You Did B.Com. Everyone Says "Do CA." But You Want a Job NOW.#
You finished your B.Com. Accounting, finance, taxation, business law, economics. Three years of theory and exams.
Now your parents are asking when you'll "settle down" with a job, your friends are posting about their TCS and Infosys joining dates, and you're wondering if a commerce degree is even worth anything in 2026.
It is. But only if your resume shows it right.
The problem with most B.Com fresher resumes? They look exactly like a BA resume. Generic. No numbers. No tools mentioned. No proof that you can actually do the accounting, finance, or analysis work that companies are hiring for.
This guide will fix that. Section by section, you'll learn how to build a B.Com fresher resume that actually gets calls from banks, CA firms, corporates, and fintech companies.
What Recruiters Look For in B.Com Fresher Resumes#
The hiring manager at a Big 4 firm (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) or a banking recruiter at ICICI, HDFC, or Kotak looks for very specific things:
- Accounting software skills. Tally ERP 9 / Tally Prime is practically mandatory. If you know SAP, even better.
- Excel proficiency. Not basic Excel. Advanced Excel: VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, SUMIF, INDEX-MATCH, conditional formatting, macros.
- Taxation knowledge. GST filing, income tax basics, TDS. Practical knowledge, not just theory.
- Financial analysis. Can you read a balance sheet? Do you know what ratios mean? Have you done any real analysis?
- Internship or articleship. Any exposure to a CA firm, bank, or finance department. Even 1-2 months.
For fintech companies (Razorpay, PhonePe, Paytm, Zerodha), they also want:
- SQL or basic data analysis skills
- Understanding of financial products
- Excel with some Python or Power BI is a bonus
Your resume needs to surface these skills immediately. Not buried on page 2. Not hidden in vague bullet points.
Section-by-Section Resume Format for B.Com Freshers#
1. Contact Information
Pooja Agarwal
+91-98765-43210 | [email protected]
LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/poojaagarwal
Kolkata, West Bengal
Do:
- Professional email (firstname.lastname)
- Customized LinkedIn URL
- City and state only
Don't:
- Photo, date of birth, marital status, father's name
- College email that expires
- Full home address
Note: B.Com resumes typically don't need a GitHub link unless you've learned programming. But if you know SQL or Python, include a relevant link.
2. Professional Summary
Two to three lines. Be specific about what you know and what you want.
Good examples:
B.Com graduate from Calcutta University with specialization in Accounting and Finance. Proficient in Tally Prime, Advanced Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, Macros), and GST filing. Completed a 3-month internship at a CA firm handling accounts receivable, bank reconciliation, and tax returns. Seeking an Accounts Executive role.
B.Com (Honours) fresher from Delhi University with strong foundation in financial accounting, cost accounting, and taxation. Skilled in Tally ERP 9, Excel, and SAP FICO basics. Seeking an entry-level finance role in banking or corporate accounting.
Commerce graduate with 6 months of experience at an e-commerce startup handling bookkeeping, vendor payments, and monthly MIS reports. Proficient in Tally, Advanced Excel, and basic SQL for data analysis.
Bad example:
A hardworking and dedicated individual seeking a challenging opportunity in the field of commerce and finance where I can use my skills and grow professionally.
This could be written by any graduate from any stream. It tells the recruiter nothing.
3. Education
Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com Honours) 2023-2026
Calcutta University CGPA: 7.9/10
Specialization: Accounting and Finance
Higher Secondary (12th, Commerce) 2023
CBSE Board 85%
Secondary (10th) 2021
CBSE Board 82%
Tips:
- Mention your specialization (Accounting, Finance, Banking, Taxation)
- Include CGPA if above 6.5/60%
- If you're pursuing CA/CS/CMA alongside, mention it: "CA Inter (Group 1 cleared, May 2025)"
- Academic achievements like rank, merit, or scholarship go here
4. Technical and Professional Skills
This section is different from a tech resume. Focus on tools and practical skills.
Accounting Software: Tally Prime, Tally ERP 9, QuickBooks
Spreadsheet Tools: Advanced Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables,
INDEX-MATCH, Macros, Data Validation)
Taxation: GST Filing (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B), TDS Returns, Income Tax
ERP/Analytics: SAP FICO (basic), Power BI (basic), SQL (basic)
Financial Skills: Balance Sheet Analysis, Bank Reconciliation,
Accounts Payable/Receivable, Budgeting
Office Tools: MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Google Sheets
Key rules:
- Tally is almost always expected. If you don't know it, learn it this week. Seriously.
- "Advanced Excel" alone is vague. List the specific functions (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables)
- If you know even basic SQL, mention it. Finance + SQL candidates are rare and valuable
- Don't list "MS Word" as your first skill. Lead with accounting tools
5. Internship / Work Experience
For B.Com freshers, this section makes the biggest difference. Even a short internship transforms your resume.
CA Firm Internship:
Accounting Intern | Sharma & Associates (CA Firm), Kolkata
January 2025 - March 2025
- Handled accounts receivable and payable for 12 client firms
with combined annual turnover of Rs 15 crore
- Filed GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B) for 8 clients monthly
with zero error rate
- Performed bank reconciliation for 5 current accounts,
identifying and resolving 23 discrepancies
- Prepared trial balances and P&L statements for quarterly
review using Tally Prime
Bank / NBFC Internship:
Operations Intern | ICICI Bank, Kolkata (Camac Street Branch)
May 2025 - July 2025
- Assisted in processing 50+ daily customer transactions
including account opening, KYC verification, and fund transfers
- Maintained MIS reports tracking branch performance metrics
using Advanced Excel
- Supported the relationship manager in preparing 15 loan
proposals for retail customers
Startup / Small Business:
Finance Intern | ShopEasy (E-Commerce Startup), Remote
June 2025 - August 2025
- Managed daily bookkeeping for 200+ vendor transactions
using Tally Prime and Google Sheets
- Reconciled payment gateway settlements (Razorpay) with
bank statements, processing Rs 8 lakh monthly
- Created automated Excel dashboards for tracking monthly
expenses across 6 cost centers
If you have no internship at all, read the next section on how to compensate.
6. Academic Projects / Practical Work
If you don't have internship experience, this section becomes critical.
Example 1:
Financial Analysis of HDFC Bank vs ICICI Bank | Excel, Annual Reports
- Analyzed 3 years of financial statements for both banks using ratio analysis
- Compared 12 financial ratios including ROE, NPA percentage, CASA ratio, and net profit margin
- Presented findings to faculty in a 20-slide presentation with data-driven recommendations
Example 2:
GST Impact Study on Small Businesses in Kolkata | Survey, Excel Analysis
- Surveyed 30 small business owners to understand GST compliance challenges
- Created Excel dashboards showing tax burden comparison (pre-GST vs post-GST)
- Identified that 60% of respondents found GSTR-3B filing confusing, suggesting need for simpler tools
Example 3:
Personal Budget Tracker | Excel VBA, Macros
- Built an automated Excel workbook for tracking personal income and expenses
- Created macros for auto-categorization of transactions across 15 categories
- Added pivot table dashboards showing monthly spending trends and savings rate
7. Certifications
Certifications add serious weight to a B.Com fresher resume. Here are the best ones:
High-value certifications:
- Tally Prime Certification (TallyAcademy)
- Advanced Excel certification (any reputed platform)
- NISM Series VIII (Equity Derivatives) for stock market roles
- CA Inter (one or both groups cleared)
- CS Foundation or Executive cleared
- CMA Foundation cleared

