Read the grant size, the vesting schedule, and the current 409A or share value before you count it as money.
Benefits carry real dollar value. Medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) match, and paid leave differ sharply between employers. A lower base with strong coverage can beat a higher base with poor coverage once you run the numbers.
Two notes on terms you may see. CTC (cost to company) is more common in Indian job postings than US ones; in the US you will usually see base, bonus target, and equity stated separately. A 13th month salary and superannuation are not US norms; the closest US analogs are a year-end bonus and a 401(k) plan. Do not expect either foreign term to appear in a US offer letter.
Some roles carry sign-on bonuses or shift premiums. One example in this snapshot: "RBT Afternoons, Sign on Bonus $500" at Headstart Health. Read the clawback terms before you spend a sign-on bonus, since many employers require repayment if you leave within a set period.
How to negotiate the offer#
Start with the range, not your last salary. In many US states and cities, employers are barred from asking about your salary history, and some must post pay ranges. Use the posted numbers and the reported ranges above to set a target, then state it as a range you can defend.
Anchor near the top of the plausible band, not at your minimum. If the band is $125K to $190K and your research supports it, asking for $180K is not rude. It is a normal opening in a professional negotiation.
Push on the full package when base is capped. Bonus target, equity grant, sign-on, remote flexibility, and title are all negotiable levers. The negotiation tool on JobRise walks through these levers step by step when you want a script to work from.
Get every number in writing before you resign anything. Verbal offers get revised. The written offer letter is the only version that counts.
A worked example#
Say you are considering "Associate GTM Recruiter" at Ramp, posted at $96K, $125K. You have four years of recruiting experience and you currently earn $105K.
Weak move: "I was hoping for something around $115K." That anchors low and centers your past pay.
Stronger move: "Based on the posted band and my four years of full-cycle GTM recruiting, I would be comfortable signing at $122K. If base is fixed, I would like to discuss the bonus target and equity grant to close the gap."
The second version names a specific number near the top of the posted band, ties it to the requirements, and opens a fallback path. That is the pattern to copy.
A short plan before you apply#
- Pick two or three target cities, since New York and San Francisco dominate this snapshot
- Filter to Full-time if that is your goal, since 149 of 179 listings are full-time
- Note the 0 entry-level listings and adjust titles you search for accordingly
- Track the 6 posted salaries above as reference points, not as guaranteed bands
- Verify each range against the employer's current posting and official sources
- Prepare one number you would sign at, and one fallback package you would accept
