Your Resume Is 3 Pages Long. No One Is Reading Past Page 1.#

Let's be honest. You're a fresher with zero full-time experience, and your resume somehow stretches to 3 pages. You've added your school address, your hobbies ("reading books, listening to music"), your father's name, and a declaration signed with a date.

Every recruiter in India who sees that resume closes it after page 1. Most close it after 30 seconds.

Here's the truth about one page resumes in India: if you have less than 5 years of experience, your resume should be one page. Period. No exceptions. Not "ideally one page." Not "try to keep it short." One page.

This guide will show you exactly how to fit everything important onto a single page without it looking cramped or empty.

Why One Page? Because Recruiters Spend 7 Seconds on Your Resume.#

A study by Ladders found that recruiters spend an average of 7.4 seconds on an initial resume scan. Not minutes. Seconds.

At TCS, Infosys, and Wipro mass hiring drives, a single recruiter might review 200+ resumes in a day. They are not reading your 3 page life story. They are scanning for:

  1. Your name and contact info
  2. Your degree and college
  3. Your skills (do they match the JD?)
  4. Your projects or internships
  5. Your CGPA or percentage

That's it. Everything else is noise.

What Happens When You Submit a 3-Page Resume

  • ATS systems parse all 3 pages, but the scoring algorithm weighs content on page 1 most heavily
  • Recruiters at mass hiring skip to the next resume. They literally don't have time.
  • Startup founders think you can't prioritize information. Bad sign for a potential hire.
  • HR managers at companies like Deloitte and Accenture have told us directly: "If a fresher sends more than one page, it shows they don't know what's important."

The One Page Resume Rule: Who Should Follow It?#

One page resume is a MUST for:

  • College students applying for internships
  • Freshers (0-2 years experience)
  • Career switchers entering a new field
  • Anyone applying to mass hiring drives (TCS NQT, Infosys InfyTQ, Wipro NLTH)

Two pages might be okay for:

  • People with 5+ years of experience
  • Academics with publications
  • People with extensive project portfolios in specialized fields

If you're reading this as a fresher, you need one page. Let's make it happen.

What to Include on Your One Page Resume#

Here's the exact order of sections, ranked by importance for Indian freshers:

1. Contact Information (3-4 lines max)

Priya Sharma
+91-98765-43210 | [email protected]
LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/priyasharma | GitHub: github.com/priyasharma
Bangalore, Karnataka

What to cut:

  • Full home address (city and state is enough)
  • Date of birth
  • Father's name
  • Marital status
  • Passport number
  • Photograph

None of these help you get shortlisted. They just waste space.

2. Professional Summary (2-3 lines)

Skip the "Career Objective" section. Nobody reads "To obtain a challenging position where I can utilize my skills." That tells the recruiter nothing.

Instead, write a 2-3 line summary with your key skills and what you bring:

Good:

B.Tech Computer Science graduate from VIT Vellore with hands-on experience in Python, React.js, and MySQL. Built 3 full-stack projects including an e-commerce platform handling 1000+ product listings. Seeking a Software Engineer role.

Bad:

To obtain a challenging position in a reputed organization where I can utilize my skills and contribute to the growth of the company.

The good version has keywords (Python, React.js, MySQL), numbers (3 projects, 1000+ listings), and specifics. The bad version could be written by anyone for any job.

3. Education (4-6 lines)

B.Tech Computer Science Engineering 2022-2026
VIT Vellore | CGPA: 8.2/10

Class XII (CBSE) 2022
Delhi Public School, Noida | 92.4%

Space-saving tips:

  • Put degree and year on the same line
  • Skip Class X unless you scored above 90%
  • Don't list individual subjects or semester-wise marks
  • Don't include your enrollment number

4. Skills (3-4 lines)

Organize into categories. This helps both ATS and human readers:

Languages: Python, Java, JavaScript, SQL
Frameworks: React.js, Node.js, Express.js, Django
Tools: Git, VS Code, Postman, Docker
Databases: MySQL, MongoDB, Firebase

What to cut:

  • "MS Office" (everyone knows it, it's assumed)
  • "Operating Systems: Windows, Linux" (not a skill for most roles)
  • "Soft skills: Communication, Teamwork, Leadership" (show these through examples, don't list them)

5. Projects (6-10 lines, 2-3 projects)

This is where freshers win or lose. Your projects section replaces the experience section.

