Sales Salary and Job Market in India 2026
You are reading a sales offer letter in India and it says almost nothing about pay. The market is no help either: job ads in this field rarely quote a number. So you need two things: a clear picture of where the demand is, and a plan for getting a real figure out of the recruiter.
What the listings show right now#
A snapshot of the JobRise live jobs feed on 14 October 2026 shows 234 open sales listings in India on the India sales jobs hub. These are counts of open listings, not a market survey, so treat them as a dated picture rather than a trend line. 73 of those 234 were posted in the last 30 days, and 36 went up in the last 7 days alone.
That last number matters more than the headline. Roughly a third of the slice is fresh in the past month, which tells you the market is moving and that a two week old search saved on your phone is already stale. Refresh your alerts weekly.

Who is hiring, and where#
The concentration is lopsided. Rentokil Initial has 145 open listings in this slice, more than half the total. After that come Red Bull (10), Bosch Group (10), Datadog (9), Mongodb (9), Stranger Soccer (7), Apna (7), Okta (5), Elastic (3), and Lokal App (2).
Some of these names are recruiters or staffing firms rather than the final employer, so read the fine print before you assume which company signs your offer. Ask early: "Is this a direct hire or a contract role, and who is the employer of record?"
By city, Bengaluru leads with 47 listings, then Mumbai (14), Gurugram (12), Kolkata (12), and Pune (10). Every listing in the slice is full-time: 234 of 234. If you want part-time or contract sales work, this feed will not surface it.
The pay silence problem#
Here is the blunt part: no listing in this slice shows a salary. Zero out of 234. That is normal for Indian sales hiring, especially above entry level, and it shifts all the information work onto you.
So you cannot read the market rate off the ads. You have to build a range from other sources: talking to peers in similar roles, checking what past candidates reported, and asking recruiters early. When a recruiter screens you, say this: "Before we go further, can you share the budgeted CTC range for this role? I want to make sure we are in the same zone before either of us spends time." Good recruiters answer. The ones who dodge are telling you something.
Typical ranges by seniority, with caveats#
What follows is a rough sense of how sales pay is usually structured in India by level, not a promise and not a quote from any company. Ranges vary a lot by industry, city, and whether the role carries a target. Verify against current official sources and your own network before you anchor on any figure.
Field and territory sales roles at the executive or officer level are commonly discussed in the region of ₹3 to ₹7 lakh CTC per year, with a variable component tied to territory targets. Territory Sales Manager and Area Sales Manager type roles land higher, often ₹8 to ₹18 lakh, again with a meaningful bonus on top if targets are hit. Enterprise account executives and customer success managers at SaaS firms can reach ₹15 to ₹30 lakh or more, because base plus commission structures are common there. Director level inside sales or business development roles, like the "Director - Inside Sales & Business Development" opening at ProArch in this snapshot, sit in a different bracket again and are usually negotiated case by case.
Take these as orientation only. Your number depends on the company, the quota, and how much of the pay is at risk.
How pay actually works in India#
CTC, or cost to company, is the number recruiters quote. It is not your take-home. Inside CTC you will usually find basic salary, house rent allowance, special allowance, employer provident fund contribution, and sometimes gratuity and a medical insurance line. Ask for the CTC broken into components before you accept.
Variable pay is where sales offers get interesting. Ask four questions: what percent of CTC is variable, what is the quota, what is the payout curve below and above target, and what has been the actual attainment for this territory in the last year. That last question separates a real bonus from a decorative one.
A 13th month salary is not standard in India, though some multinationals offer it. Superannuation is rare outside a few older firms. Equity shows up mostly at tech companies, and its value depends entirely on the company's stage and the strike price. If equity is in the offer, ask for the vesting schedule, the current 409A or last valuation, and what happens to unvested shares if you are let go.
A worked example of the ask#
Say a recruiter offers ₹14 lakh CTC for a Territory Sales Manager role, with ₹2 lakh of that as variable. Before you say yes, restate it like this: "So that is ₹12 lakh fixed, ₹2 lakh variable at 100 percent attainment, and the quota for this territory is ₹1.5 crore. Can you tell me what the last person in this role actually earned on variable?" You have just turned a vague number into a testable one.
If the answer to the attainment question is vague, assume the variable is closer to zero than to the full amount, and negotiate the fixed piece up.
The negotiation plan#
Use the salary negotiation tool to structure the conversation before you pick up the phone. Then run this sequence.
- Get the CTC broken into fixed, variable, and benefits before you discuss a number.
- Build your range from at least three data points you trust, and write down your walk-away figure.
- Let the recruiter name a number first whenever you can. Silence after they speak is fine.
- Quote your range as a span, not a single figure, and say it is based on the role's scope.
- Ask what happens to variable pay if the territory is new or underperforming.
- Get the final offer in writing with the quota, the payout structure, and the review cycle spelled out.
One more thing worth doing: read the broader hiring picture for the country in the JobRise Hiring Report for India, which shows 1,867 open listings across all categories and 1,345 posted in the last 30 days. Sales is one slice of a much bigger pie, and knowing which other functions are hiring helps you judge how fast you can move if this offer falls through.
What to look at in the roles themselves#
The example titles in this snapshot show the spread: "Area On Premise Manager" and "On Premise Festival & Events Manager" at Red Bull are brand and channel work, "Account Executive" at WATI.io is quota carrying, "Portfolio & Sales Interface - Deputy Manager" at Bosch Group is a hybrid technical sales seat, and "Enterprise Customer Success Manager" at Datadog is retention rather than new logo hunting. The pay logic differs across all four.
Entry level openings are scarce: 5 of 234 listings carry intern, graduate, junior, or trainee style titles. Most of those are field sales executive roles at Rentokil Initial, such as "Field Sales Executive | Thrissur | Any Graduate" and "Jr. Product Sales Executive - North Kolkata". If you are early career, expect to compete hard and to accept a lower fixed base in exchange for a territory you can grow.

FAQ#
Why do so few Indian sales listings show salary?
Employers keep pay quiet to preserve negotiating room and to avoid internal pay mismatch complaints. That is their choice, not a rule you have to accept: you can still ask for the range before the first interview.
What is a realistic variable pay percentage in a sales CTC?
Field sales roles often carry 10 to 25 percent of CTC as variable, while SaaS account executive roles can go higher with commission plans. Always ask what percent of the team actually hits target.
Should I quote my current CTC or my expectation?
Quote your expectation, not your current number. Say: "Based on the scope of this role, I am looking at ₹X to ₹Y fixed CTC, and I am open to discussing the split with variable."
Is Bengaluru always the highest paying city for sales?
Bengaluru has the most openings in this snapshot at 47, and SaaS roles there do pay well, but Mumbai and Gurugram can beat it in FMCG and enterprise tech. Compare the specific role, not just the city.
When should I walk away from a sales offer?
Walk away if the quota looks unreachable, if the variable pay rules are unwritten, or if the fixed component will not cover your basic costs at 100 percent attainment. A bad territory with a good title is still a bad job.
