Resume Format for Freshers 2026: Which Format Gets You Hired (With Examples)

You're making a resume for the first time.

You Google "resume format" and find 50 different templates. Some have fancy graphics. Some have two columns. Some look like a newspaper.

Which one do recruiters actually want?

Here's the truth: 90% of freshers choose the WRONG format and get auto-rejected.

I'll show you the 3 formats that actually work, which one to use based on your situation, and give you free templates.

The 3 Resume Formats (And When to Use Each)#

1. Reverse Chronological (Best for Most Freshers)

What it is: Lists your experience and education from most recent to oldest.

Structure:

  • Contact info
  • Education (degree, college, graduation year, CGPA)
  • Projects (most recent first)
  • Internships (if you have them)
  • Skills
  • Certifications/Achievements

When to use:

  • You have 1-2 internships
  • You have 3-4 solid college projects
  • You're applying to product companies (Amazon, Microsoft, Flipkart)
  • You're in engineering/tech

Why it works: Recruiters scan top to bottom. They see your latest (and usually best) work first.

ATS loves this format. Clear sections, standard flow, easy to parse.

Who shouldn't use this: If you have ZERO internships and only 1 weak project, this format will highlight your lack of experience.

2. Functional (Skills-Based)

What it is: Focuses on your skills and abilities, not your timeline.

Structure:

  • Contact info
  • Skills (grouped by category)
  • Projects (brief descriptions)
  • Education
  • Certifications

When to use:

  • You have NO internships
  • You're switching domains (mechanical to software, commerce to marketing)
  • You learned everything through online courses, not college
  • You have a weak CGPA (below 6.5) and don't want it to be the first thing recruiters see

Why it works: Puts your actual abilities front and center. De-emphasizes gaps in formal experience.

Who shouldn't use this: If you have internships, don't hide them. Functional format makes recruiters suspicious ("What are they hiding?")

3. Hybrid (Combination)

What it is: Mix of chronological and functional. Skills at the top, then experience in reverse order.

Structure:

  • Contact info
  • Skills summary (3-4 top skills with brief proof)
  • Projects (reverse chronological)
  • Internships (if any)
  • Education
  • Certifications

When to use:

  • You have strong skills but limited formal experience
  • You're a self-taught developer with good projects
  • You want to highlight both skills AND projects equally

Why it works: Catches recruiter's attention with skills, then backs it up with proof (projects).

Who shouldn't use this: If you're applying to mass recruiters (TCS, Infosys, Wipro), stick to chronological. They prefer standard formats.

Common Resume Format Mistakes by Indian Freshers#

Mistake 1: Using Two-Column Layouts

Those fancy templates with skills on the left, experience on the right?

ATS can't read them properly. It gets confused about the order of information.

Your skills might get read before your name. Or worse, it might miss entire sections.

Fix: Single column layout. Top to bottom. Left-aligned text.

Mistake 2: Starting with "Career Objective"

"Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organization where I can utilize my skills..."

Every fresher writes this. Recruiters skip it.

It wastes space and says nothing useful.

Fix: Skip the objective. Start with Education or Skills. Or use a 2-line Profile Summary (only if you have something specific to say).

Mistake 3: Listing Personal Details

Father's name, date of birth, marital status, permanent address, passport number, blood group...

Indian students put all this because our seniors told us to.

It's outdated. Companies don't need this at application stage.

Fix: Just name, phone, email, LinkedIn, GitHub. That's it.

Mistake 4: Putting Education at the Bottom

Some templates put education last (after experience and skills).

That's for experienced professionals who have 5+ years of work.

You're a fresher. Your degree is your main credential.

Fix: Education comes right after your contact info (or after a skills summary if you're using hybrid format).

Mistake 5: Using Passive Language

"Was responsible for developing..." "Assisted in implementing..." "Worked on designing..."

This makes you sound like you didn't actually do anything.

