A matching balance can still be wrong

Module 1: AI in the numbers

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. AI coded a month of bank feed lines (transactions the bank sends into your software), and the bank reconciliation matches to the cent. Can the books still be wrong?

A bank reconciliation (matching your books to the bank statement) proves every transaction is in the books once, with the right amount. It doesn't check each line's category, and that's where AI coding goes wrong.

A bakery's March feed with AI categories. The owner's own checking account ends in 1022.

Tap the three lines that need a second look. Tap a fine one and you get a hint.

All three still reconcile: the money really moved.

Ask AI to find the traps

A prompt is the message you send to the AI. This one names the traps and leaves the decisions to you:

Here are March's bank feed lines with their categories. The owner's own
accounts end in 1022 and 4410. The business loan is with Northside Bank.
List every line that could be a transfer between those accounts, a loan
payment booked as one expense, or personal spending.
Don't change any category. I'll decide each one.