Format each project like this:

E-Commerce Platform | React.js, Node.js, MongoDB Jan 2026
- Built a full-stack e-commerce app with user auth, product search, and cart functionality
- Implemented payment integration using Razorpay API, handling 500+ test transactions
- Deployed on AWS EC2 with 99.5% uptime over 3 months

Tips:

  • Start each bullet with an action verb (Built, Implemented, Designed, Created)
  • Include numbers wherever possible (500+ transactions, 3 months, 99.5% uptime)
  • List the tech stack right after the project name
  • 2-3 bullet points per project is enough

For more on writing strong resume bullets, check our resume action verbs guide.

6. Internships / Experience (if any, 3-5 lines)

If you have an internship, put it here. If not, skip this section entirely. Don't leave a blank "Experience" section.

Web Development Intern | StartupXYZ, Bangalore May-Jul 2025
- Developed 5 REST APIs using Node.js and Express, reducing page load time by 40%
- Collaborated with a 4-member team to ship a dashboard feature used by 200+ daily users

7. Certifications (2-3 lines, only if relevant)

AWS Cloud Practitioner | Amazon Web Services 2025
Data Structures and Algorithms | Coding Ninjas 2025

Only include certifications that are relevant to the job. Your "Introduction to Philosophy" MOOC from Coursera is not helping.

8. Achievements (2-3 lines, only strong ones)

- Won Smart India Hackathon 2025, built an AI-powered crop disease detection system
- Ranked in top 5% on LeetCode (1800+ rating, 400+ problems solved)

If your achievements are "participated in college fest" or "member of coding club," leave them out. They don't add value.

What to Remove from Your Resume Right Now#

Here's a checklist. If any of these are on your resume, delete them today:

Delete Immediately

  1. "Declaration: I hereby declare that the above information is true..." This is not a legal document. It's a resume.

  2. "Hobbies: Reading books, listening to music, playing cricket" Unless you're applying to be a librarian, DJ, or cricketer, this is wasted space.

  3. Your photograph. Indian companies don't need it. It wastes space and can introduce unconscious bias.

  4. "References: Available upon request" Obviously they are. This adds nothing.

  5. Father's name and date of birth. These were common on resumes 10 years ago. Not anymore.

  6. Full home address. City and state is enough. Nobody is mailing you a letter.

  7. Class X marks (if below 85%). If you scored 78% in Class X but 90%+ in XII, just skip X entirely.

  8. Multiple email addresses or phone numbers. One of each is enough.

  9. "Strengths: Hardworking, team player, quick learner" Every single fresher writes this. It means nothing.

  10. Semester-wise SGPA breakdown. Your final CGPA is enough.

Formatting Tricks to Fit Everything on One Page#

Even after cutting the fluff, you might still be spilling onto page 2. Here are formatting tricks that keep your resume ATS-friendly and compact:

Font and Size

  • Use 10-11pt font size for body text (never go below 10pt)
  • Use 12-14pt for your name at the top
  • Use 11-12pt for section headings
  • Stick with Calibri, Arial, or Garamond. These are readable at smaller sizes.

For a detailed guide on fonts, read our resume font and size guide.

Margins

  • 0.5 to 0.75 inch margins on all sides work well
  • Don't go below 0.5 inches. It looks cramped and some printers cut it off.
  • Default Word/Docs margins (1 inch) waste a lot of space. Reduce them.

Spacing

  • Single line spacing or 1.15 spacing within sections
  • 6-8pt spacing between sections (not a full blank line)
  • Don't double-space anything. This isn't a school essay.