Fix: Use action verbs. Start every bullet with: Developed, Built, Implemented, Designed, Created, Optimized, Led, Managed, Analyzed.

Mistake 6: No Numbers or Results

"Developed a website" "Fixed bugs in the code" "Managed social media"

These bullets say nothing about impact.

Fix: Add numbers.

  • "Developed a website with 500+ daily visitors"
  • "Fixed 15 bugs, reducing crash rate by 30%"
  • "Managed Instagram page, grew from 200 to 2000 followers in 3 months"

Mistake 7: Listing Every College Assignment

You made 10 mini projects in your labs. You think more projects = better resume.

Wrong. Recruiters don't care about 10 mediocre projects. They want to see 2-3 GOOD projects.

Fix: Pick your best 3-4 projects. Write 3-4 bullets for each. Show complexity and impact.

How to Choose the Right Resume Format for You#

Answer these questions:

1. Do you have any internships?

  • Yes (1 or more) → Reverse Chronological
  • No → Functional or Hybrid

2. Do you have 3+ solid projects?

  • Yes → Reverse Chronological or Hybrid
  • No → Functional (focus on skills, then build more projects)

3. Is your CGPA above 7.0?

  • Yes → Put education near the top
  • No (6.0-7.0) → Put education after projects
  • Below 6.0 → Consider functional format, put education last

4. Are you applying to mass recruiters or product companies?

  • Mass recruiters (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture) → Reverse Chronological (they want standard format)
  • Product companies (Amazon, Microsoft, startups) → Any format works, but Hybrid is impressive if done well

5. Are you switching domains?

  • No (applying for jobs related to your degree) → Reverse Chronological
  • Yes (mechanical grad applying for software jobs) → Functional or Hybrid

Resume Format Checklist (Before You Apply)#

✅ Single column layout (no sidebars or columns)

✅ Standard section names (Education, Projects, Skills - not creative names)

✅ Contact info at top (name, phone, email, LinkedIn, GitHub)

✅ Education near top (right after contact info or skills summary)

✅ Projects in reverse chronological order (newest first)

✅ Each project has tech stack listed (for ATS keywords)

✅ Bullet points start with action verbs (Developed, Built, Implemented)

✅ Numbers in bullets (show impact and scale)

✅ No personal details (no father's name, DOB, marital status)

✅ No career objective (waste of space)

✅ 1 page only (freshers should never have 2-page resume)

✅ Standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman)

✅ Saved as .docx (not .pdf unless job posting specifically asks for PDF)

✅ Filename format: FirstName_LastName_Resume.docx (not CV_Final_Updated_2026.docx)

Free Resume Templates for Freshers#

Where to Get Templates

1. JobRise Resume Builder (Recommended)

  • Go to JobRise Resume Builder
  • Sign up free (Google login)
  • Choose from 3 ATS-friendly templates
  • Fill in your details
  • Download as .docx or PDF

Templates:

  • Classic (reverse chronological) - best for most freshers
  • Modern (hybrid) - good for self-taught developers
  • Minimal (functional) - clean and simple

2. Google Docs Templates

  • Search "resume template" in Google Docs
  • Many free, simple templates available
  • Easy to customize

3. Canva

  • Free account
  • Search "ATS resume"
  • But be careful: most Canva templates are NOT ATS-friendly
  • Only use single-column templates
  • Export as .docx, not PDF (Canva PDFs often break ATS)

Do NOT Use

  • Fancy templates from Behance or Pinterest (graphics-heavy, ATS can't read)
  • Templates with images, charts, or icons (ATS fails)
  • Templates with tables (ATS gets confused)
  • Any template that's "creative" or "modern" unless you're a designer applying for design roles

Should You Use ChatGPT to Format Your Resume?#

ChatGPT can help you:

  • Rewrite bullet points to sound more professional
  • Add action verbs
  • Suggest better phrasing

But it can't:

  • Design the format/layout (it just gives you text)
  • Tell you which format to use for your situation
  • Ensure ATS compatibility
  • Match keywords to specific job descriptions

Better: Use a tool built for resumes, like JobRise Resume Builder.

