Getting Laid Off Doesn't Mean You're a Bad Employee#
Let's get this out of the way first. If you got laid off, it's not your fault.
In the last few years, some of India's biggest companies have done mass layoffs. Byju's let go of thousands. Swiggy, Ola, Meesho, Unacademy, Vedantu, Chargebee, all had rounds of cuts. Even TCS and Infosys had "workforce optimization" cycles. This isn't about you being bad at your job. This is about companies making financial decisions.
But here's the problem. Your resume now has a gap. And in India, gaps get questioned. Hard.
Indian recruiters have a bias against gaps. It's unfair, but it's real. A 6-month gap can make them wonder: "Was this person actually fired? Are they unemployable? Do they have some issue?"
The goal of your resume isn't to hide the layoff. It's to control the story. Let me show you exactly how.
Should You Mention the Layoff on Your Resume?#
Short answer: you don't need to write "laid off" on your resume. Your resume shows dates and achievements, not reasons for leaving.
But you should be prepared to explain it in:
- Your cover letter (briefly)
- Your LinkedIn (proactively)
- Job interviews (confidently)
On the resume itself: Just list your employment dates normally. If you worked at Byju's from Jan 2023 to Nov 2025, write that. The resume doesn't need to say why you left.
The gap only becomes a question if there's a significant period between your last job and now. If it's been 1-2 months, nobody notices. If it's been 6+ months, you need a strategy.
How to Handle Different Gap Lengths#
Gap of 1-3 Months
Strategy: Do nothing special. This is normal between jobs. Nobody questions it.
Gap of 3-6 Months
Strategy: Fill it with something real. A freelance project, an online certification, volunteering, or skill building. Then list it on your resume.
Example: Freelance Web Developer | Jan 2026 - Present
- Built 2 client websites using React and Next.js
- Completed AWS Cloud Practitioner certification
Gap of 6-12 Months
Strategy: You need a clear narrative. This gap is visible and will be asked about. Use a combination of upskilling, freelancing, and personal projects to show you were active.
Gap of 12+ Months
Strategy: Same as above, but you'll need stronger proof of recent activity. Recent certifications, a portfolio of work, or freelance clients all help. The key message: "I used this time productively."

The Resume Format After a Layoff#
Your Summary Needs to Be Forward-Looking
Bad summary:
Experienced software developer who was laid off from Byju's in November 2025, looking for new opportunities.
Never mention the layoff in your summary. Ever.
Good summary:
Software Developer with 3 years of experience building EdTech products at scale. Built microservices handling 100K+ daily active users using Node.js and MongoDB. Currently upskilling in cloud architecture (AWS certified) while working on freelance projects.
See the difference? The second version focuses on what you bring to the table and what you're doing now. No victim narrative.
Lead with Achievements, Not Timelines
Reorganize your experience section to emphasize results, not dates. Make your bullet points about impact:
Weak:
- Worked as a backend developer at Byju's for 3 years
- Used Node.js and MongoDB
- Left due to layoffs in November 2025
Strong:
- Built the notification service for Byju's learning platform, sending 2M+ push notifications daily with 99.9% uptime
- Reduced API response time by 40% through database query optimization, improving user experience for 500K+ students
- Led migration from monolithic architecture to microservices, cutting deployment time from 2 hours to 15 minutes
The strong version makes recruiters think "I need this person" instead of "oh, they got laid off."
Fill the Gap Section
If you have a gap, create a section that covers it honestly:
Option 1: Freelance/Consulting Freelance Software Developer | Dec 2025 - Present
- Built a restaurant ordering system for a Pune-based chain using React Native
- Developed an inventory management tool for a small business using Python and Django
- Currently contributing to 2 open-source projects on GitHub
Option 2: Upskilling Professional Development | Dec 2025 - Present
- Completed AWS Solutions Architect Associate certification
- Built 3 full-stack projects (portfolio, e-commerce app, real-time chat)
- Completed Meta's Database Engineering Professional Certificate on Coursera
Option 3: Combination Career Development and Freelancing | Dec 2025 - Present
- Took on 2 freelance projects while upskilling in cloud technologies
- Built a SaaS MVP for a friend's startup using Next.js and Supabase
- Completed Google Cloud Professional certification
Any of these work. The point is showing you weren't sitting idle.
What to Actually Do During the Gap#
If you're currently in the gap between your layoff and your next job, here's a priority list of things to do, both for your career and your resume:
Week 1-2: Damage Control
- Update your LinkedIn. Change your headline to something like "Software Developer | Open to Opportunities | Ex-Byju's". Don't leave the old company as your current employer.
- Set up job alerts on LinkedIn, Naukri, and Instahyre.
- Tell your network. Post on LinkedIn about being open to opportunities. DM former colleagues and friends. Most jobs in India come through referrals.
- File for any severance or dues your company owes you.
Week 3-4: Start Building
- Pick one certification relevant to your field and start it. Don't do 5 at once.
