50,000 Students Applied. 3,000 Got Selected. Here's What Their Resumes Had in Common.#
Every year, TCS, Infosys, and Wipro collectively hire over 100,000 freshers from Indian colleges. TCS alone hires 40,000+. The competition is brutal.
At a typical campus placement drive, 500-2,000 students sit for the aptitude test. Maybe 200 clear it. Then comes the technical and HR round, where your resume is the first thing the interviewer reads.
If your resume doesn't match what these companies expect, you're already starting at a disadvantage. And here's the thing: TCS, Infosys, and Wipro all use ATS systems to filter resumes before anyone even looks at them.
TCS uses Taleo. Infosys uses SuccessFactors. Wipro uses Workday. Each of these systems expects a specific resume structure.
This guide gives you the exact resume template that works for all three companies, plus HCL, Tech Mahindra, Cognizant, and most other IT services companies in India.
What IT Services Companies Look For in a Fresher Resume#
Before we get to the template, you need to understand what these companies actually care about. We talked to recruiters at 3 major IT companies. Here's what they said:
They care about:
-
Your degree and CGPA. Most IT services companies have a minimum CGPA cutoff (usually 60% or 6.0 CGPA). This is the first thing they check.
-
Technical skills that match their tech stack. TCS works primarily with Java, Python, and cloud. Infosys is big on Java, SAP, and Oracle. Wipro uses Java, .NET, and Python. List the skills that match.
-
Projects with clear descriptions. They want to see that you've actually built something. Not just "I studied Machine Learning." But "I built a spam detection system using Naive Bayes achieving 94% accuracy."
-
Communication skills (shown through resume quality). A well-structured, error-free resume signals strong communication. A messy resume suggests the opposite.
-
No backlogs/arrears. Most IT companies require zero active backlogs at the time of joining.
They don't care about:
- Creative design. These companies review thousands of resumes. Fancy design is irrelevant.
- Hobbies. Nobody at TCS cares that you play cricket.
- Career objective paragraphs. Skip it.
- Your photograph. Not needed.
- Your Class X marks (usually). Unless it's exceptionally strong.
The Resume Template: Section by Section#
Here's the exact template. We'll go through each section with examples.
Section 1: Contact Information

- Mention 3-4 key technical skills
- Reference your strongest project or certification
- End with what role you're targeting
For Infosys specifically: Mention your InfyTQ certification score if you have one. It shows you've already engaged with their hiring process.
For TCS specifically: If you've completed TCS iON courses or have a TCS NQT score, mention it here.
Section 3: Education
EDUCATION
B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering 2022-2026
VIT Vellore, Tamil Nadu
CGPA: 8.2/10
Class XII (CBSE) 2022
Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi
Percentage: 92.4%

- Include Class XII if your score was good (above 80%)
- Skip Class X unless you scored above 90% and have space
- Don't list individual subjects or semester-wise SGPAs
- Don't include enrollment or registration numbers
Important for IT services companies: Many have CGPA cutoffs:
- TCS: 60% or equivalent (varies by year)
- Infosys: 60% aggregate
- Wipro: 60% aggregate
- Cognizant: 60% aggregate
- HCL: 60% aggregate
If your CGPA is above the cutoff, display it prominently. If it's right at the cutoff, still include it but don't draw extra attention.
Section 4: Technical Skills
TECHNICAL SKILLS
Languages: Java, Python, JavaScript, SQL, C++
Frameworks: Spring Boot, React.js, Node.js, Express.js
Databases: MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL
Cloud/Tools: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda), Git, Docker, Jenkins
Concepts: Data Structures, OOPS, DBMS, Operating Systems, Agile
Rules:
- Organize by category (Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Tools, Concepts)
- List only technologies you can discuss in an interview
- Put the company's primary tech stack first (Java first for TCS/Infosys/Wipro)
- Include CS fundamentals (DSA, OOPS, DBMS, OS) as a separate category. These come up in every technical interview.
- Don't include "MS Office" or "Windows/Linux" (assumed knowledge)
Company-specific skill emphasis:
| Company | Primary Skills They Look For |
|---|---|
| TCS | Java, Python, SQL, Cloud (AWS/Azure), Agile |
| Infosys | Java, Python, SAP, SQL, Spring, Angular |
| Wipro | Java, .NET, Python, SQL, Cloud |

Tailor your skills section to highlight the technologies relevant to the company you're applying to. Don't lie about skills you don't have. Just reorder the list to put their preferred skills first.
Section 5: Projects
This is the most important section for freshers. Your projects prove you can actually build things.

