10 Resume Mistakes Jo Teri Naukri Kha Rahe Hain
You apply to 60 jobs, then 100, then 150.
Result is still the same: no calls, or one random rejection email after two weeks.
At that point most freshers think, "Maybe my degree is weak" or "Maybe referrals are everything."
Truth is simpler. In many cases, your resume gets rejected before a recruiter even reads line 2.
Most companies in India use ATS filters in the first round. If your resume is hard to parse, missing the right keywords, or filled with old-school resume habits, you are out.
This post is your practical fix list.
I am not giving textbook advice here. These are the same mistakes I keep seeing in resumes from B.Tech, BCA, B.Com, MBA, and even experienced candidates in India.
Read this once, fix your resume today, then apply again.
Quick Reality Check Before We Start#
- Recruiters usually spend very little time on the first scan.
- ATS systems check structure, keywords, and readability first.
- A "good looking" resume can still fail badly in ATS.
- A plain resume with the right content gets interviews.
Now let us break down the 10 mistakes.
1. Using a Generic Objective Statement Instead of a Targeted Summary#
Why this is bad
Most freshers write something like:
"Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organization where I can grow and contribute."
Problem is, this line could belong to anyone. Recruiters read it and learn nothing about your role target, your strengths, or your proof.
If you are applying for a Data Analyst role at a Pune startup, and your summary sounds the same as someone applying for Sales Trainee in Gurgaon, that top section is wasted.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
Career Objective:
To work in a challenging environment where I can use my skills and grow professionally.
Right way:
Summary:
Final-year B.Tech IT student targeting entry-level Data Analyst roles.
Built 3 projects using SQL, Excel, and Power BI, including a sales dashboard on 50,000 rows.
Completed a 2-month internship where I automated weekly reports and cut manual effort by 6 hours per week.
How ATS handles this
ATS looks for role alignment and keywords. Generic objective statements contain almost zero useful keywords.
A targeted summary helps ATS match terms like Data Analyst, SQL, Power BI, dashboard, internship, and domain words from the job description.
5-minute fix
- Delete the old objective.
- Write 3 lines only.
- Line 1: target role.
- Line 2: top tools and projects.
- Line 3: one result with numbers.
Done. Top section becomes useful immediately.
2. Putting Photo on Resume#
Why this is bad
This is a common habit in India, especially from college templates and local cyber cafe formats.
For most private-sector roles, photo on resume is unnecessary and risky.
A lot of ATS tools do not read images. In some templates, photo placement also disturbs surrounding text extraction.
Example: A fresher from Nagpur added a passport photo in top-right with a text box below it. ATS pulled contact info in broken order, and phone number got skipped.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
[Passport Photo]
Name
Email
Phone
Address
Right way:
Name
Phone | Email | LinkedIn | GitHub
City, State
How ATS handles this
ATS does not "understand" your face. It only reads text.
If design elements around the image are messy, parser confidence drops. In many cases, this leads to missing contact details or section confusion.
5-minute fix
- Remove photo completely.
- Keep header text-only.
- Use one clean line for contact details.
- Save and re-check ATS score.
Exception: only add photo if the employer explicitly asks for it.
3. Sending the Wrong File Format#
Why this is bad
You made a good resume, but you send:
.pagesfile from Mac- Editable Google Docs link
- Canva share link
- Scanned image PDF
Recruiter cannot open it quickly, permissions fail, or ATS cannot parse it correctly.
Indian hiring teams handle large volume. If opening your resume takes extra effort, they move on.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
Resume_Final_Latest2.pages
Google Drive Link (restricted)
my-resume-design.png
Right way:
Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf
Text-based PDF exported from Word/Docs
How ATS handles this
ATS prefers stable text files. Text-based PDF is usually safe.
Private Drive links can fail in automated systems. Image-based files behave like a picture, ATS cannot read the text properly.
5-minute fix
- Open resume in Docs or Word.
- Export as PDF.
- Reopen PDF and try copy-paste test.
- Rename file professionally.
- Upload this PDF everywhere.