- Start a side project that you can show on your resume. Even a small one counts.
- Update your resume using the format we discussed. Get it ATS-ready.
- Start applying. Don't wait until your certification is complete. Apply now.
Month 2-3: Gain Momentum
- Complete that certification.
- Try to get a freelance project. Even one small client gives you something to put on your resume.
- Contribute to open source if you're a developer. Even bug fixes and documentation count.
- Keep applying consistently. Set a target of 5-10 tailored applications per week.
Month 3+: Expand Your Search
- Consider contract or temporary roles. They fill the gap and often convert to full-time.
- Attend meetups and conferences (online or offline) in your field.
- Get your portfolio together. A portfolio site with 3-4 projects is worth more than 10 certifications.
How to Talk About the Layoff in Interviews#
The resume gets you in the door. The interview is where you address the elephant in the room. Here's how:
The Formula
Acknowledge briefly + Explain what you did during the gap + Redirect to the current opportunity
Example Scripts
When asked "Why did you leave your last company?":
"Byju's went through a restructuring and my team was part of the reduction. It was unexpected, but I used the time well. I completed my AWS certification, built two freelance projects, and have been actively looking for a role where I can apply my backend experience at scale. That's exactly why this role caught my attention."
When asked "What have you been doing since then?":
"Mostly two things: upskilling and freelancing. I completed the Google Cloud certification and built an inventory management tool for a local business. I also used this time to figure out what I really want next, which is why I'm specifically targeting product companies like yours."
When asked "Were you fired?":
"No, it was a company-wide layoff. About 500 people were affected in my round. My performance reviews were consistently good. I'm happy to share references from my manager who can confirm that."
What NOT to Say
- Don't badmouth your previous company ("They were terribly managed")
- Don't sound bitter ("They just threw us out like garbage")
- Don't be vague ("Things didn't work out")
- Don't over-explain (30 seconds is enough, then move on)
- Don't lie (saying you left voluntarily when LinkedIn clearly shows the layoff)
LinkedIn Strategy After a Layoff#
Your LinkedIn profile is basically your online resume. Here's how to handle it:
Headline
Change it immediately. Options:
- "Backend Developer | Node.js, AWS | Open to Opportunities"
- "Marketing Manager | 4 Years in EdTech | Exploring New Roles"
- "Ex-Flipkart | Product Analyst | Available Immediately"
About Section
Write a brief, forward-looking paragraph:
"After 3 rewarding years building EdTech products at Byju's, I'm looking for my next challenge. I specialize in building scalable backend systems with Node.js and have recently added AWS (certified) to my skill set. Open to Software Engineer, Backend Developer, or Full Stack roles. Feel free to reach out."
The Layoff Post
This is optional, but it works. A simple, honest LinkedIn post about being laid off often gets massive engagement and leads to referrals. Keep it professional, not emotional.
Special Situations#
You Were Laid Off from Your First Job
This is tough because you don't have a long work history to fall back on. Focus heavily on:
- Your projects and internships from college
- Any work you did during and after the layoff
- Certifications and upskilling
Your resume should look similar to a fresher resume, but with the added advantage of professional experience (even if it was short).
You Were Laid Off Twice
Multiple layoffs are more common than you think, especially if you worked at startups. The key is showing stability through your skills and achievements, not just your employers.
If your last two companies both had layoffs, address it head-on in interviews: "I've had bad luck with company stability, but my skills and performance have been consistent. Here are my references."
You Got a Bad Severance (or None)
This doesn't affect your resume, but it affects your psychology. If money is tight, consider:
- Contract/gig roles on platforms like Toptal, Turing, or Flexiple for tech roles
- Freelancing on Upwork or directly reaching out to startups
- Teaching/tutoring on platforms like Unacademy, Vedantu, or Preply (good for the gap AND the income)
You're Over 35
Age bias is real in Indian tech, and a layoff makes it worse. Counter it by:
- Emphasizing leadership and mentoring experience
- Highlighting strategic contributions, not just coding
- Targeting companies that value experience (consulting firms, enterprise companies, not just startups)
- Considering slightly senior roles where experience is valued
Resume Checklist After a Layoff#
Before you start applying, run through this:
- Summary is forward-looking, no mention of layoff
- Last job has strong achievement-based bullet points
- Gap is filled with freelance/upskilling/projects
- Skills section is updated with any new certifications
- LinkedIn matches your resume (consistent dates and titles)
- You have 2-3 references from your last company ready
- Resume is in ATS-friendly format (check our ATS format guide)
- File is named professionally: "FirstName_LastName_Role.pdf"
You're Going to Be Fine#
A layoff feels like the end of the world when it happens. But look at the data: most laid-off professionals in India find new jobs within 3-6 months. Many end up in better roles with higher pay, because the layoff forced them to actually think about what they want.
Your resume just needs to tell the right story. Not "I got laid off and I'm desperate." But "I'm an experienced professional with real skills, and I've been productive during my transition."
