Software Salary and Job Market in the UK 2026
You are weighing a software offer in the UK and you have no idea whether the number on the table is fair. That is normal. Most listings never show pay at all, and the ones that do can be wildly inconsistent.
Here is what the market looks like right now, what the money tends to be, and how to push for more without wrecking the relationship.
What the UK software market looks like in October 2026#
On 14 October 2026 the JobRise live jobs feed showed 475 open software listings in the United Kingdom. 355 of those were posted in the last 30 days, and 212 in the last 7 days. That is a fast-moving feed, not a market survey, so treat it as a snapshot of live demand rather than a measure of total employment.
You can browse all of them in the UK software jobs hub. Against 2,742 open listings across all categories in the UK, software is a big slice but not the whole market. The JobRise Hiring Report for United Kingdom puts total open listings at 2,742, with 2,245 posted in the last 30 days.
Almost everything is permanent. 466 listings are full-time and 9 are contract. If you are hunting contract day rates, the pool is thin and you will be competing for a small number of slots.

Who is actually hiring#
The companies with the most open software listings on 14 October 2026 were Palantir (23), Anthropic (19), Neo4j (17), Elastic (15), Zopa (14), Spectrum IT Recruitment Limited (11), Spotify (11), Lanes Group (10), Stripe (10), and Ocean Infinity (9). Some of these names are recruiters or staffing firms rather than the end employer, so read the listing carefully before you assume who signs your payslip.
Geography is heavily skewed. London accounts for 208 listings, Manchester 14, Cambridge 13, Belfast 11, and Leeds 7. If you are outside London you are looking at a much smaller pool, and remote-friendly roles will pull applications from everywhere.
The roles themselves span a wide range. The feed includes an Automation Platform Engineer at Jagex: The RuneScape Company, an Electronics Engineer - Analogue/Mixed-Signal at Nu Quantum Ltd, a Quantitative Developer at Janus Henderson, an Associate Quantum Software Engineer at Oxford Quantum Circuits, and a Lead Software Development Engineer - Services at Capital One UK. You will also see Oracle Fusion Software Developer (Payroll) at Morson Edge, a Weights Engineer at Safran Engineering Services UK Limited, and a Quantum Software Engineer - Algorithms & Applications at Infleqtion.
Quantum and defence-adjacent work is showing up more than it used to. So is platform and infrastructure engineering alongside pure application development.
What listings actually pay#
Only 81 of 475 listings show any salary at all. That is the single most useful fact here. When four out of five employers hide the number, you cannot benchmark from job ads alone.
The salaries that were posted, quoted exactly as shown on 14 October 2026:
- "Lead Software Development Engineer - Services" at Capital One UK: £60K-60K
- "Oracle Fusion Software Developer (Payroll)" at Morson Edge: £1K-1K
- "Contract Software Developer" at Spectrum IT Recruitment Limited: £67K-67K
- "Full Stack Software Developer" at Data Careers: £90K-90K
- "Software Developer" at Sanderson: £60K-65K
- "Senior Software Developer" at Noriker Power Ltd: £70K-70K
Notice how odd this sample is. Some are flat numbers with no range, one is clearly a day rate or a weekly figure rather than an annual salary, and one contract role sits at £67K while a full-stack permanent role is at £90K. Do not treat six listings as a pay scale.
For general orientation, typical reported UK software ranges vary a lot by seniority, city, and stack. Roughly: junior or graduate roles often fall in the £28K to £42K band, mid-level developers around £45K to £65K, senior engineers around £65K to £90K, and staff or principal roles above that, with London and finance or AI employers pushing higher. These are indicative only. Salaries shift constantly, so verify against current official sources and live listings before you anchor on a number.
How UK pay packages are usually built#
Base salary is the norm, quoted as an annual gross figure. A 13th-month bonus is not standard here. What you should ask about instead:
- Annual bonus, usually a percentage of base, sometimes discretionary and sometimes formula-driven
- Employer pension contribution, often 3% to 10% of base, and worth real money over time
- Private medical cover, life insurance, and income protection
- Equity or share options, common at startups and US-headquartered firms like Stripe and Anthropic, less common at traditional UK employers
- Hybrid working expectations, and whether the salary changes if you move outside London
- Holiday allowance above the statutory minimum, and whether bank holidays are included
There is no CTC concept and no superannuation. If a recruiter uses those words they are probably copying a template from another market. Ask for the gross annual base, the bonus target, and the pension match, in writing.
Negotiating the offer#
Start by knowing your number before the call. Pick a floor you would accept and a target you would be pleased with, and write both down.
Then ask what the range is. Recruiters in the UK will usually tell you. If the posted range is £60K-65K and you want £72K, you need a reason beyond wanting more.
Worked example. Say you have three years of experience, you currently earn £55K, and Sanderson offers you £60K for a Software Developer role with the range shown as £60K-65K. Here is a script that works:
"Thanks, I am genuinely excited about the role. Based on my experience with the stack you described and the market rate I am seeing for similar positions, I was targeting £65K. Is there room to move to the top of the range? If the base is fixed, could we look at a signing payment or an earlier salary review at six months?"
Three things make this land. You name a specific number, you justify it in one sentence, and you offer a fallback so the recruiter has somewhere to go. If you want more scripts and a structured walkthrough, the salary negotiation tool is built for exactly this.
Never accept on the spot. Say you need 48 hours, then read the contract properly. Check the notice period, the probation terms, the bonus wording, and whether the pension contribution is on base only or on total pay.
Where to focus your search#
If you are early career, the odds are rougher. Only 10 of 475 listings look entry-level, counting intern, graduate, junior, and trainee titles. Examples include "Junior IT Desktop Support" at Barfoots of Botley, "Software Engineer - New Grad" at Scaleai, "Software Engineer, New Grad" at Stripe, "Junior Cyber Security Analyst" at Vix Technology & Kuba, and two Palantir roles: "Forward Deployed Infrastructure Engineer, New Grad - UK Government" and "Forward Deployed Software Engineer, New Grad - Commercial".
Graduate schemes at large employers open on fixed cycles, usually autumn for the following year. Small firms hire year-round but rarely advertise graduate roles under obvious titles. Apply anyway if you meet most of the requirements.

FAQ#
How many software jobs are open in the UK right now?
On 14 October 2026 the JobRise live jobs feed showed 475 open software listings in the United Kingdom, with 355 posted in the last 30 days. That is a snapshot of live listings, not a full market count.
What is a good software developer salary in the UK?
It depends heavily on seniority and city. Junior roles often sit around £28K to £42K, mid-level £45K to £65K, and senior £65K to £90K, with London and finance or AI employers paying more. Verify against current listings and official sources before you commit to a number.
Should I trust the salary ranges on job listings?
Only 81 of 475 software listings showed any pay on 14 October 2026, and the posted figures ranged from £60K-60K to £90K-90K. Treat those as individual data points, not as a scale, and always ask the recruiter for the actual band.
Do UK software jobs include a 13th month or equity?
A 13th-month payment is not standard in the UK. Expect base salary, an annual bonus target, and an employer pension contribution; equity or share options show up mainly at startups and US-headquartered firms.
Is it worth negotiating a UK software offer?
Yes, and it is expected. Name a specific number, justify it briefly, and offer a fallback such as a signing payment or an early review. Never accept on the spot.