Keep one master editable file, but send PDF.
4. No Keywords from Job Description#
Why this is bad
This is the biggest ATS killer.
Suppose JD says: Java, Spring Boot, REST API, MySQL, Microservices.
Your resume says: Backend basics, API work, Database knowledge.
Human can guess, ATS will not guess.
Indian freshers often apply with one resume to TCS, Infosys, startups, product companies, all with different keyword expectations. That hurts match rate.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
Skills: Coding, Database, Web development, Problem solving
Right way:
Skills: Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, MySQL, Git, Postman
Another example:
Wrong: MS Office
Right: Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP), PowerPoint
How ATS handles this
ATS scores keyword overlap between JD and resume.
Exact or near-exact keyword matches are rewarded. Vague wording lowers score.
If required skills are missing, your profile can be auto-screened out even before HR review.
5-minute fix
- Copy the job description into notes.
- Highlight 10 to 15 repeated skill terms.
- Add only truthful matching skills to your resume.
- Mirror keyword phrasing from JD in summary, skills, and projects.
- Recheck ATS score for that job.
Do this per role type, not once for all jobs.
5. Listing Responsibilities Instead of Achievements#
Why this is bad
Many fresher resumes read like duty lists:
- Responsible for project development
- Worked on frontend
- Managed social media
This tells what you did, not what changed because of your work.
Recruiters in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurugram are looking for impact. Even small impact counts if it is measurable.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
Intern, Digital Marketing
- Handled Instagram page
- Created posts
- Worked with team
Right way:
Intern, Digital Marketing
- Planned and posted 30-day content calendar for Instagram and LinkedIn
- Increased average post reach from 1,200 to 3,400 in 6 weeks
- Reduced content approval cycle by creating reusable templates, from 3 days to 1 day
Tech example:
- Built authentication module in Node.js, reduced login failure complaints by 40%
How ATS handles this
ATS does not directly "understand impact" like a human, but achievement bullets naturally include better keywords, action verbs, tools, and numbers.
That improves relevance and makes recruiter screening faster after ATS pass.
5-minute fix
Use this format for each bullet:
- Action verb
- Task with tool
- Number or result
Example template:
Built [feature] using [tool], improved [metric] by [X%] in [timeframe].
Rewrite top 4 bullets first. Big improvement in very little time.
6. Too Many Pages for a Fresher Resume#
Why this is bad
If you are a fresher or under 2 years of experience, a 3-page resume is usually a red flag.
It signals poor prioritization.
Common reason in India: adding school achievements, long hobby paragraphs, full address, declaration section, and repeated project details.
Recruiters want fast clarity, not biography.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
- Page 1: objective, photo, personal details
- Page 2: long semester-by-semester projects
- Page 3: declaration, references, hobbies, workshop list
Right way:
- One page for freshers
- Focus on summary, skills, projects, internship, education
- Remove low-value old details
How ATS handles this
ATS can parse long resumes, but longer file does not mean better score.
Extra fluff can dilute keyword density and make key sections harder to identify quickly for human reviewers.
5-minute fix
- Set a one-page target.
- Keep only last 2 to 3 strong projects.
- Keep bullet points short.
- Delete declaration and references line.
- Remove class 10 extracurricular details unless highly relevant.
You can keep a long master CV separately, but your job application resume should stay tight.
7. Fancy Templates with Columns, Graphics, Icons#
Why this is bad
Canva templates look beautiful, but many are ATS-unfriendly.
Two columns, icons for phone/email, progress bars for skills, colorful boxes, and text inside shapes can break parsing.
Real example: Candidate from Chennai used a two-column resume with icons only for contact. ATS failed to capture email address because it sat inside a design block.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
Two-column layout
Skill bars: Python ████████ 80%
Icons instead of text labels
Project details inside text boxes
Right way:
Single-column layout
Plain text headings
Simple bullet points
No charts, no icons, no text boxes
How ATS handles this
Most ATS parsers read documents in linear text flow.
Complex layout can scramble section order, merge unrelated lines, or skip content in sidebars.
