Resume Education Section: Format for Indian Freshers

Your education section seems simple enough. Just write your degree, college, and year, right?

Not quite. Freshers make surprising mistakes here. Some write their 10th board details before their B.Tech. Others include their school address but forget their CGPA. A few even list every semester's marks like it's a transcript.

For freshers with little or no work experience, the education section carries extra weight. It's often the second thing a recruiter reads after your summary. Getting the format, order, and details right can genuinely affect whether your resume gets shortlisted.

Let's go through exactly how to write this section, with real examples for every common degree.

The Standard Education Format (Use This)#

Here's the template that works for every degree and every ATS:

EDUCATION

B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering
XYZ Institute of Technology, Hyderabad
2022 - 2026 | CGPA: 8.2/10

Class XII (CBSE)
Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pune
2022 | 92%

Class X (CBSE)
Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pune
2020 | 95%

Each entry has 3 lines:

  1. Degree and specialization
  2. Institution name and city
  3. Year(s) and CGPA/Percentage

That's it. No street addresses, no registration numbers, no "University of XYZ affiliated to ABC." Keep it clean.

What to Include (And What to Skip)#

Always Include

  • Degree name and branch/specialization (B.Tech CSE, MBA Finance, BCA)
  • College/University name and city
  • Year of completion (or expected year if still studying)
  • CGPA or percentage (with one condition, covered below)

Include If Relevant

  • Relevant coursework (only 3-5 courses that match the job)
  • Academic achievements (Dean's list, university rank, gold medal)
  • Thesis/dissertation title (for M.Tech, M.Sc, PhD)
  • Minor or dual degree (if applicable)

Skip These

  • Full address of the institution (city is enough)
  • Registration number or roll number
  • Semester-wise marks
  • "Affiliated to XYZ University" (unless the parent university is more well-known)
  • 10th and 12th details (if you have 3+ years of work experience)

The CGPA Question: When to Include It#

This causes so much stress. Here's the simple rule:

Include your CGPA if:

  • It's 7.0 or above (on a 10-point scale)
  • It's 70% or above (percentage)
  • The job listing specifically asks for it
  • You're applying to companies with CGPA cutoffs (TCS: 60%, Infosys: 60%, Wipro: 60%)

Skip your CGPA if:

  • It's below 7.0/70% and the job doesn't require it
  • You have strong projects, internships, or certifications that speak louder

Important: Not including your CGPA is different from lying about it. If a company asks for your CGPA during the application process, always give the real number. On your resume, you simply don't have to volunteer a low number if it's not required.

How to Format CGPA

  • CGPA: Write as "CGPA: 8.2/10" (always include the scale)
  • Percentage: Write as "82%" or "82/100"
  • Don't convert CGPA to percentage or vice versa unless the company specifically asks. Different universities use different conversion formulas, and you might get it wrong.

Education Order: Most Recent First#

Always list your most recent or highest education first. This is called reverse chronological order.

Correct order:

  1. B.Tech / M.Tech / MBA (most recent)
  2. Class XII (12th)
  3. Class X (10th)

Wrong order:

  1. Class X
  2. Class XII
  3. B.Tech

This seems obvious, but I've seen resumes where people list schooling first because "that's where education started." Recruiters want to see your highest qualification first.

When to Drop 10th and 12th

  • Freshers: Keep both 10th and 12th. They show consistency and are often required for campus placements.
  • 1-3 years experience: Keep 12th, you can drop 10th.
  • 3+ years experience: Drop both. Your degree and work experience are enough.
  • Impressive school scores: If you scored 95%+ in 10th or 12th, keep them. High school scores from CBSE/ICSE boards still impress Indian recruiters.

Relevant Coursework: When and How to Add It#

Adding relevant coursework is a smart move for freshers who don't have much work experience. It tells the recruiter: "I've studied the subjects your job requires."

When to Include Coursework

  • You're a fresher with limited projects
  • The job requires specific technical knowledge
  • Your degree name doesn't clearly indicate your skills (e.g., "B.Sc General" doesn't tell much)

How to Format It

Add it as a single line under your degree:

B.Tech in Information Technology
VIT Vellore | 2022-2026 | CGPA: 8.4/10
Relevant Coursework: Data Structures, Database Management, Software Engineering, Computer Networks

Rules:

  • List only 4-6 courses max
  • Pick courses that match the job description
  • Use full course names, not abbreviations (write "Database Management" not "DBMS" unless the JD uses "DBMS")
  • Don't list every course you took. Nobody cares about "Engineering Graphics" if you're applying for a software role.