- Include numbers wherever possible (94% accuracy, 500 concurrent users, 1,000+ transactions)
- Mention specific technologies used in each bullet
- Show the end result or impact, not just what you did
For IT services companies specifically:
- Include at least one Java-based project (Java is their bread and butter)
- Include a project that shows database skills (SQL queries, CRUD operations)
- If you have an ML/AI project, include it. These companies are expanding their AI practices.
- Keep project descriptions technical but understandable. The HR interviewer reads this too.
Section 6: Internship Experience (If You Have One)

High-value certifications for IT services companies:
- NPTEL (any subject, especially if Elite or Gold)
- AWS Cloud Practitioner or Solutions Architect
- Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)
- Google Cloud Digital Leader

- Coding contest rankings are highly valued at IT companies
- Hackathon wins are excellent, especially SIH, HackWithInfy, or TCS CodeVita
- "Participated in college fest" is not an achievement. Don't include it.
- Keep to 2-4 strong achievements
Company-specific competitions that add extra value:
| Company | Their Competitions |
|---|---|
| TCS | TCS CodeVita, TCS HackQuest |
| Infosys | HackWithInfy, InfyTQ |

For TCS
- Mention TCS NQT score if you have one
- Highlight Java and Python skills (their primary tech stack)
- If you've done TCS iON courses, include them in certifications
- TCS values "contextual masters" so mention if you've specialized in any area (cloud, AI, etc.)
For Infosys
- Mention InfyTQ certification score
- Highlight Java, Spring, and Angular skills
- Infosys looks for "learnability." Include examples of quickly picking up new technologies.
- If you participated in HackWithInfy, mention your rank and round
For Wipro
- Highlight Java, .NET, and Python
- Wipro's NLTH (National Level Talent Hunt) values aptitude. If you scored well, mention it.
- Include cloud certifications (AWS/Azure) as Wipro invests heavily in cloud
For Cognizant
- Cognizant values digital skills: AI/ML, Cloud, IoT, Blockchain
- If you've built projects using any "digital" technology, highlight them
- GenC and GenC Next roles have different expectations. Tailor accordingly.
For HCL
- HCL has a strong SAP and enterprise apps practice
- If you know SAP basics or have taken SAP courses, include them
- HCL Tech Bee program alumni should mention it prominently
Common Mistakes in IT Services Resumes#
1. Listing Too Many Skills
Don't list 30 technologies. The interviewer will ask about the weakest one on your list. Stick to skills you can confidently discuss for 5 minutes.
2. Vague Project Descriptions
"Built a web application using Java" says nothing. "Built a REST API serving 10,000 daily requests with JWT authentication and 95% uptime" says everything.
3. Not Including CS Fundamentals
IT services companies test DSA, OOPS, DBMS, and OS in every technical interview. If these aren't on your resume, it looks like you've skipped them.
4. Submitting the Same Resume Everywhere
If you're applying to TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, create 3 slightly different versions. Move their preferred skills to the top of your list. Mention company-specific programs you've engaged with.
5. Missing LinkedIn and GitHub Links
Every IT services recruiter will check your LinkedIn and GitHub. Missing links suggest you don't have a professional online presence.
For more common resume mistakes, read our resume formatting mistakes guide and resume mistakes freshers make.
What Happens After You Submit#
Understanding the process helps you optimize:
- You submit through iBegin (TCS), career portal (Infosys), or career portal (Wipro)
- ATS parses your resume and extracts skills, education, and experience
- ATS scores your resume against the job description keywords
- Recruiter reviews scored resumes, starting from the highest score
- Shortlisted candidates get called for the aptitude test
- At the interview, the interviewer has your parsed resume on their screen
At step 2, your resume formatting determines whether ATS correctly reads your content. At step 4, your resume's scannability determines whether the recruiter spends 7 seconds or 30 seconds on it. At step 6, your project descriptions determine the interview questions you get asked.
Every element matters.