Even if ATS reads some of it, recruiter export views can still look broken.
5-minute fix
- Move content into a simple single-column template.
- Replace icons with words like
Phone,Email,LinkedIn. - Replace skill bars with plain skill list.
- Keep heading names standard.
- Run ATS check again.
Pretty is optional, readable is mandatory.
8. Spelling and Grammar Errors#
Why this is bad
Typos can kill credibility in seconds.
If your resume says recieved, responsiblities, managment, recruiter assumes poor attention to detail.
For support, analyst, content, operations, and client-facing roles, language errors are even more costly.
Indian recruiters often compare many similar fresher profiles. Small errors become easy reject triggers.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
- Recieved appreciation for responsiblities in managment of event
- Knowlege of Excell and power point
Right way:
- Received appreciation for managing event operations during annual college fest
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
How ATS handles this
ATS keyword matching depends on correct spelling.
If JD has management and your resume says managment, you may lose that keyword match.
So typos hurt both human impression and machine score.
5-minute fix
- Run spell check in Google Docs or Word.
- Read resume out loud once.
- Ask one friend to proofread.
- Fix tense consistency: past tense for completed work.
- Re-export final PDF.
This is one of the fastest high-impact fixes.
9. Including Irrelevant Personal Information#
Why this is bad
Still common in many Indian resumes:
- Father name
- Mother name
- Marital status
- Date of birth
- Religion
- Full postal address
- Aadhaar number
For private jobs, this is not needed on resume.
It wastes space and raises privacy risk.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
Father's Name: Ramesh Kumar
DOB: 08/07/2002
Marital Status: Single
Nationality: Indian
Address: H.No 122, Lane 4, ...
Right way:
Name
Phone | Email | LinkedIn | GitHub
Location: Jaipur, Rajasthan
How ATS handles this
ATS does not reward these personal fields for most corporate jobs.
Too much non-relevant text can reduce focus on skills and role-fit keywords.
5-minute fix
- Delete all personal fields except contact basics.
- Keep city and state only.
- Use that space for skills or project bullets.
- Save updated file.
If a company needs personal details, they will ask in form fields later.
10. No Relevant Skills Section, or Wrong Skills Listed#
Why this is bad
Some resumes have no skill section at all.
Others have random skill lists not matching the role, like applying for Business Analyst while top skills show C, C++, AutoCAD with zero analytics tools.
Another mistake is adding every tool ever touched for one day, then failing in interview.
Wrong way vs right way
Wrong way:
Skills:
Hardworking, Team player, Leadership, MS Office, Internet browsing, Quick learner
Right way for analyst role:
Skills:
SQL, Microsoft Excel, Power BI, Python (Pandas), Statistics, Data Cleaning, Dashboarding
Right way for software role:
Skills:
Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, MySQL, Git, Postman, OOP, Data Structures
How ATS handles this
Skills section is a major keyword source.
If core role skills are missing, ATS match score drops hard.
If skills are irrelevant to JD, the score can stay low even if rest of resume looks fine.
5-minute fix
- Pick one target role for this version of resume.
- Create a 10 to 15 skill list aligned to that role.
- Keep only skills you can explain with project/internship proof.
- Group by category: Languages, Tools, Frameworks, Platforms.
- Reorder skills so most relevant ones appear first.
Role-focused skills section can change your shortlist rate quickly.
Final 15-Minute Resume Cleanup Plan#
If you are short on time, do this in order:
- Remove photo and personal details.
- Replace objective with targeted summary.
- Convert to single-column ATS-friendly format.
- Add JD keywords in skills and project bullets.
- Rewrite 4 bullets as achievements with numbers.
- Fix typos, export clean PDF.
- Keep it one page if you are a fresher.
Then run one ATS check before you apply.
Last Thing, Stop Guessing and Measure It#
Most people edit resume blindly and hope for better results.
Do this instead:
- Upload your resume.
- Paste the job description.
- See your ATS score and missing keywords.
- Fix fast, recheck, then apply.