Columns

Warning: Two-column layouts look nice but most ATS systems can't read them properly. The text from column 1 and column 2 gets mixed up.

Stick with a single-column layout. It's safer for ATS and easier for recruiters to scan top to bottom.

If you want to know more about ATS-friendly formatting, check our ATS resume format guide.

Bullet Points

  • Use simple round bullet points (not squares, arrows, or custom symbols)
  • Keep each bullet to 1-2 lines max
  • Start with an action verb
  • Include a number or result whenever possible

Common Mistakes When Making a One Page Resume#

1. Shrinking Font to 8pt to Fit Everything

If you need to go below 10pt to fit on one page, you need to cut content, not shrink text. An 8pt resume is unreadable and shows poor prioritization.

2. Removing All White Space

A wall of text with zero breathing room is just as bad as a 3-page resume. Leave small gaps between sections. Your resume needs to be scannable.

3. Using Abbreviations Nobody Understands

"Worked on ML proj using TF and KRS for NLP tasks" means nothing to a non-technical HR person doing initial screening. Write out "Machine Learning project using TensorFlow and Keras for Natural Language Processing."

4. Listing Every Technology You've Touched

If you spent 2 hours on a tutorial for Go lang, don't list Go on your resume. Only list skills you can confidently discuss in an interview.

5. Making the Summary Too Long

Your summary should be 2-3 lines. If it's a full paragraph, it defeats the purpose. Be specific and direct.

How ATS Handles One Page vs Multi-Page Resumes#

ATS systems like Taleo (used by TCS), SuccessFactors (Infosys), and Workday (Wipro) do parse multi-page resumes. But here's what happens:

  1. Keyword density matters. A 3-page resume with the same keywords as a 1-page resume will have a lower keyword density score.

  2. Section identification. ATS sometimes fails to identify sections correctly when content flows across pages. Page breaks can split a section header from its content.

  3. Recruiter view. When a recruiter opens your parsed resume in the ATS dashboard, they see a plain-text version. On a 3-page resume, this plain text view is long and hard to scan.

  4. Upload limits. Some company portals (especially on Naukri) have file size limits. Longer resumes with formatting tend to be larger files.

The bottom line: one page is better for both ATS and human readers.

Real Examples: Before and After#

Before (2.5 pages)

A B.Tech CSE student from SRM sent us their resume for review. It had:

  • Full address with pin code
  • Father's name and date of birth
  • Career objective (5 lines)
  • Class X, XII, and all semester SGPAs
  • 8 skills including "MS Word" and "Operating Systems"
  • 4 projects with 5 bullets each
  • Hobbies section
  • Declaration with date and place

After (1 page)

We helped them trim it to one page:

  • Contact: Name, phone, email, LinkedIn, city (2 lines)
  • Summary: 3 lines with key skills and a strong project mention
  • Education: B.Tech with CGPA and XII with percentage (3 lines)
  • Skills: 4 categories, relevant technologies only (4 lines)
  • Projects: 2 strongest projects, 2-3 bullets each (8 lines)
  • Certifications: AWS and a relevant Coursera course (2 lines)
  • Achievement: Hackathon win (1 line)

The result? Their ATS score went from 38 to 74 just by restructuring. No new content was added. They just removed the fluff and focused on what matters.

Section Priority: What to Cut First#

If you're still over one page after following this guide, here's the order of what to cut:

  1. Hobbies and interests (cut entirely)
  2. Declaration (cut entirely)
  3. Class X marks (cut if space is tight)
  4. Weakest project (keep your 2 strongest)
  5. Extra certifications (keep top 2 most relevant)
  6. Weaker achievements (keep only impressive ones)
  7. Third bullet point on projects (trim to 2 bullets each)

Never cut:

  • Contact information
  • Education (degree + college)
  • Top 2 projects
  • Relevant skills

These are non-negotiable on any resume.