Academic Achievements Worth Mentioning#

Some academic accomplishments deserve a callout. You can either add them under the education entry or create a separate "Achievements" section.

Worth including:

  • University rank (top 5% of class, gold medal, rank holder)
  • Dean's List or Academic Excellence Award
  • Scholarship recipient (merit-based)
  • Research publication (include journal/conference name)
  • National-level exam ranks (GATE, CAT percentile, JEE rank)
  • Hackathon wins (especially from recognized platforms)

Not worth including:

  • "Participated in college cultural fest"
  • Class representative or class monitor
  • Attendance award
  • "Active member of IEEE/CSI chapter" (unless you held a position or did something notable)

How to Add Achievements

Option 1: Under education

B.Tech in Computer Science
NIT Surathkal | 2022-2026 | CGPA: 9.2/10
- University Gold Medalist (Rank 1 in department)
- GATE 2026: AIR 342

Option 2: Separate section

ACHIEVEMENTS
- University Gold Medal in Computer Science, NIT Surathkal (2026)
- GATE 2026: AIR 342 (99.5 percentile)
- Smart India Hackathon 2025: Winner (Software Edition)

Check our full guide on writing the achievements section for more examples.

How ATS Reads Your Education Section#

ATS software parses your education section to extract:

  1. Degree level (Bachelor's, Master's, Diploma, PhD)
  2. Field of study (Computer Science, Mechanical, Marketing)
  3. Institution name
  4. Graduation year
  5. GPA/Percentage

ATS-Friendly Tips

  • Use standard section headings: "Education" or "Academic Qualifications." Not "Where I Learned" or "My Academic Journey."
  • Spell out degree names: Write "Bachelor of Technology" at least once, with "B.Tech" as a parenthetical. Some ATS systems search for "Bachelor" while others search for "B.Tech."
  • Avoid tables: Some ATS parsers can't read tables properly. Use plain text with clear line breaks.
  • Include the full degree name: "B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering" is better than just "B.Tech" because it adds more searchable keywords.
  • Year format: Use "2022 - 2026" or "2022-2026." Both work. Avoid "July 2022 to June 2026" unless space permits.

Common ATS Parsing Errors

  • Two-column layouts: ATS might read your education and skills in the wrong order. Single-column is safer.
  • Graphics or icons: A graduation cap icon next to "Education" looks nice but confuses ATS.
  • Text in headers/footers: Some resumes put education in the header. ATS often skips headers and footers.

Education for Specific Situations#

Still Studying (Expected Graduation)

B.Tech in Computer Science (Expected June 2026)
SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai
Current CGPA: 8.1/10

Use "Expected" with the month and year. Include your current CGPA.

Backlog / Year Gap

Don't mention backlogs on your resume. If your degree took 5 years instead of 4, just write the start and end years. If asked in an interview, explain honestly.

B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
PES University, Bangalore
2021 - 2026 | CGPA: 7.2/10

The recruiter might notice the 5-year gap, but most won't question a single extra year. Don't draw attention to it.

Distance / Online Degree

List it the same way, but include the mode if it's from a respected institution.

MBA in Finance (Distance Learning)
IGNOU, New Delhi
2024 - 2026 | 72%

Multiple Degrees

List them in reverse chronological order. If you have a dual degree, combine them:

B.Tech + M.Tech (Dual Degree) in Computer Science
IIT Kharagpur
2021 - 2026 | CGPA: 8.9/10

Placement Season Tip: CGPA Cutoffs at Major Companies#

If you're preparing for campus placements, here are common CGPA cutoffs at Indian IT companies (as of 2025-2026):

CompanyTypical CGPA CutoffPercentage Equivalent
TCS6.0/1060%
Infosys6.0/1060%
Wipro6.0/1060%
HCL6.0/1060%
Cognizant6.5/1065%
Accenture6.5/1065%
Capgemini6.0/1060%
Amazon7.0/10 (varies)70%
GoogleNo cutoff (but academics reviewed)N/A
MicrosoftNo cutoff (but academics reviewed)N/A

If your CGPA clears these cutoffs, definitely include it. If it doesn't, focus on building a strong projects and skills section instead.