Upload your current resume, it'll tell you which format you're using and whether it's ATS-friendly.

What to Do After You Pick Your Format#

  1. Build your resume using the format - Use JobRise Resume Builder (free for freshers)

  2. Check ATS compatibility - Upload to JobRise ATS Checker to make sure format is readable

  3. Customize for each job - Add keywords from job description to your skills and project bullets

  4. Write a cover letter - Most Indian freshers skip this. Big mistake. Use JobRise Cover Letter Generator (tailors to each job in 30 seconds)

  5. Optimize your LinkedIn - Recruiters check LinkedIn after reading resume. Use JobRise LinkedIn Optimizer

Real Results: Resume Format Changes#

Before: Fancy two-column format

  • Applied to 100 jobs
  • Got 2 interview calls
  • ATS score: 35/100

After: Single-column reverse chronological

  • Applied to 50 jobs
  • Got 12 interview calls
  • ATS score: 88/100

Same person. Same experience. Just changed the format.

FAQs#

Should freshers use PDF or DOCX format?

For most Indian companies: .docx is safer.

Many ATSFails when parsing PDFs (especially if your PDF has images or fancy formatting).

Only use PDF if:

  • Job posting specifically says "PDF only"
  • You're applying through LinkedIn (they handle PDFs well)
  • It's a design/creative role

For TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture: always send .docx

How many pages should a fresher resume be?

1 page. Always.

You don't have 10 years of experience. You have 2-4 projects and maybe 1 internship.

That fits on 1 page.

If your resume is 2 pages, you're either:

  • Using a template with too much spacing
  • Writing too much fluff
  • Listing irrelevant information

Cut it down to 1 page.

Should I include CGPA if it's below 7?

If it's above 6.5: Yes, include it. It's not great, but it's acceptable.

If it's 6.0-6.5: You can include it, but don't put education at the top. Put projects first to catch recruiter's attention.

If it's below 6.0: Consider leaving it out, or write "CGPA: 6.2 (Cleared all subjects in first attempt)" to show no backlogs.

Or use functional format where education goes at the bottom.

Can I use colors in my resume?

Light colors for section headers: okay.

Black text on white background: safest.

Heavy colors, colored backgrounds, or multiple colors: bad for ATS.

Rule: If you're not applying for a design role, stick to black and white with maybe one accent color (dark blue or dark gray) for headers.

What if I have no internships and weak projects?

Then your resume format is not your main problem.

Your problem is you don't have enough to put ON the resume.

Fix that first:

  1. Build 2-3 solid projects in the next 2 weeks
  2. Get them on GitHub with good READMEs
  3. Write detailed bullet points for each

Use JobRise Project Brainstorm to get project ideas that match your target job.

Once you have 3 projects, come back and use functional or hybrid format.

Should I mention hobbies and interests?

Only if you have space left (unlikely on a 1-page resume).

Hobbies don't help you get hired unless they're relevant:

  • "Open source contributor on GitHub" (relevant for developers)
  • "Run a tech blog with 5000+ monthly readers" (shows communication skills)
  • "Competitive programming" (relevant for SDE roles)

Generic hobbies like "reading, traveling, music" are filler. Skip them.

Start Here: Build Your Resume with the Right Format#

Stop using fancy templates that get you rejected.

Pick the format that matches your situation:

  • Have internships → Reverse Chronological
  • No internships → Functional or Hybrid

Use JobRise Resume Builder to build it in 10 minutes.

It's free for freshers. Choose from 3 ATS-friendly templates. Fill in your details. Download and apply.

Then check your ATS score with JobRise ATS Checker to make sure it'll actually get read by recruiters.

Don't apply with the wrong format and waste another 100 applications.