- NSE Academy Certified Market Professional (NCMP)
Also useful:

- Power BI or Tableau basics
Skip:
- Generic "Computer Course" certificates
- Participation certificates from seminars
- Typing speed certificates (unless applying for data entry)
8. Achievements
- Secured university rank / department topper in B.Com
- Won inter-college commerce quiz or business plan competition
- Published a paper on GST reform or financial inclusion
- Selected for a national-level commerce fest
- Active member of Commerce Society or Finance Club
Common Mistakes B.Com Freshers Make#
1. No Quantifiable Numbers
"Handled accounting work" is useless. "Handled accounts for 12 clients with combined turnover of Rs 15 crore" is specific and impressive.
Always add numbers: how many clients, how much money, how many transactions, what percentage improvement.
2. Not Mentioning Tally
In India, Tally is to accounting what Excel is to everything else. If your resume doesn't mention Tally, the recruiter assumes you can't use it. Even if the JD doesn't specifically ask for Tally, include it.
3. Listing Only "MS Office"
Every graduate in the country lists "MS Office." It means nothing. Break it down: "Advanced Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, INDEX-MATCH, Macros)." That's specific and impressive.
4. Ignoring Industry Keywords
Job descriptions for commerce roles use specific terms: accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank reconciliation, general ledger, trial balance, P&L statement, GST returns, TDS, MIS reports. If these terms don't appear in your resume, ATS will reject you. Read our ATS resume format guide for details.
5. Making a 3-Page Resume
You're a fresher. One page. If you have strong internship experience and certifications, two pages maximum. Three pages for a fresh graduate is always padding.
ATS Tips for B.Com Fresher Resumes#
Companies like Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC, ICICI, HDFC, and even mid-sized CA firms use ATS to screen resumes. Here's how to pass.
-
Use standard section headings. "Education", "Skills", "Experience", "Certifications". Not "My Financial Journey" or "Core Competencies Acquired".
-
Simple format only. Single column. No tables, no text boxes, no graphics, no icons. ATS reads top to bottom. Check our guide on common resume mistakes.
-
Match JD keywords exactly. If the JD says "Tally Prime", write "Tally Prime", not "Tally." If it says "GST Filing", include "GST Filing" as a keyword.
-
PDF format. Text-based PDF, not scanned. You should be able to select text when you open the file.
-
One-page preferred. ATS parses shorter documents more reliably. And recruiters screening 500 B.Com resumes prefer brevity.
-

Your Commerce Degree Has Value. Show It.#
B.Com is one of the most popular degrees in India, which means competition is fierce. But that also means companies need thousands of commerce graduates every year for accounting, finance, audit, tax, and banking roles.
The students who get hired first aren't the ones with the highest CGPA. They're the ones with a resume that clearly shows: "I know Tally, I know Excel, I've done real accounting work, and I can add value from day one."
